The Mel Carr staff shows up promptly. They wear foot covers so they can avoid tracking dirt into your home. They try to provide good service but their prices are much higher than other area electricians. Sometimes two or three times higher. Best to compare costs before hiring them. They also encourage customers to join service programs which bill monthly fees regardless off whether they make service calls. read more

It has needed a lot of upgrading and the quotes have been reasonably priced, flexible (as in more than one option offered) and each option well explained. The work itself was done professionally and conscientiously, and the electricians are respectful of the space and leave it clean. So far they have done 5 jobs on this place and another is upcoming. Called Mel Carr for service on a standby generator that powers my fridge and kitchen when the power goes out, as NatGrid destroys 3-4 fridges of food a year. Was asked if it was a "whole house" generator: explained to associate that it is attached to my house but only powers the kitchen. First was for afternoon. Had to take day off work to wait for technician across a five-hour appt window. Mel Carr called after window was passed to say the technician would not come but I would be "guaranteed" a prompt appt the next week. Accepted 2nd appt, took second day off work. Appt window passed, I called and was told the technician was "just leaving" the previous job. One hour and 20 minutes later the technician called to say he was "just leaving" the previous job for my place. Technician arrived, was polite and knowledgable, took a look at the generator, said "We don't service whole house generators" and left, giving me the card for "Advanced Power" at 518-895-2884. Total of snafu included three lies about timing and two days of work. Dissatisfied. read more

Several of our exterior outlets were not working properly when we needed them to. My wife and I both tried them and nothing. One, in fact, had been installed by Mel Carr in late 2018. So, I called them up and have them repair all three outlets in one trip. Two guys came and they were on time and very friendly. They first tested the outlets: two worked just fine, but the one they had installed two years earlier didn't. They then warned us that if we wanted them to begin work the pricing would start at $457 for an "initial diagnostic." They then said that if the outlets tested fine after their diagnostic tests they wouldn't charge me the full amount, so I agreed to go forward with it. I appreciated the up-front warning, and am including it in my Yelp review to let others know that Mel Carr isn't cheap. But they are good. Turns out two outlets work great (no idea why they didn't when my wife and I tried... but while they watched I tried them and everything did what it should). They replaced and sealed the defective one, and charged me about half of what they quoted above. Part of me says "That is a lot of money to switch out one outlet that I could do myself." The other part of me says "I expected them to charge me what I paid to get all three outlets working and now they are so I shouldn't be complaining." I am happy with the results and wouldn't hesitate to call them again with an electrical emergency. However, for routine matters I will likely attempt to fix it myself first. read more

I had an outlet outage in part of my house. I requested a quote from multiple Companies on Yelp and Mel Carr was the first to reply that same day. This took place Sunday before Labor Day. The appointment was within 48 hours of request. Gary was my technician. He was extremely nice, arrived within the promised time window, and he was able to fix everything in 15 minutes. The cost of the repair was better than I expected. He's also going to provide a quote to redo the whole electrical setup. This is my electric repair provider going forward. Nice, but RIP OFF. I requested an installation of 2 ceiling fans and a replacement of 2 ceiling lights. The quote was roughly $1,700, BUT if I bought the maintenance plan at $150/year it would cost $1600. Wow. I have had ceiling lights and fans installed for hundreds of dollars. Not sure how they think that's a reasonable price. I got an estimate just now for $150/fan and $50/light rom a different electrician on yelp. Not sure if Mel Carr electricians thought I was naive or dumb, but have never heard of such a pricey installation for such a simple job. read more

The owner has the wrong customer. We have no brick wall. It was 1 simple receptical run to the panel in a clear basement. $1,000 is extremly overcharging. I called Mel Carr Electric on the morning of Monday 7/22 and seemed quite hopeful in their potential service as the ladies I chatted with both online and the subsequent phone call to set up service/quote were friendly and personable. The soonest availability they had was today, Thursday 7/25 and they stated they would be here between the hours of 9am-noon. They mentioned that I was the second call on the list for the day and that they would call when they were 15 minutes away. I made myself available beginning at 9am and waited patiently for their call. At 11am, I still hadn't heard anything, and figuring that even if they had called at that moment, it would be an additional 15 minutes before they would be arriving. I called the office and asked about the possible timing. The girl I spoke with was understanding, and apologized that it was me having to reach out and not them for the longer-than-anticipated arrival. She mentioned that the technician was on a call that took longer than expected but should be on his way shortly. At 11:20am, I received a call that the technician, was getting ready to leave... Schaghticoke. Living in Albany, this would mean at least 40-45 minutes out. Having already waited for almost 3 hours, this would mean that he would be arriving just after the scheduled window. The technician was not very apologetic. I told him that it would not work at this time, and I'll have to speak with my husband about rescheduling. I received a phone call about 10 minutes after (11:30am) from the office where they tried to apologize for this morning. While I was rightfully annoyed and frustrated, I was not rude. However, I was given a passive aggressive remark of "We give a window of about 3 hours in case of situations like this where something my have taken longer than expected. I'm sorry that the technician would arrive right at the end of the window or a few minutes after." The right thing would have been for the company to call me and notify me that their first call was taking longer than expected as soon as the technician realized this. While this may be a fluke situation, unfortunately, I was not able to have the positive experience as everyone else had reviewed (which was the reason why I decided to try MCE in the first place.) read more

