And FTR for a Walmart? Who knew? :)…read more I basically try to ignore any Walmart, with a couple exceptions: 1. Helping my 95 year-old Dad shop at the one in North Ames. It's impressive how well he knows that store and he takes the lead with his shopping cart. 2. Picking up supplemental items while I'm on the road. That's why I found myself at the Boone Walmart. I was coming back from Squeaky Clean Laundry and needed some moisturizing gel for my dry and scaly scalp. And once I was here, why not look around? 3. Being on a trip away from home and being bored. This Walmart was what you'd expect, except it was not so crowded, with easy parking and checkout. Store staff were very nice as well.

In Ames, I notice the Hy-Vee brand in several places. There are 2 grocery stores at opposite ends…read moreof the Lincoln Highway, and associated Liquor Stores and Gasoline Stations. There's also this Drug Store, which looks to be part of a yet-to-be realized development initiative at and around the old Train Station. Gayle was at a Salon at the Train Station getting her nails done. After all, my fabulous wife must mind the beauty details! However, with the Iowa humidity, she would probably go for shorter hair if we actually lived here. Since this takes time, I decided to walk down Main Street and look around. After walking around the Train Station and admiring the architecture (and the safety fence near the tracks), I first wandered into Hy-Vee Drugstore and for some air conditioned relief. This place is a lot larger than it looks from the outside. They have a nice selection of the usual stuff, plus gifts and wine/beer. I ended up buying a padded wine holder to later (and successfully) take back a bottle of Templeton Rye Whiskey back to Iowa. I'll probably be back the next time I'm in town for any travel-related supplies or to just kill a little time.

However, I'm sure that CVS keeps the student and staff population well prescribed and toiletried. Actually, maybe a should up the rating as they carry the Sunday New York Times! Starbucks stopped selling papers and I've come up empty at both big Hyvees in recent times, so seeing "All the News that's Fit to Print" smiling at me here was a real bonus. I've come in for other stuff too, mainly related to pain relief, allergy, shaving, dental, etc. You know, the usual that one would expect at CVS, Walgreen's, Rite Aid, etc. There also a nice small parking lot on the Welch Avenue side if you don't want to fight it on the street on Lincoln Way.

This CVS is located in Campus Town and is in a pretty great location, especially for all the…read morestudents. They stay open pretty late and have their own parking lot (for customers only, otherwise get ready to be towed!) so that's always a plus! The staff is nice and always willing to assist. Sometimes it seems like they're a bit understaffed, especially in the evenings. Nevertheless, a good store for your basic everyday needs.

I stopped in here as a last-ditch effort an hour before close, and wow--these guys absolutely saved me. Duncan was kind, patient, and quick to help. The hours vary so you have to check their hours online, but Walgreen's is my normal go-to for a quick stop for anything medical related... And was my pick for anything Rx related until my insurance pushed me to Hy-Vee or Walmart... Darn you Cigna! Ample parking. Great selection and friendly staff! I appreciate the Rewards savings and availability of over the counter generics. You can never go wrong picking any one of these four locations!
