I chose a fish dish, which came with two or three large pieces of fish, fried without a coating. I asked for the least spicy sauce, but it was still way too spicy for my tastes! It came with a huge portion of sticky rice. I love that kind of rice, but am unable to eat much due to carbs. My husband got a combo plate that had a nice variety of meat around the huge mound of rice in the middle. His came with a very spicy sauce too, but the main curry sauce was nice and mild. The restaurant itself is small and old. The workers were very busy, but also pleasant and friendly. It was a new, fun experience for us.

I wanted to bring my fiancé to taste more authentic Indonesian food. We got a lot of dishes to try. Our favorites are Pempek, Bakso, Mie Ayam Jamur, and Es Campur with Durian. The Pempek tastes really good. The fish cake, sauce, cucumber, and everything else remind me of how it tastes when I had it in Indonesia. Bakso comes with vermicelli and pangsit goreng. Too bad there's no Indonesian sweet soy sauce and chili condiments. They will compliment very well if mixed with the broth. The beef meatballs and pangsit goreng are good. Mie Ayam Jamur is good all around. Siomay Bandung is disappointing. Don't order this! The siomay itself is very bland. It tastes like an over-steamed bland tofu with a glob of filling in it. The only flavor we could taste was the peanut sauce. Last but not least is the Es Campur with Durian. Good amount of durian on the top and variations of jelly and nata de coco at the bottom. Great dessert. Give this place a try, but don't sit near the wall because a lady at the next table saw a small roach on the wall seat and freaked out. I sat on the wall seat too, so I quickly grabbed a piece of tissue and killed it with no hesitation. Don't know why I did that. Usually I am the one who is scared of bugs lol

Flavors are just a-ok compared to the rich flavors and textures we had in Amsterdam Indonesian restaurants. I'd say this is tuned down quite a bit in flavors and spices. Comparing to Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam may be unfair, but considering the huge southeast Asian population in Sydney, I thought the food could be more authentic. The food is average - meat and ingredients freshness, and cooking were ok quality. The rice was so hard that I couldn't swallow. Price is reasonable, but portion is quite small. Plus you pay extra for rice. I'm old school when it comes to Asian cuisine and I know it's not common anymore, but rice should be free or accompanied with main dishes. It's a simple family cafe with good service.

Our Cantonese heritage taste buds from Hawai'i would have been happy with steaming hot bowls of soup noodles and dumplings after our long travel day. Still, I suggested to my husband that we eat a familiar Asian cuisine we wouldn't usually get back home; hence, Malaysian & Nyonya were the answer. I had bookmarked Ho Jiak Haymarket because it was in the Chinatown neighborhood, where we also planned to explore, and it was about a 15-minute walk from there. We were certainly glad that we didn't have to wait in line to get in, as Google Maps photos show. We were seated immediately and took a few minutes to scroll through their extensive menu, then chose items from the Lunch Specials Menu. The Lunch Specials Menu included an entrée (choose from 8 selections) and a beverage (non-alcoholic or alcoholic) for A$25 or around $17 USD. FOOD: -Hainan Chicken Rice + Teh Tarik (cold): I received a half slow-poached chicken, fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth, and a bowl of chicken broth. The chicken was garnished with fresh cucumber slices, bean sprouts, and cilantro. Also, it was served with chili sauce, soy sauce, and finely chopped ginger root and garlic. The tender poached chicken was juicy, non-greasy, and tasty. This dish was a healthy and toothsome meal. Teh Tarik is a Malaysian "pulled or shaken" milk tea, and I requested it in the cold or iced style because the outside temperature was quite hot. The Teh Tarik was refreshing, thirst-quenching, and flavorful. A$25 -Char Hor Fun + House Beer (Asahi Dry 330 ml): My husband selected this dish, but didn't know what to expect as he doesn't read or speak Chinese. Admittedly, my limited reading of Chinese characters suggested that this dish might be similar to my "usual" Cantonese childhood comfort food, Wat Tan Hor. When the Char Hor Fun was delivered to our table, I immediately recognized it as Wat Tan Hor, except that the egg sauce contained tender pork slices, shrimp, green vegetables, fish cake, and, I think, chunks of fish. The flat, broad rice noodles were stir-fried in soy sauce for additional seasoning, and we could tell the wok heat was perfect because there were very few broken noodles. When the server brought the House Beer, my husband was pleasantly surprised to receive an icy cold bottle of Asahi Dry. A$25 -Loh Bak: We selected this appetizer because of its description and our pork-leaning taste buds. Loh Bak is five-spiced pork jowl rolls wrapped in bean curd skin and deep-fried. We were thinking these pork jowl rolls would surely whet our appetites, and the deep-fried rolls didn't disappoint. A$20 This restaurant was lively, friendly, and clean with authentic-tasting Malaysian and Nyonya flavors. The service was prompt, amicable, and helpful.

Honestly, the menu is a tad bit overwhelming but I opted for one of the signature dishes, Char Koay Teow -- spicy stir fried flat rice noodles with seafood & Chinese sausage. I went with my husband and my adult; they both got dried noodles with beef rendang, and I got nasi bungkus (pretty much assortment of rice, small sides, and beef rendang on a banana leaf. My husband and my daughter received their food fairly fast. I told them to go ahead and eat bc I figured mine would come out soon. After 10 min, 20 min, and 30 min passed I was about to go up and cancel my order. The place was busy, but not crowded, and the employees were just kind of running around. I was looking around and I saw few tables where just 1 or 2 people were eating. Initially I assumed maybe those people eating were there to eat, and non eating people just accompanies them. WRONG! At least 3 other tables were waiting for their food for as long as us. Close to 40 min later my food came out and the server just looked embarrassed and said in a soft voice I am sorry. I don't know what was going on in the kitchen, but the it really left a bad impression. The food was good, I do have to say, but I won't be back.

We don't tolerate spicy food and unfortunately the server didn't asked if we want it spicy or not. Anyway it was good experience to try different dishes from another county. We ordered : Gadogado salad with peanut sauce. It has a lot of rice cake rather than fresh veggies Seafood noodle with gravy was really good Chicken with coconut soup was very spicy . The complete protein was ok. See the menu I posted . Overall it was ok. Probably not used to spicy food but for spicy liver I bet this is an excellent dish.
