This review is long overdue but the kindness of the staff at McNerney's Mortuary is still felt, even after a year and a half. After receiving the crushing news from the hospital that our father had passed (very unexpectedly), my sister and I were thrown/launched/catapulted into the very adult decision of what to do with his body. Having grown up in the area, we were familiar with the local mortuaries, and it took just two phone calls to make the easy decision to choose McNerney's Mortuary for our needs. I had originally spoken with Thomas McNerney and his compassion, empathy, positive energy, and kindness were the reasons I felt so confident that we were making the right choice. After discussing costs, and learning that McNerney's was WAY less expensive than the first (well known) mortuary I spoke with, a seemingly impossible decision was made so easy. During that time, my sister and I were having to make some of the worst choices a person is sometimes forced to make in life. Besides Thomas, other members of the staff, Samantha and Esther, treated us with such respect, compassion, and patience during the entire process. They guided and helped us with choices and timelines, completing important documents, and making all necessary arrangements with the hospital and the crematorium. We knew we, and our father, were in very good hands with McNerney's and that comfort allowed my sister and I to focus on all the other important things that must be dealt with upon a loved one's passing. First, the bad the sound system quit and although there were four members of the facility present no one attempted to fix it. Representatives spoke while wearing masks but without the microphone, instructions should have been given to speak at the microphone but had not been. Nothing could be heard. Parking is seriously limited. The good. The facility is pleasant and appropriate for the occasion. It is air conditioned and the pews have cushions (some staining is present, you may want try flipping a few. The staff are adequate for the service especially the pastor. They are able to provide music in lieu of a performer you request. read more

My wife and I were married 45+ years & sadly passed away at Torrance Memorial, March 9th, 2019, from cancer. Being in our 60's, we already had our end-of-life conversation at the beginning of 2018 (before she got sick) as we had discussed the details for each of our wishes etc. We unfortunately didn't "pull the trigger" on pre-paying at any mortuary but I had saved the estimates & information from the several places I contacted. Deciding on cremation, I had already knew I wanted to utilize McNerney's Mortuary because of their long-standing reputation here in San Pedro so I called them immediately after my wife passed to begin this most difficult task. From the moment I made that first call, to the family meeting we had with with Tom McNerney Sr. a few days later, through all of the decisions working with him & Esther DeLeon, they were absolutely professional, compassionate, dignified and understanding. They took care of everything, explaining the process as it progressed even displayed a wonderful listing with her picture in their lobby after we arranged my wife's "Celebration of Life" at our own church in Lomita! A heartfelt "thank you" to Thomas McNerney Sr. and his wonderful, caring staff for taking care of my "beautiful girl" and for extending their care to me and my family at a very difficult time! (P.S. - few weeks later I went back to prepay for my arrangements there so my sons & family will not have to make hard decisions at a difficult time. After attending a service for my uncle I was disappointed with their sound system.  It would seem their mic was broken. There was a staff member present & attempted to fix the mic issue (mic kept falling) but that did not resolve the sound problem.  Obviously their sound system is seriously outdated. Since there was "Live Streaming" taking place during the service, I assumed I could watch later for better clarity. After pulling up their "Live Webcast" it was obvious this simple stream (I believe I saw one smart phone on a tripod?), wasn't tested before the funeral to ensure everything was running correctly. I found out later, it wasn't "Live Streamed" because they had technical problems. Knowing they had these problems @ the beginning they should have checked all the equipment especially the mics. When they finally uploaded this video they streamed it upside-down & the audio was terrible, amongst other things. This is shoddy workmanship. Why not check this video before posting? The family rep. reached out twice & they tried to fixed (they had an excuse why these things happen)  Although it no longer showed upside-down, I personally didn't see much of an improvement especially with the audio & there were no close ups of the speakers. I've seen many videos but never one setup @ the center aisle only. Maybe they should have shot from the front of the Chapel.  I would recommend hiring a professional (with multiple mics) & experience. They showed no empathy for leaving the family with a video that didn't fully capture the service that we planned as a fitting tribute to our loved one and the keepsake they promised. Furthermore,  there was no refund offered for this shoddy production. read more

I just recently had to use the services of a Mortuary to bury my mother and I must tell you it was the best experience I could' have possibly imagine I will always be indebted to the kind and empathetic staff especially Suzie and Tom. I would highly recommend Mcnerneys for all of your needs in this regard. I'm posting 32 years after the fact but we didn't have the internet 32 years ago. My father was a mortician/funeral director working at McNerney's when, on his day off, he had a massive coronary and passed. My parents lived in an apartment at the Mortuary at the time. The staff took care of him, of course, but the care they gave my mother was extraordinary. They paid her my father's salary for six weeks, they had my brother choose the casket my father would have wanted (my sister was with her husband, who was stationed in Okinawa, and I was in Michigan), they did not charge my mother for any of the arrangements. His funeral and burial were being held in Michigan, where we'rfrom. They were WONDERFUL and, as I sit here, on the eve of the 32nd anniversary of my father's passing (he was just 56, by the way), I just had to give my thanks to the mortuary who treated my family so well. They gave us peace of mind while showing my mother how much my father was valued by all those who worked with him on a daily basis. My mom moved back to Michigan within six weeks but without their assistance, even that would have been made more difficult. Thank you for the service you provide. I grew up in the industry so was probably more insightful as to what it entails but when you're dealing with the loss of your loved one, it's a blessing to have such caring people handling things. read more