Good: polite, prompt, friendly/courteous, and did not charge for the visit (!) when unable to fix the problem. That's all five-star. And I would certainly consider using them again. So it should maybe be 4-star, this is not a negative review. "A-OK" is closer than "Yay! I'm a fan" though. Bad: semi-misdiagnosed the problem and wrong about needed fix (our ceiling fan/light stopped working; the diagnosis of a burnt-out controller was correct BUT the technician insisted that it was a non-replaceable part and we would need to order a complete new fan. I am not at all unhappy with the service I received on the estimate call or the technician that came to my home. We have kind of a unique situation where a contractor walked off our renovation job and left things unfinished. I explained to the technician that I had paid for an electrical inspector to come in and look at things, and he had found no issues except for a few cosmetic items and raised a question about outside electric that he could not see; just telling me that someone should just look to see if it had been done correctly. I had gotten a couple other estimates to finish the work and those and Mel Carr's were all in the same ballpark area give or take a couple hundred dollars. However, on top of the scope of work estimate, Mel Carr's added another $1900.00 for what they called Level 3 major diagnostic and repair of major electrical issues. They did not mention any major electrical issues while they were here. This is a completely open basement so nothing has to be taken apart to see the wiring, etc. I had just been told by the electrical inspector that everything looked fine. Plus the previous initial electrical inspection had passed and the signed sticker is right on the window. I am very disappointed as this business came highly recommended. In the process of finishing the work, of course I would approve and pay for anything additional that was found or needed to be done, but to charge a customer a non refundable extra $1900.00 is a little over the top; especially since they did not point out any major electrical issues and a NYS certified electrical inspector had just told me he did not see any issues. Other companies doing the estimates are checking past work, but are doing so as part of their estimate and not charging an additional $1900.00. If this were truly the case for the charge, then you would have to be charging all customers this diagnostic assessment unless you have done all electrical work from the start. read more

They replaced the faulty outlet for our pool filter and also attempted to get the motor running but couldnt due to things beyond their control. Jason and Shawn were great. They came exactly when they said they would. It only took one day to get them out to our house. They were friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Like I said, they were great. We had had another person in a couple of weeks before who was trying to diagnose the problem for 6 hours. That person then said he would be back then never even returned a call or text. Jason and Shawn came in and fixed it in 10 minutes. They know their stuff! You get what you pay for. I've been using Mel Carr Electric as my go to electricians for years. I've found they have reasonable prices and always do excellent work.

To their credit, my phone call was returned almost immediately. They set up an appointment right away, and came promptly, to give a handwritten estimate for my project. The project was to wire a large shed w/outlets, inside lights, and outside security lighting. My only problem with the company is that the estimate given seemed quite high for the work I wanted done. Their estimate was $3500, and they said tax would be added to that #. Since this was new construction, I believed no tax should be added because it is a "capital improvement". I contacted other companies, and settled on one with an estimate of $1800 , and NO tax. read more

They drilled holes thru our support beams in our basement to run electrical cords because he was too lazy to do it the correct way. Holes should never be drilled thru support beams of a house. He explained exactly what it would cost, and got right to work. While he was here he fixed another problem we were having also. Dan knows his stuff! While he worked I got in some other electrical questions, which he helped me understand. He was able to quote some prices for future work we want to do. He was friendly and by the time he left it was like we were old friends. This was our first experience with this company and for sure will be our first call if we ever have another problem. Called at Noon and asked if I could get someone today.... was told they could get to me by 2:30... got a call back at 1PM and they said they were on their way. Dan A. was excellent, prompt, and to the point. He was able to diagnose accurately and remedy a very problematic circuit issue we had in an old house we recently bought in Albany that was beyond my sophomore-level electrical knowledge and tools. Even better was that he allowed me to explain the things I had already done, such as replacing breaker and GFCI outlet, and allowed me to explain my theory about how the house was wired, which allowed for him to focus on the most likely part of the circuit where the problem did in fact occur. It means a lot that a technician will take the time to listen to what a customer has to say, as this sometimes is helpful information! Often other technicians I have experienced in different respective trades will just "yup" you to death and proceed to waste time going through troubleshooting 101 A to Z. Dan was also very prompt, and arrived on time and completed the job within a practical span of time. Overall I feel that the job was reasonably priced and the expertise was 10/10 read more
