My brother and I rode the Megabus (in June 2018) from Dallas, TX all the way to Richmond, VA, with a bus changes in Memphis, TN and Atlanta, GA. I'm going to share the same review with those Megabus Yelp business pages. Our trip took around 36 hours. First, the bad: WiFi did not work on ANY of the three buses we rode. It's time consuming. Our journey was 36 hours end to end. Cleanliness of bathroom deteriorates rapidly as the journey wears on. I considered it "For emergency use only." There is no running water. There might have been hand sanitizer. Now the good. Inexpensive. Nothing beat it. Not Greyhound. Not Amtrak. If you have more time than money, or just want an adventure, Megabus is OK. Buses were clean. Buses have a bathroom, but it's nothing more than a chemical toilet. It was an adventure. 110 volt A/C power outlets did work on all buses. Oh, and since it was summer, there were no airline deals either. The bus stops about every 2 hours for a break. It generally stopped at a truck stop, where you could use a restroom with running water, and get something to eat. Our bus change in Memphis was long. It gave us enough time to take an Uber to Beale St. It was also at night. Neighborhood was kinda sketchy, but there was indoor waiting area with vending machines and bathrooms. There's a gas station next door that serves hot food. Our bus change in Atlanta was shorter, but it was long enough to search out some breakfast within walking distance. It was morning for this stop. Neighborhood was OK. There was no indoor waiting area and I think there were restrooms if you went in the MARTA station (below). We arrived in Richmond at night and walked to our hotel. I did not seeing any waiting area, though it is close to the (Amtrak) train station, in the Main Street Station, so there might be something there. If you are prone to motion sickness, there is less sway on the bottom, but try to get toward the front, as the bathroom is in the back. Upper seats have a better view, and the roof is transparent. During the day it was quite enjoyable. There are reserved seats, and if they are available, will cost you a little extra. We only had reserved seats on one bus. Not having a reservation was not a problem. There are some sections, up and down, where the seats face each other (with a small table in the middle). So if you are a party of 3 or 4, it would be good to reserve these seats. You might want to hedge your bet, and reserve seats opposite of each other. This way you'll play footsies with someone you know, not a stranger. It seems obvious now, but the reserved seats are the ones with BIG numbers on them. Once the bus is loaded, it seems OK to move into those seats, but you don't know if they are going to be reserved for the next leg of your journey. The bus does drop off and pick up along the way, though not necessarily at all stops. Some stops are just breaks to stretch your legs, and last 10 to 20 minutes. You might want to bring an extension cord, or have a long charging cable. Sometimes the power is overhead. Brings snacks and drinks, but not alcohol, as it's not allowed. We asked a couple drivers what would happen if you were caught. The answer varied a bit, but it seems likely you will be kicked off the bus. Where you are asked to leave seems to depend on your attitude. If you need anything during the trip, bring it with you when you go to your seat. You can't access your checked bags en route. Consider bringing ear buds or plugs, and eye shades. My conclusion: It was just too many hours. Man this trip dragged on. I would consider it for shorter trips, in fact I'd like to see more of Memphis. And them maybe take a riverboat to New Orleans, and Megabus back to DFW. Bottom line: Good adventure. No problems. No regrets. What a joke. I've ridden Megabus throughout Texas, and I've never had issues like this. Without emailing me or letting me know, my 12:05 bus from Richmond to DC has been "delayed for up to 3 hours due to mechanical delays". Called customer service- a) they barely speak English b) were so rude and unhelpful, you could have someone on life support offering more help than these garbage people. They expect you to wait for 3 hours after a a scheduled bus that they can't provide, and refuse to give a refund. Absolute garbage. At least the Greyhound runs on time. What a disgrace. read more

Megabus - Transportation Near Me

Do NOT plan to be on time with this so called service. I paid for round trip fare from Richmond to DC. The bus arrived over 90 minutes late. Another way was found for my child, a VCU student to return. In the future,she will avoid this so called bus service and use the VCU Facebook page for transportation to and from VCU. This company needs to rethink it's service. They can do soooo much better. Avoid, if possible. read more

