I had a great Megabus experience. I took the 6am bus to NYC and returned the same day at the 6:10 bus. I've never done this drive before in a car or bus, so I have nothing to compare my experience to and I've actually never taken a bus (other than a school bus or school trip) in the US. I usually take the train or fly, but $13 each way was within my current budget. Anyway, I slept most of the way to NYC, the bus was quiet, the bathroom was clean, the drive did seem to take forever once we were in the city to get dropped off. We were about 40 minutes late, but I think I just expected that we wouldn't be on time.... because this is the USA not Japan.
On the return trip, the place where you get on the bus seems kinda out of the way, I'm not very familiar with NYC. I had read reviews that made me nervous that I might not easily find which bus I needed to get on for my return trip. But there are signs... so that was easy. It would have been nice if the waiting area was covered, because it was pouring rain. We were the second people on the bus, so we took seats on the top at the front, which were fantastic, awesome, wonderful seats with a nice view and if I ever ride a Megabus again, i'd try to get to the bus early to get those seats again. The bus seemed to take us forever to get on the highway and I fell asleep before we did. Our bus was an hour late returning the Boston and I noticed other buses (Peterpan) that were faster and drove past us. But I slept most of the way and was in 'vacation mode' where time wasn't a big deal. There was some road work going down to one lane that caused some traffic which contributed to the delay.
On both rides, the internet was sporadic and not fast...but I avoided using the internet because I wanted to conserve phone life I didn't try the outlets. If there is a seat in front of you and the passenger puts their seat back, there isn't enough space for you to safely open an averaged size laptop. For never having taken a bus in this country, I expected the experience to be a super crappy, especially for the low price (I'm from another part of the country, so going from Boston to NYC vs my home state to NYC is a HUGE price difference). I was really shocked at how nice Megabus was--the bus, the bathrooms, seat comfort, and the service from the Megabus staff, the sunroof, the natural light. Fortunately I was also with a good group of people on both buses, no one was obnoxiously loud. My seats were comfortable, I felt safe, I got where I wanted to go, the bus was on time for both departures.
Next time I would bring pajamas for sleeping on the bus, a travel pillow (like the thermarest compressible pillow), an eye mask (eagle creek!), I always pack a long and wide scarf that can double as a blanket, and you should definitely bring more snacks and water than you think you'll want. The food trucks near the NYC pick up stop are terrible and overpriced. If Megabus hired me to suggest improvements, I would say to add those headrest flaps that are on some planes that make it easier to sleep, to place the window seat chairs closer to the windows so you don't hurt your neck sleeping against them, to have a little more leg room, faster and more dependable internet, and a way to let riders see how many miles/minutes we are from the final destination. There is always room for improvement, but my experience was very pleasant.
I'm usually a big complainer. I wouldn't hesitate to take Megabus again! read more
