    A5 ribeye

Great price on a5! Really no other place for this type of selection in the area. Also lots of hot pot stuff!

Quality meat house in San Mateo.

Excellent well marbled dry aged steaks with a matching price…read more I got a few big dry aged ribeyes and they were fantastic. I did dry brine them for a day before cooking, followed by a 2-zone charcoal grill (sear over the charcoal, bring up to temp away from the charcoal). The steak was fantastic - very tender, very juicy, and just a hint of the dry aged flavor. If you want the funkiness that a 60+ dry aged steak will bring this isn't it, but if you want something just a bit more complex than other steaks you'll definitely like this. $230 for 4 steaks isn't cheap, HOWEVER you'd never find this quality of dry aged steak in this quantity for that price at a steakhouse, and you won't find this quality at Costco or Whole Foods. The only comparable steaks I have had are from the premium online retailers, and I've tried many of them. Flannery Beef, Snake River Farms. DeBragga, Lobel's, Pat LaFrieda - all will sell you a very good steak. But: 1. It will cost more, given shipping 2. It will take longer 3. You're not supporting a local business So if it's Friday and you want a restaurant-or-better quality steak, Gambrel is the obvious choice. While I didn't purchase anything besides steak, I did notice they sell lots of high end Italian foods and charcuterie. It looked good and the prices matched the meat, maybe next time. Steak and pasta does make a good if indulgent meal. The overall vibe is of an old school butcher and specialty shop. Even if you've never been in one it's something you've seen on TV or a movie. The guy at the counter was also helpful with figuring out the portion I needed, fast at cutting, and trimmed the ribeyes beautifully. The only downside has to be the parking. Downtown Redwood City is just a disaster. I know they can't fix it but I seriously almost didn't come because the main thought in my head was "ugh am I going to be able to find a spot within walking distance?" Fortunately I was able to park right out front since it wasn't peak hours but that was just pure luck.

Their cheese selection is incredible, and they even carry real French butter, which completely made my day. What really made the experience exceptional, though, was Christina in the cheese department. Her knowledge of cheese was honestly unbelievable. She took the time to answer my questions, make recommendations, and help me find exactly what I needed. It's rare to find someone who is that passionate, knowledgeable, and helpful. The entire store is also beautiful. Everything is displayed so nicely, and there are so many great options throughout the store. I originally went in looking for a few specialty items, but Piazza's is definitely going to become one of my regular grocery stores.

I've been coming here for years, which is why it honestly saddens me to even have to write this review. Unfortunately, my recent experience with an employee named Natalia left me extremely uncomfortable and disappointed. During my visit, I overheard comments she was making with another staff member that I found very inappropriate and uncomfortable. When I needed assistance finding products, I also felt that she was very dismissive and acted as though helping me was an inconvenience. Before leaving, I made sure to get her name from another employee who was kind enough to assist me. I had never experienced anything like this at Piazza's before, and it was especially disappointing because I have always had positive experiences with the other employees. The staff I've interacted with over the years have been kind, welcoming, and helpful. As someone who has supported Piazza's for years, it's upsetting that one employee's behavior has made me feel like I no longer want to shop somewhere I've been a loyal customer of. I truly hope management takes this seriously and speaks with Natalia about how customers are being treated.I rarely see her working so in my opinion they should fire her and find someone with better attitude. I have always enjoyed supporting Piazza's, and I hope this situation can be addressed so that longtime customers continue to feel respected, comfortable, and welcomed when they walk through the doors.

Unfortunately, my experience at the meat counter completely changed my opinion. I ordered 1 lb of chicharrón. I usually go to Chavez Market, but I decided to give this place a try. Everything was fine until the employee started cutting the chicharrón into smaller pieces. Instead of using a clean cutting board, he placed a piece of paper over a cutting board that had just been used for raw meat. While cutting, a large piece of my chicharrón rolled off the paper and touched the raw meat sitting next to it. He quickly grabbed it back like nothing happened, but I clearly saw it. To make things worse, another employee handed him a knife that had just been used on raw meat and simply wiped it off with a towel instead of properly sanitizing it. That is a serious food safety concern. I ended up paying around $15 for food I no longer felt comfortable eating. I really wanted to like this place, but proper food handling and sanitation should be taken much more seriously. I would love to get my money back but im sure they wont honor it.

But as a corner grocer with great grab and go options and a hot food counter, it's a gem. Continually staying optimistic as while the price was far from super friendly, some items were sold out so I feel like I might be missing out on some of the better items. Items tried: -Unagi Crawfish Musubi (5/5): Yes. Unagi was cooked well and the crawfish is such a nice texture. it was soggy but it was soooo good. -Tuna poke (2/5): fish had some fishiness and minerality, not much in terms of tuna flavor. It was far from the impact I felt when I had a different market from San Jose's Poke. -Tako Poke (3/5): well cooked octopus, lightly sauced but nothing amazing -Flank Steak Musubi (1.5/5): I wasn't a huge fan of the rice to meat ratio, and the steak flavor was covered by the sauce. If you really want to try it, go for it. It was not for me. The seaweed felt bland. -Side of rice: Good cook on the rice. Might be dry for some but it was similar in texture and grain separation to the rice i make at home. Nothing to write home about, it's rice.