First time taking the Megabus, and my impressions were neutral. The bus did have the two decker areas and that's where I sat (at the top levels) there and back. Going to my destination it was relaxing and I enjoyed the blue lights during the night. However, going back was a little different. I met two guys and one was playing with himself and tried to get me to join in something illegal and another was okay. I'm not sure I would ride it again but it is cheap for what it is. The bus did come late the first time around 30 mins after the departure but other than that everything was fine. read more

Worst bus ride ever Bus was scheduled to leave DC for Richmond/Durham/Charlotte at 11:20. The bus was delayed so we didn't leave until almost 1:00am. Barely out of DC and the bus driver announces that the bus is "broke" and we're going back to Union Station!!! Once back at Union Station, we're there 'til about 2:30. A mechanic declared the bus fine and sent us on our not-so- merry way on the same bus. Arrived in Richmond at about 4:30. Still here because the "broke bus is still "broke". It's leaning low on the left. Didn't they see that at Union Station??? So now we're still in Richmond waiting for a replacement bus to come from DC...another 2 hours added to a waaay too long trip. We're supposed to be in Durham at 8:20. Ha!! Hope we make it in time for the wedding Megabus really deserves a solid "no star" rating. read more

I had such high hopes for this way of traveling, but alas, my first time will be my last time. I took a weekend trip to Philly from Richmond, having stops in DC, Baltimore, and the University of Delaware. The way up was not nearly as bad as the way back, although both ways were pretty bad. First off- these buses are FREEZING, wifi is terrible, and some of the electrical outlets don't work. When we made it to DC, we were told that our bus was experiencing technical difficulties and that we would have to switch buses...what?! How long before we stopped did you know something was wrong?! That wasn't even a big deal. Secondly, I guess the University of Delaware stop is new because our driver completely missed the stop and it took us 45 freaking minutes to back track. We finally rolled into Philly about 1.5 hours late. THIS IS THE WORST PART AND THE REASON I WILL NEVER USE MEGA BUS AGAIN------ On the way home, I experienced the single most disgusting thing that I have ever witnessed...when picking up in DC, a man sat in the seat diagonally in front of me...I noticed he couldn't keep his disgusting hands out of his pants. So, I attempt to fall asleep so I won't throw up. I fall asleep for 30 minutes, wake up, and what do I see but this nasty, disgusting human being PLEASURING HIMSELF in his seat, private parts out in the open, looking straight at me. I was so unbelievably horrified and still had 2 more hours of this to deal with. I immediately left my seat and went to a different level on the bus. There's nothing like arriving in Richmond at 3:30 in the morning in 27 degree weather, only to find your bag hasn't been unloaded. When I pointed that out to one of the handlers, I got a lecture on the importance of specifying my destination when loading - which I had done. Then I was told I had to find and drag my bag out of the cargo hold. Outlets sometimes work - sometimes don't. WiFi is extremely slow, either because of all the people using it or throttling by Megabus - it took an hour for me to download a Sunday New York Times to my tablet. On one bus, the driver made a point to say the temperature is "climate-controlled" and there was no point in complaining to her about how cold it was. read more

The driver on the scheduled 645 pm trip from Washington to Richmond on May 21, 2015 had a major attitude, throwing people's luggage off the bus and onto the street while yelling about how unloading luggage was not his job!!! I was appalled! He deserves to be FIRED!!! This is how my experience ended after having to deal with ALL 4 BUSES I TOOK BEING AT MINIMUM AN HOUR LATE!!!! So, here is an update to my previous review. I would never ride with megabus, but after negotiating with them last time they gave me a 20 $ card for future reservations. I wish I would not use it. Booked two tickets from philadelphia to DC. They seem to overbook the tickets. One bus left with a lot of people still remaining to be picked up. It took 2 hours to get in the next bus. I will take the train next time or buy two seats. It's sad because I really thought this would be the way to travel on a budget instead of me having to drive. Thought I could get some work done....ummmm nope, I thought wrong. You're basically on top of each other. Nobody sits where they are supposed to, which is annoying!!! Person sitting next to me was eating everything under the sun and then the lady across from me was cleaning out her teeth every five seconds, screaming babies. If I could give negative stars, I would. I attempted to take a bus from Richmond to DC to take an early morning flight. I received a text message saying the bus would be 60 to 90 minutes late. Luckily, my husband stayed with me to wait. The bus was supposed to arrive at 10:55 pm, then 11:38 pm, then 12:02 am. Keep in mind, I was supposed to arrive in DC at 12:55 am. Around 12:00 am is when I stopped receiving updates. Both my husband and I called the customer service line more than three times each to try to reach an agent. We finally did around 12:30 am. She told us my ticket was non-refundable even though she could not tell me if or when my bus was actually going to come. She "advised" me to wait at the station for the bus. I asked if she was going to refund me for the plane that I was likely to miss as I waited for the bus that she didn't have the "technology" to track. My husband is now driving me to DC with the poor kids sleeping in the back. Thanks MegaBus. I'm never patronizing your terrible company again. I'm generally not one to write reviews but I don't want something like this happening to anyone else. My husband added "MegaBus sucks". Update: "Please be advised that your bus scheduled from Richmond, VA, The Plaza at Main Street Station(RIC) to Washington, DC, Union Station.(WAS) at 22:55 on 30 July 2016 is running behind schedule due to mechanical issues. I've ridden this bus many times before and it's always been late but never over 30 min late. This particular time the bus was scheduled to arrive at 1220pm and I waited till 230-3 pm before I left and decided to drive. Around 4 pm I called the mega bus customer service and was advised that the bus still hadn't arrived at the pickup location yet. That will be my last time dealing with this bus company. read more

