The range on offer is fairly wide, from the quick espresso at the bar over the Italian brakfast (coffee and a pastry) to a (fairly substantial) snack that can be anything from a sandwich to a focaccia (tuscan cousin of Napoli's pizza) or a small pasta dish (it goes without saying that the means to wash them down - soft drinks, wine, beer, etc. - are in plentiful stock). Two things to look out for: a snug little upholstered bench in the corner (just the right size when there's two of you) and some highly original cups.

BLUF: mediocrity in a nice setting…read more We went for dinner a Thursday night. Ordered the Greek salad, a cocktail, and Quatro stagione pizza. The Greek salad was at least tolerable with decent chunks of feta cheese, black olives, and nice fresh tomato. The pizza could not have been more flavorless. It looked delicious but nothing about it had flavor even after laying on a bunch of salt and pepper and even olive oil to try to make it taste better. The cocktail was weak and the fruit juice in it tasted canned. No way I'd go back

We ordered glasses of wine which were fine, I mean it's wine, but the little focaccia bread sticks that they gave us at the table were bad. It was very very salty and very oily. Not to mention the bread they gave us in a bag was awful, store bought and tasteless and stale. For appetizer we ordered beef tartare, disgusting. All it was - just ground up raw hamburger meat served as a patty and shavings of carrot on top. Could not eat it and did not want to. That's not pictured; did not even want to look at it. Also extremely overpriced and expensive. Awful experience and place and a disgrace to Tuscan cuisine.

The setting was unlikely...the ground floor was a neighborhood bar. Definitely NOT fancy. The locals were hanging out, outdoors on the cobblestone street if they were smoking, inside if the temperatures were a bit too brisk. The dining room was upstairs. Pretty, spotless, but definitely not fancy. There were no tuxedoed waiters or rows of silverware. No fancy China. The service was by the owner, who miraculously flew from table to table. He was fast but never felt rushed. There were no menus. He charmingly explained 6 starters and 7 mains. The only problem was deciding....each and every option sounded incredible. Wine service was equally casual, but lovely. He deposited multiple bottles on our table and instructed us to "test". We did. All great, and we made a selection. After all that, he brought a different bottle. "You'll like this more." He was right! The food came quickly and it was amazing. Fresh, locally sourced, and absolutely delicious. No fancy presentations, no edible flowers, no frou-frou. We barely were able to finish (but we put our minds to it, and did). I have no idea about dessert...we simply couldn't. We felt like we'd made a new friend and had dinner in his home. He cared deeply about the enjoyment of every guest. He was passionate and loved every minute of serving us. And that's why it made our top ten. If you find yourself within 50 miles of Il Barrino, in Montisi, it's not to be missed.