From " forgetting" to fill out/ file the paperwork for the death certificate to " allowing" 4 family members only to a post Covid members viewing. For the most part, they were wonderful. Neil was fantastic and extremely professional. Carly was helpful and professional, but when she was out of the office, there was no automated reply to email to let you know that. The biggest issue was my brother had to help with moving our Mom from the house onto the gurney and into the vehicle to transport her to the mortuary. The people who were contracted couldn't do it & we were still charged the full transport fee. read more

Sadly, we had to use McNerney's recently with the passing of my father-in-law. They were very compassionate, kind, and professional. Yes there were a couple of minor hiccups which may have warranted a score of 4 stars, but there was one employee in particular who made it impossible not to give McNerney's 5 stars. This would be the gentleman who was the quarterback for my father-in-law's rosary, funeral mass, and burial services. His name is Neil, and he was just great. My father prepaid his funeral for $6,900 and we did not have a service. Tom jr promised me a refund of $4,600. After 5 weeks, I followed up and asked about a refund and he yelled at me that "by law, he didn't owe me a dime". Any way, the following day he reassured me that the charges were for overhead fees and that he wasn't profiting a dime from me. I have never been treated more poorly or with more contempt and would strongly urge anyone not to give a dime to Mcnernys. Truly the most horrific people I have ever dealt with. read more

We just buried my mother last week. Which is a difficult time in anyones life. This was the third time I used McNerneys services. We used their services in 2005 for my brother and in 2015 for my father So I know what I am saying when I say the staff couldn't have been more helpful or caring in all they did for me and for my family. We attended a memorial recently and were disappointed that the facility was AGAIN unable to play the DVD slideshow provided by the decased family. The same thing happened to us when a family member passed- the staff was unable to play a video slideshow for some unknown reason. Luckily for us, one of our guests was able to play it on is laptop and project it onto the wall. After our bad experience, we voiced our concerns to the staff in the hopes that it would not happen to another grieving family, so this added to our dissapointment. Makes me wonder if we would have purchased the DVD with the funeral package, it would have played. read more

Everything was done perfectly and every little detail was done with class and elegance. Parking is plentiful--2 private lots and plenty of street parking the staff members are very friendly, attentive and consoling. Although I did not personally make the funeral arrangements for my relative who just passed, I understand that Mcnerney's works with your budget and won't try to gouge you in your time of loss. They explained the options in detail and didn't pressure my cousins into signing up with them. In fact, they encouraged my cousins to check out other mortuaries to compare prices and services, and they ended up coming back to Mcnerney's. They have been kind but as a business they seem a little disorganized. Messages are not always returned. They include the payment owed in the contract but when you sign the contract you are obviously a bit distracted (with the recent death of a loved one). We kept waiting for a bill to pay what we knew we owed. Finally one day they called us asking where our payment was. We asked about a bill and they said they were no longer sending them because the person who usually did that was out of the office. So I supppose they expected us to pay the bill on our own without receiving a bill? Then I called to pay it. Apparently only certain people can take payment. The person who took my call left a message for someone who was apparently out of the office all week. Meanwhile there was someone else in the office who could take payment but no message was given to her and she didn't call us back either. read more

We recently lost our Mother unexpectedly. McNerney's was on the list the hospital gave us to make arrangements. They did a wonderful job helping us make all the arrangements and their costs were extremely reasonable. They don't try and sell you things you don't want or need. They also met us at the church and literally handled everything for us. I cannot speak highly enough of both Susie, who helped with the arrangements and Neal who met us at the church the morning of. Their kindness and sensitivity and this very difficult time did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Everything went exactly as it was planned. Neal's behind the scenes help at the church was amazing. i cannot speak highly enough of McNerney's. my husband and i lost our baby and were in the middle of extreme grief as you could imagine. the hospital where i had the miscarriage recommended another mortuary and it was a HORRIBLE experience of shuffling us around then trying to up-sell us on things we didn't want or need. we walked away from there, thank god, and went straight to McNerney's. they were so kind and tender and made this whole process as easy as possible for us. the price was very reasonable for a cremation and i would support this family owned business ANY day. big corporation funeral homes are to be avoided at all cost and family run businesses like this one should be embraced. thank you so much for everything McNerney's! we truly appreciate you. read more

I highly recommend McNerney's Mortuary! Unfortunately, I had to say good--bye to my mother on February 12, 2020 and from the moment I called them til the moment my mother was buried on March 5, 2020 I had nothing but excellent service! Everyone I dealt with was very down to earth, compassionate and they never left me with any questions. Having a funeral for a loved one during the pandemic came with its hurdles but McNerney's took every precaution to make us feel completely safe and they made sure my moms service went over smoothly! With a limited number allowed to be in person I was given the opportunity to share a link with family and friends so they could attend my moms mortuary chapel service and also my moms gravesite service over the internet (this was great because no one was left out). A HUGE thank you to Susie who went above and beyond to make sure my moms service was beautiful and memorable. Susie made every step of the process seem not like a process. My experience here at McNerney was not as a client, however, I was treated HORRIBLY and DISRESPECTFULLY. I was one of the person to help deliver flower arrangement to this mortuary for the funeral service. As this was my first time delivering, I had no idea where the "flower room" is. When I walked into the front desk with flower arrangement, the employee " JESSICA " tried to explain where flowers need to be delivered. Only if she explained in a nice manner, I wont be writing this review. The way JESSICA treated me was very disrespectful. She directed me to the "side door" of the building, which I had no idea where that is, she seemed very annoyed and said, "I'm very busy, just leave it here" and chuckled at me as if I'm some stupid little one. I do not know how she treats other customers here, but I could also be considered as one of their customers. I really did not appreciate such disrespectful manner.