Megabus is the fuck horrible please do not book with them. They sent me a email that my bus would be a half an hour late. I was waiting in the cold for an hour then i gave them a call the rude man rushed me off the phone. I waited for another half hour and called again. He said that my bus wont be half for another hour. I also had another megabus to catch in Washington to get home. So now i would be missing my bus in Washington. Great. Megabus is ghetto horrible customer service and no refunds. I had an extremely poor experience with Megabus. After reading other reviews and talking to friends, the bus seemed reliable, so I booked 2 tickets- one from Richmond with a connecting bus in DC. I left 45 minutes between the 2 buses just in case of normal delays. I unfortunately did not account for the possibility of the 6:25 AM bus being more than an hour late for pick-up in Richmond, so the lateness of the first bus was not only inconvenient in terms of waiting, but it also caused me to miss the 2nd bus from DC and to waste that $30 ticket. I will not be using Megabus again and would not recommend it. read more

My family and I rode the megabus from Richmond 1:40am to Atlanta this past saturday. The bus was on time. I paid for reserved seating and someone was sitting in our seats. I notified the bus driver who said tell them to move. I was a bit upset at this as I felt it was his job and I didnt want a confrontation. I advised them I paid for these seats and they moved no problem. The bus was still boarding and when husband stepped off to make room for the move. The driver asked him if there was a problem. The driver was checking to make sure there wasnt a problem claiming the seats. My husband and sons are over 6 ft tall so I purchased the 4 seats in the front up top. I did so expecting extra leg room but this was not a good choice. There was more room if we had sat in the back or they had an aisle seat. I will remember this next time. The bus was clean the stops were sufficient, the outlets and the wifi worked with no problems at all. I didnt use the restroom but my husband and son said they were clean. Most of these reviews are very old. So maybe they have changed because we had no problems that were under Megabus' control. I gave 4 stars because we did arrive 20 minutes late to Atlanta. This was due to the driver giving us a 15 minute stop that turned into a 35 minute stop. This still reflected good customer service as he made sure all paasengers were on board. read more

Pleasantly surprised! I usually drive but was meeting the bf so felt adventurous and bought a ticket before reading the reviews. This is a clean Venture Tours bus running a bit late the day before Thanksgiving to DC. Nice driver, quiet group. The only things I could ask for are an oil can for the squeak upstairs, a little more cold air as we are in the sun, and clear roads, so really not much more on this lovely day. read more

