Most of the time when you're in a city or a country that's much different than your own, you want to experience their food, but I was so intrigued but this concept that I had to check it out for myself. Sure enough, when I walked in I felt like I ended '50s America. This was a legit old-school diner, but with more wooden fixtures than the checkered patterns and plastic type seating that you may be thinking of. It still had the look and feel of a diner, but with a slightly more polished looked. The wait brought over the menu and a small glass of water. If nothing else, come here just to read the menu. It's hysterical. Small jokes within each menu item. I decided to get breakfast here so I got eggs, bacon, toast and French fries because the waiter didn't understand that I wanted home fries, but whatever. It's a potato so I ate it. The eggs were cooked exactly how I asked for them and the bacon was nice and crispy. Looking around, the milkshakes were passing me by constantly and these huge sandwiches. It really made me see how much we, as Americans consume. Their portions were out of this world big if you got a sandwich or something like that. My meal was just the right size, but as most things in Norway, it was expensive so I passed on the milkshake because I'm sure it was out of my budget. A fun experience none the less. I would take friends here the next time Im in town and if I was a local I'd probably be a regular here if I lived nearby.

I went because I wanted to see Norway's interpretation of a real American diner. It really wasn't bad, but I had to do a triple take when I got the bill. That said, the fries were hot and crispy, the Mac and cheese was delightfully creamy, and the burger was okay. I'd want to try their great-looking breakfast menu, but don't want to go broke for American food on my vacation.

I believe Pascal Dupuy is Norway's leading pastry chef. At least that was what the poster said…read more Besides, he has four of these cafes in Oslo, so who can argue with success? Even though Pascal serves savory cafe fare, most of the attention seemed focused on their rainbow macaroon display and their visually arresting desserts. What drew our attention was all their photos of their soft-serve which they call Softis. It looked really creamy and they covered it in colorful macaron crumbs and placed one macaroon on top. It would be our choice which one to select. After walking to the Royal Palace from our hotel near the train station, we felt we could justify splitting one as it was only about 63 NOK or about $6.50 in US dollars (photo: https://bit.ly/3PNxVtl). Quite a treat though we weren't allowed to sit in the cafe due, I believe, to COVID restrictions. Jamie W. wanted to return a week later when we were back in Oslo. He wanted his own cup since I pinched the peanut butter macaroon entirely. Sharing is for losers. I think that was what Mister Rogers said. Named after Pastry Chef Pascal Dupuy, born French but trained in Norway and part of Oslo's dining…read morescene since 1995, Pascal now consists of several Patisseries and Restaurants including the largest near The Royal Palace. Officially addressed Henrik Ibsens Gate 36, one of the few locations open on Sunday while much of Oslo rests, guests are invited to dine from 12h00 to 17h00 on a collection of Pastries, Salads, Soups, Sandwiches and Desserts. Staffed by friendly servers from take-out to the table, all English fluent with a menu to match, Coffee ranges 49-65 NOK including everything from an honest Espresso to a towering Mocha on Ice. Regarded by Relais Dessert International and Guide des Croqueurs de Chocolat, a range of Truffles lining shelves, Viennoserie is a mixed experience including a good Pan au Chocolate but soggy Almond Croissant while Flan a la Vanille consists of a good Crust surrounding soft Custard with evidence of pure Vanilla Beans throughout. More pricey for Entremet, available to go but plated with Crème Anglaise or Fruit Purees on-site, Pascal's Rhubarb Tart is artful in terms of taste as well as texture while the Feuilletine trends a bit sticky in the Caramel layer which makes cutting without a knife something of a mess. Perhaps best known for homemade Softeis, undeniably produced with top quality Cream and smooth as silk, diners may choose to add a number of toppings with Sea Salt Caramel and crumbled Macarons in a variety of flavors the most popular for good reason.

