I'm usually not a picky person when it comes to these buses, but after three horrible experiences i have a few stories to tell.
TRIP 1- Early August 2010
This was my first trip on megabus. The bus came on time, maybe a half an hour late, but that was totally fine. I got on, with no trouble, plugged in my laptop, and was happy to find that the internet was reasonably fast. However, after five minutes or so, I realized we had stopped moving. Less than a mile from the terminal, we had stopped, on the side of the road, and the driver was unable to get the bus to move an inch farther. This, I would have been able to disregard and still think of megabus as a good company, if, we had recieved any information at all about what was going to happen. Instead, we all sat in the bus for a half an hour, while the driver went out for a smoke and talked on his cell phone. In this time, we watched the megabus that was due to leave a half an hour after us go by.
Then, the AC gave out, along with the power
Everyone evacuated the bus, where we stood around, complaining, still getting no reassurances from the bus driver.
Then, the toilet gave out
By this time, an hour had passed, and we had still heard no news from the driver. Soon, a mechanic came, and basically poked the bus a few times. Despite talking hurriedly to the driver and wearing a dirty apron, this man did completely nothing.
Then, we watched the megabus that was supposed to leave an hour after us pass us by.
The mechanic left.
Finally, a bus came, around 1 1/2 hours after we were going to leave. Hallelujah! we thought, but no. This bus had one open seat on it, and before anyone knew what was happening, one of our fellow passengers had bought himself onto that bus, and it was pulling away.
I'll spare you the rest of the epic, but in the end, we finally got a new bus 3 hours (THREE HOURS) after we were supposed to leave the terminal, and had been stuck on the side of the road all that time in the August Heat. We recieved NO information from the driver, and megabus customer service was conviently not operating when we tried to call. When we were finally picked up, it was not in a megabus, but in the basic equivalent of a school bus.
Still, one bad thing does not my faith in a bus company kill.
NEXT TRIP
Mid-September 2010 5:00 PM Bus
The bus was 2 hours late, and I watched as people with 5:30 and 6:00 tickets get on the bus that left at 5:00, while I was denied entry to it because i wasn't as far up on line. Thankfully, we were not stuck on the side of the road for this trip.
THIRD TRIP
Mid-September 2010
The bus was not only forty-five minutes late, but the wi-fi completely didn't work...
So, needless to say, I'll try my hardest to take Bolt instead of MegaBus from now on. Megabus is still higher on my list than the Chinatown buses because of their dismal safety record, and it's prices top greyhound's, but their customer service and perpetual lateness are unacceptable. I would not reccomend Megabus at all. read more
