We were sent to this place by a local person and had high hopes. When we walked in, we got that "feeling", ya know the one that says, "turn around and walk out." I have found that feeling to be rarely wrong but I did the stupid thing and overpowered my instinct and we sat down. (That was partially to do with the fact the wait staff was so nice!! And hence why the place as three stars instead of 2) We did our usual thing and ordered appetizers to see if the place stood up and surprisingly their appetizers were top notch! Bolstered with fresh confidence we ordered dinner. Bad idea. Now I must first say that I have lived in Hawaii for 6 years previously and know good local food. The dinners came out fried and greasy. They were heart attacks on a plate and what wasn't fried was covered in sugary sauces. We were so disappointed. (sad face) I know they have a local following and if you love sugary fried foods this is the place for you just not for us. Went here with my friend and order a large saimin. By the time i was getting to the bottom of the bowl, there was a LONG BLACK HAIR sitting at the bottom of the bowl......GROSS.... I showed the waitress and asked for a new saimin but by then i wasn't hungry anymore. When we got the check the waitress insisted that I had to pay for BOTH of the saimins even though I sent the first one back... I will definitely never eat here again!!! Friendly staff and a decent ambience. The vegetarian food although was not to my expectation. Had the vegetarian meat loaf - was quite dry and bland. The vegetarian noodles were not good either. What a great opportunity to enjoy traditional Island food! The oxtail soup had my boyfriend reminiscing about sitting in his grandmothers kitchen. Very casual atmosphere. It was homey but kind of in a dilapidated way. The server was very nice with a big smile and a helpful demeanor - which we needed because we weren't familiar with many of the menu items. The plantation tea was great and so was what I ordered. I had saimin soup. I thought about getting the corn beef hash loco moco but I had a greater hankering for soup. Fresh, vegetarian & vegan friendly, which is a challenge on an island full of steakhouses and sushi. This was a pleasant alternative. I had the crispy sea bass the special tonight and hubby had the vegetarian meatloaf and the Thai salad. Prices are very reasonable for Hawaii. Tasty & fresh. We were looking for a place to eat lunch after our morning exploration of Waimea Canyon. My boyfriend spotted some vegetarian-friendly items on the menu, so we decided to give MCS a try. The menu at the time did not include the vegetarian sampler or the vegetarian meatloaf - that OK. The boyfriend and I split the loco moco vegetarian-style. Very exciting! As I'd never tried loco moco until then! We also split the vegetarian burger (made out of barley, bulgur, and quinoa), which was a similar (maybe the same?) patty used in the loco moco. Delicious! My wife and I were looking for a place to grab lunch after spending the morning at the Kauai Coffee Company and chanced upon MCS Grill. In speaking with the owners (who also work in the restaurant - always a good sign), they opened less than a month ago. If they maintain the quality of their food to be what we had at lunch today, they should be open for many years to come. My wife had the Loco-Moco (she has had this dish in the past at other restaurants) and I had the Hawaiian Chili Peppa Chicken (which I've had in the past, also elsewhere). The food here blew them all out of the water. The chicken was just the right amount of spicy, and just the right kind of spicy. What I mean by that is that my mouth felt the heat but wasn't on fire, and the heat came from flavorful seasoning rather than just being spicy for the sake of spicy. The portions of both dishes were generous, the service was fast and extremely friendly, and the prices are extremely reasonable. We are making it a point to come back here at least one more time before our vacation to Kauai ends, and we are so glad that we went exploring for lunch and found this place. After a relaxing day at the beach we were looking for a place to grab a bite to eat and found the MCS Grill on Yelp and saw the great reviews. What a delightful dinner...the pork ribs were fall off the bone good with just the right amount of BBQ sauce and the meatloaf with mashed potatoes tasted like mom's. Finished the dinner with a passion fruit, orange and mango chiffon cream cheese square...light and fluffy but beware...the square is BIG!! It could be shared between two. Worth searching for! Big building,small signage on the left side of Hanapepe as you head back to Lihue after a trip to Kokee. Met two of the owners..... friendly, attractive, professional young ladies. Excellent service. We stopped for lunch and enjoyed the food so much that we returned for dinner the same day. We enjoyed sharing the pulled pork nachos. Then two orders of the shrimp scampi disappeared rapidly. We will probably get there again before heading home. read more

Some of the best food I have ever eaten at a restaurant in a long time. The Peppa Chicken was great. Dessert special of the day were Taro Puff balls with coconut cream.....AWESOME! What an awesome meal. I came in with my family after whale watching, and I'm so glad we stopped in. It's just a short drive from Port Allen. It is a very friendly, local vibe- there were no tourists other than us. We started with the vegetarian trio- it is out of this world. I don't care for curry, but my dad and sisters loved it. I went crazy for the meatballs. I also had the seimin, which is like ramen. I enjoyed it- the portions are HUGE. I could have gotten the small and been more than satisfied. Combo platter we got was the chili peppa chicken and it was was great, the mac salad that comes with it was different and enjoyable, it also comes with fried noodles and brown rice. Loco moco was good, not the best I've ever had. Served with brown rice which is more healthy but not as tasty, in my opinion. Also, the gravy was a bit bland and that's what I look forward to most with my loco moco, a wonderful deep rich gravy. The hamburger could have also been more seasoned but again! It was good, just not the best I've ever had. Honestly if you're hungry and you're in the area, you will leave feeling satisfied. After a morning of combing a nearby beach for sapphire and ruby-colored beach glass, we found this lovely jewel of a restaurant. We caught them just before closing early for Father's Day and we are so lucky we did! We were greeted with smiles by the friendly waitstaff and offered a large spacious table for our family to sit together. Was that ahi poke delicious. I was swooning it was so yummy. This is a homey local family restaurant. No alcohol. But wonderful island ice tea that was fruity without being too sweet.