[[UPDATED REVIEW: September 2022]]…read more 'Ello chaps! Return trip a few years later to a hip "Southern American" restaurant in the artsy district of Oslo, a short bus ride (or even walk) from downtown. As someone from the southern United States, where folks are judged on their fried chicken and BBQ, Lucky Bird hits it out of the park. Simply some of the BEST fried chicken I've ever had -- ANY WHERE. The chicken was perfectly moist, and the breading was crispy without feeling heavy or overly oily. The creamed corn and mashed potatoes were top notch. The only complaint about Lucky Bird is that there weren't more locations around Oslo. This is certainly a gem hiding in plain site. On the return trip the fried chicken was still living up to the standard. Delicious. Overall the sides can really put a dent in your wallet, so you want to be careful with your order. Oh, and the tea - don't order it if you're expecting a traditional southern American sweet tea. Their tea is not that. It's a mix of tea and lemonade it tasted like. This was also one of the few restaurants in Norway we found to have full service (meaning a server took your order) Overall I give Lucky Bird five stars out of five.

A little on the pricier side because you're paying for the view and location, but the meal was delicious and the service was wonderful. I also sampled the salmon and cheesy potatoes (a separate side dish not included with the salmon), both of which were tasty. The best thing, however, was the dessert. A chocolate mousse was plated beautifully on a slate board, and served with white chocolate and raspberry. So delicious! American Express is accepted here and free WiFi. You should come here for THE best breakfast buffet in town!…read more I've had the breakfast here at Grilleriet during my last three stays at the Hotel Folketeateret next door (it's included in the room rate) and in fact the breakfast is the reason why I'm not bothering to try out any other hotels in Oslo - it's the most convincing argument...ever! What's so great about it? - Well, for one it is the sheer amount of variety that makes this breakfast buffet so good. - You could seriously walk up an appetite by simply strolling along it from one end to the other: there's many different kinds of breads - flat breads, rye breads, crunchy breads; then there's a plenty of different cheeses (I love the cumin-flavoured one) and also a nice assortment of cold cuts (such as hams & salamis). Then there's different kinds of smoked or marinated fish, coming with all sorts of condiments. The warm dishes should be mentioned as well: fried or scrambled eggs and a station where you can self-assemble your omelet . The obligatory bacon is there too, but also sausage, some sort of warm liver paté and...very randomly...a warm aubergine salad. The space itself is also fantastic: it's a vast room, but it feels so comfortable and cozy in there that I could hang out there forever. They have a nice mix of small, larger and huge communal tables. (I actually tend to spend my mornings here and set up my computer on one of the communal tables - the hustle and bustle makes my creative juices flow so nicely ;-) As for lunch and dinner, I cannot say much, but I was here with my Norwegian colleague the other day and she said that she had a terrific dinner here as well. Apparently they put chairs around the open kitchen bar and folks can thus watch the chefs preparing the food while eating and chatting. Go, Grilleriet, go!

It irks me because I make reservations specifically so I do not have to wait for a table. This place has no good waiting area either, so you just stand around like a fool trying not to get in anyone's way. Also, when we walked in, it was hard to breathe. I am not sure if the place always smells of oversmoked meats or if they had an issue the evening we were there, but wow, the smell was intense. I had gotten used to the smell by the time we were finally seated. Our server was a little slow, both with service and in the head, but he seemed to try his best with what he was given. All of the above is why I deducted a star, which should tell you how fricken awesome the food was since I typically rate a place quite low if the service wasn't up to par. Now onto the good part: The words that came out of my mouth after the first bite of my steak were something like "now I know why people spend so much money on good food." I am pretty sure I repeated this several times. It was the best steak I had ever had. It was cooked to perfection and so tender I cut through it like it was warm butter (cold butter is not easy to cut through). It is so good it forces you to eat slow because you dread the second that taste is not in your mouth. There were other things on my plate too. There was some type of glazed onion and some potato thing (yes, I am that fancy) and both were quite good, but seriously, don't waste your time with these extras if you get full fast like I do. There are not many places that have service that irks me that can make up for with their food, but Grilleriet definitely did. I would let them verbally abuse me if it meant I got to eat that steak again.
