I was in Boston for a conference this week, and it's always a shame to not do or see anything in…read morethe city where you've been for work. I knew I wouldn't have much free time and needed to get some work done between the end of the conference and leaving for the airport. When I discovered the Athenaeum, I thought - perfect! So what is the Boston Athenaeum? It's a "unique combination of library, museum, and cultural center in a magnificent landmark building . . . One of the country's oldest and most distinguished independent libraries..." It's a great place to work, study, and socialize. The first floor of the Athenaeum (where they have several galleries, including one for temporary exhibits) is open to the public. The rest of the floors are open to members only. Annual membership is currently $506/year or $338 for people 40 and under. However, they offer a day pass ($40), which is how I took advantage of the Athenaeum for a day. There are desks, chairs, patios, tables - tons of places to work and study and read. There are incredible views. The collection of art on the main level was worth seeing, and I also enjoyed their temporary exhibit: "Allan Rohan Crite: Griot of Boston." I wish they had provided a map, because - as a first time visitor - I got very confused by the floorplan. I couldn't find stairs so used the elevator, but one elevator only went to the second of five floors, so ... I wandered, found a place on the fourth floor to work from, and explored. It's really beautiful and it was a great place to get some work done while learning a little about Boston. $40 was a little steep, but it allowed me to get a little bit of a museum visit in while also allowing me the opportunity to work in a more beautiful place for a few hours. I'd happily check it out again. If I lived in Boston, I'd definitely consider becoming a member.

There's a decent sized public parking lot and some fun animal artwork on the fence outside. As another reviewer mentioned, the domed ceiling decoration above the circulation desk as soon as you walk in is gorgeous! I had to stand there for a moment and admire it. I was able to quickly grab a couple books that were on shelves here but not at bigger libraries according to the online catalog. This could be a good strategy for more popular books if you're a big reader! It seems there aren't as many books here as some other libraries, so it's easy to quickly find what you want. It's an older building that seems a little dark inside. I appreciate that they indicate which books are part of a series with a spine sticker, since other libraries typically only call out the genre on these. One book I checked out seemed a little worn, but another was crispy and brand new! This is a convenient option. I just noticed their weekend hours are pretty brief, so this will be better as a weeknight option for me.

Although I live very close to this library, I always went to the Pawtucket Public Library, so I never got a chance until now to go in. I loved the ceiling in the checkout area when you first walk in. There are a couple tables and more comfortable seats to do homework, read books, or hang out. One thing I was impressed by was the printing costs. The first 10 pages for black and white are free, and the first five in color are free. Thereafter, its $0.15 and $0.25 respectively which is not bad. I am used to paying a little more at the Pawtucket Library starting with page one. The back part of the library could use a little more lighting but on sunny days, there is enough clarity to get by. They do have some activities for kids and a little section dedicated to them. There is a parking lot, enough for about 10 cars and I liked the art on the wooden fence in the parking lot.

For starters the librarians are consistently helpful and top-notch. They go out of their way to help you find whatever it is you're looking for and to be available for assistance. The library building itself, while outwardly a bit dated in design, is light, airy and comfortable inside. Sign up for emails from the library on their website and you will hear about upcoming musical concerts, art exhibits, movie showings, the book club, lectures, readings by authors, and a host of other offerings. The library has its own gallery where you can regularly view all kinds of art. In addition to the books, the library has terrific DVD and CD collections. There is art work that you can borrow too and museum passes available. And all this is free! We're so lucky to have a great library system in general but the Hingham library is really something special. It's a great place to spend time.

I want to give a shout out to two really helpful Staff that made my time there seamless. The first one was SYDNEY, actually left the desk and guided me to the right location and used the equipment to get my project done since I was unfamiliar how to maneuver it! The amount of information on the textile revolution is large and they have a 15 min video on the subject. Wendy was very nice and helpful showing me the various brochures and books highlighting the tourist attractions in the area....There are about 10,000 historical sites between Providence and Worcester related to textile mill history....just amazing.... Slater Mill (1793) was the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill in the United States and the first property to be added to the National Register of Historic Places (November 1966). For more than two centuries, people have transformed Slater Mill. These workers have changed the meaning of the mill, from a place for making thread to a place for learning about the consequences of industry....so learning about all that history which was key for our country, was really interesting.... This site is part of the National Park service, so if you want a stamp for your collection, you can ask for it and they will gladly stamp your book for you.

It's located along the Freedom…read moreTrail at 45 School Street where the Boston Latin School, Boston's first public school and the oldest educational institution in the country, first stood. Old City Hall was Boston's third city hall and served as City Hall for 38 mayors between 1865 to 1969 before it was converted to office buildings and a restaurant in the 70s. Currently, there is a Ruth's Chris Steak House in the Old City Hall. You can go into the building, although we just stayed outside in the courtyard, taking photos of the statue of Benjamin Franklin and of the Democratic Donkey.