The Megabus from Richmond to D.C. was 30 minutes late. Then the driver dropped passengers off at the drop-off point and then sped past the people waiting to get on at the pick-up point, despite our attempts to flag the bus down. I called customer service to get a refund and didn't get any agreement initially. I then received a follow up call hours later in which the woman told me they had my information and were still "investigating." Awful! Took Megabus from Durham to Richmond and back again. The bus arrived 2 hours late both leaving and returning! They expect you to be at the pick up spot at the original time anyway. Which meant that in Richmond I was waiting in a completely unmonitored underpass under 95. In the dark. I was accosted twice by people asking for money. If I could actually rate a 0, I would. I was travelling from Atlanta, GA to Richmond, VA to visit my parents (today - like an hour ago) and when I arrived to Main Street Station, my bags were nowhere to be found. After 3 phone calls, and unfortunately holding up the bus for an additional 20 minutes, the driver left - stating that she was not liable for my lost bag. Agreed. However, why does Megabus allow anyone standing at the stop to just *claim* bags? No I.D., no verification, no problem. Any bag you want can be yours. Normally, I would not be as upset, however, the contents of the bag exceeded $3000, as I was bringing home gifts. She urged that it should have been tagged (it was) - so why not ask for the patron to identify the bag by name? But NO WORRIES, Megabus issues up to $250 reimbursement if they are liable for the loss so everything is splendid. I just don't want anyone to be finessed by Megabus into believing they will value the safety or the security of your belongings. Be safe, people. I hope someone reads this and is careful about their luggage, learning from my horrible mistake. I am a pretty frequent traveler and usually prefer Megabus over Greyhound, but I will not be taking a Megabus ride ever again. read more

Customer service was rude said it was the estimation for departure but they did not give the estimation of alotted duration . I asked for further info and his name. I purchased tickets for the megabus trip from Richmond, VA to Washington DC on August 18th. The bus was supposed to arrive at 6:30, it didn't arrive until almost 7:30. Once he arrived, he told everyone to get off of the bus because "he had to go gas up". When he finally arrived for departure, it was almost 8:30. My assigned seat was broken #13 and i had to sit up the entire ride or I would have been laying in the passenger's lap behind me. I was angry because I paid $5 extra for an assigned seat and there were no more seats for me to take. Once on board, there was one rider who got on the wrong bus so we had to stop and let them off further up the road. Finally we are off, so about 20 minutes into the ride, he pulls off the highway, and makes an announcement over the loud speaker, "DO NOT TALK TO THE BUS DRIVER, I DON'T CARE IF YOU ARE THE FBI, POLICE, OR WHOMEVER, DO NOT TALK TO THE BUS DRIVER, YOU KNOW BETTER, I HAVE 80 PEOPLE ON THIS BUS WHOM I AM IN CHARGE OF GETTING TO THEIR DESTINATION, SO AGAIN, DO NOT TALK TO THE BUS DRIVER, I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE." Yelp should seriously consider adding a no star rating. My experience was so bad it's almost comical. Let's start with the fact that the bus was 1.5 hours late. Got on the bus only to find that the extra money I paid for a table seat was a shared table with four other people. The table was super tiny and the seats are so close I was knee to knee with the guy across from me (im only 5'7"). Also the wireless didn't work. Now let's discuss the employees. I thought the rudeness i experienced was only the stuff of SNL skits. The driver continuously barked orders at paying passengers. During a rest stop i overheard him say "why are you JUST now getting off the bus...get back on!" (This was all of two minutes after we stopped.). I, as well as other passengers, overheard an employee call the passengers filthy people. I will never ever in my life take another megabus and the I'll use all of my social networking power to make my friends think twice about it. I would rather sell my body on the street to pay for a greyhound ticket than to ever give another penny to megabus. read more

Bus scheduled to arrive at 6:20. Was at stop since 5:11 and waited until 8:45. Made 5 calls to customer service and they could not find the bus, could not contact the driver and continued to tell me to call back in 20 minutes. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, the rep told me that they would have to disconnect the call because a supervisor cannot help me more than she could. Had to find a ride to Greyhound and not get a bus until 11:50 pm! read more

We use Magabus frequently, even though it's notoriously late at arrivals and departures. Our last trip was from Richmond to Durham, we arrived 30 mins early. There were two buses there, both of them displayed marquis that read "Richmond - Washington DC - Baltimore, Maryland" so we waited for our bus travelling south to Durham, due to depart at 7:10pm. Just after 7, one of the buses departed, we then asked the remaining driver when our south-bound bus was expected? He said it had just left, (The marquis still read "DC - Baltimore". ) He refused to contact the other driver, even though we could see the bus stopped nearby. We ran after it, but it left. While we still prefer Megabus to the hound, or trains, don't expect any kind of customer service. There was no announcement, the marquis was wrong, and the bus left a few minutes early, despite missing at least two passengers. read more
