Sean was hired by my incompetent HOA board to repair a poorly constructed stair tower. Two engineering firms and countless contractors told us that the only way to properly fix our problem was to knock down the structure and rebuild. This was mainly due to the structure being built without rebar. Sean was literally the only contractor who said bricks could be replaced. This is indicative of the quality of work that he performed. They only added rebar in a few replaced bricks, which as would only act as a bandaid rather than fix the problem and source of the damaged structure. Because our board choose to cut corners and kick the can down the road, they hired the cheapest contractors available despite being told it was not the right choice by over 10 contractors and 2 engineers. Some people like cheap and crappy. If that's what you are looking for, hire Mcvan. Cheap. crappy and unprofessional is what you will get. read more

We bought our condo from McVan in 2008 when it was one year old and had never been lived in. Within weeks of moving in, we discovered that the windows POURED water when it rained. We contacted them immediately, and they shifted the responsibility to their general contractor, who then shifted it back to McVan. For a FULL YEAR, we received endless blame-shifting and zero repairs. During this time, we also found out that they had been in our unit mopping up after a big rain the week before we signed the contract, and were well aware of the problems from other unit owners in the building. What's more, they never completed our punchlist items, didn't even remove their construction supplies from the unit and building, and left their combo padlock (which we didn't have the combo for) on the front gate. They were dismissive and refused to take responsibility for any of the issues. We feel trapped in the house; we can't sell it or rent it in the condition it's in, and we can't fix it without considerable expense. We bought a new place specifically to avoid this, and it's been a nightmare. I STRONGLY advise against any relationship with McVan or their affiliates. read more

Contacted them for concrete stairs replacement was completed and to find that they are not pitched correctly so water sits on stair until it evaporates. This is a real problem for Chicago winter, I contacted them and was told it will be remedied. To find out that the job was pawned off as an internal side job to there employees which I was not told so of coarse it has not been repaired. Have been promised the world by them and here we are 9/29/17 winter around the corner and nothing. If I don't fix the snow will freeze every time and someone will slip and get hurt. So I have come to the conclusion that I will have it repaired and take them to small claims court and let a judge decide. Food for thought before using them. read more

Hmm... Hired McVan to build a 32 ft. garage-type addition to be used as a dog play area, with cost over 50k. I did pressure them to start during the winter in order to finish on time. In retrospect, this was a bad idea, but he said it could be started. So for months, it was just outside walls sitting there, as construction could not continue during bad weather. I don't know if this has anything to do with the issues I have though. I also got flack from my neighbors when they put construction materials on their property. So two issues: My main problem is that every time it rains the room floods with water. It comes in from both doors (including the door facing the yard on the other side), the ceiling leaks, and water comes in from under the garage door. I contacted Sean of McVan about this issue, and it was not resolved. I have had to use mold-stop cleaner on the walls several times from all the moisture in the room after it rains. Secondly, I do not like the quality of how things were finished. For example, some of the ceiling boards look like someone went nuts with a nail gun, things are crooked, some of the beams don't fit exactly. I don't like seeing a gap between the boards and tons of nails sticking out sideways like someone has bad aim. It's just sloppy. The cement floor was supposed to be ready to go, all I wanted to do was seal it, so I had them do a colored cement. However, it was not even, making the puddles even worse. It did not look good at all. I hired another company (Hard Rock Terazzo) to polish the concrete and sand it down more evenly for $2,800, they did a good job, but it only helped a little in making it more even with less puddles. I've also hired other contractor to drywall it, build closet, more finishing, and thousands more put into this one room to get it use-able and decent looking. I would say this company is better to use for concrete work than for building things, as their finishing skills are not good, no attention to detail. I guess the floor should have been built higher. read more

Sean saved us! He has successfully tackled an extremely complex and difficult job our HOA had encountered. We had a few bad cracks in a CMU stair tower due to the original developer failing to use rebar and we had extremely corroded metal & concrete balconies which were failing. Most other contractors wanted to rip down the entire tower, demo all balconies and completely rearchitect the building. This would have been way more involved, costly and time consuming which could have forced the HOA to deconvert and sell the entire building. Sean and his team came out, inspected the property and realized that would have been overkill and that the other guys were probably just trying to rip us off. He said he could salvage all of the metal framing, I-beams, and 90% of the CMU stair tower. His plan for the stair tower was to remove a few CMU blocks and install rebar, pour grout and reinforce the entire tower. For the balconies, he believed he could demo all of the concrete and metal pans and just install new ones over the existing I-Beams. He would clean up, prime and paint all the metal and reinforce as needed. Everyone in the HOA was skeptical, but after he answered everyone's questions with a clear vision, we took a chance and are so thrilled to have done so. Sean and his team worked diligently and professionally throughout the entire restoration project. He managed to get the permits, used some very clever repair techniques on CMU, and has done an impeccable job on all of the concrete and metal work...all within a few months (in the fall and winter). Things came up here and there that were originally out of scope, but Sean was able to use his network to get the job done. The restoration project is outstanding and I would highly recommend you work with Sean in all of your CMU, concrete and metal work! We plan to work with him on future projects! If you go this route I guarantee you will find hidden shortcuts, poor workmanship and violations of every ethical building standard known or unknown to the profession. DO NOT HIRE! We were quoted 3-4 days for the project to be completed and it took 13 days. They had bad concrete on the first pour, but instead of stopping the pour they continued to concrete the entire back yard. Then they had to start all over. You would think they would do everything in their power to make up for the lost time, however, there were two days where no one showed up or called to tell us they were not showing up. When I contacted Sean he could not and would not give me a reason for the no shows. Upon completion of the job, the concrete stamping was poor, but the color of the concrete was really nice. Their housekeeping skills are completely lacking. There was visible caked on concrete all over my sidewalk, the fence where they dumped all of the gravel before the concrete was bent out of shape and there was concrete on my pool. Sean contacted us for payment after the patio was done asking for payment. I told him that the housekeeping needed to be done before we would pay him. I had to go back and forth with Sean for a while before he would send someone to do the housekeeping. He sent one guy and the poor guy had his son there to help him. Still the fence isn't fixed, there is still concrete caked on the sidewalk and there is still concrete on our pool. We just paid Sean to get rid of him. He didn't want to show face with us so he sent someone else to pick up the payment. Do not hire these guys, you will regret it. read more
