They were totally professional and thorough in considering my needs. My new prescription was a bit unusual because it is a temporary fix between cataract surgeries. So they spoke to my doctor directly to confirm it was being filled correctly. They promised to turn them around in two days, and they were done on time. Bought some montblanc sunglasses awhile ago from Nordstrom rack (there was no warranty). The glasses ended up losing the screws that held the frame and earpieces together. I searched high and low for anyone who could fix them but nobody carry's montblanc anything. Called about 5 shops, went into 2 optometrists in the area. Nobody could help. Online there were no repair kits that had the size required to fix my sunglasses. I called McNelly and spoke with Linda Kintu. She was super helpful and even went out of her way to help me find montblanc's repair website. Unfortunately that ended up not working out, but Linda said I could come in and they could see what they could do to help. When I arrived at the storefront, Linda was very welcoming and nice! Absolute people person. Linda and Ed Marshall took a look at my glasses and realized that it would require a specialized custom part to fix them, and that they didn't have the part. However, they decided to go above and beyond to help me and were able to somehow construct the part needed out of what they had in the shop. I needed new glasses. I had purchased bargain brands in the past, and I was tired of glasses that didn't fit or broke easily. I was impressed with the personal service McNelly Optical provided. First they looked at my face and showed frame styles that would complement me. Then I was shown the many frames in many price ranges. Although I picked an expensive frame, they are so worth it! I went to McNeely based on my PCP's recommendation after bad experiences at two other highly rated Annapolis Opticians. I worked with Ed Marshall who has been with McNeely since the 80's. Not sure, but believe he's part of the ownership family. Ed listened to my issues with progressive lenses. I don't have a difficult prescription at all, just a typical 60 year-old presbyopic. I needed lenses for a computer environment and all the PALS fitted elsewhere were very spotty-focused with lots of peripheral distortion. The lenses Ed recommended were completely different with wide focusing corridors and a field of vision as expected from an "occupational" lens. Why that was so hard for others to fit was beyond me. I was told repeatedly that I'd get used to the peripheral distortion (it's normal) and get used to focusing on the one spot that was actually in focus. "It often takes up to two months to work with them." Maybe a week or two, but who wants to sit working on the edge of vertigo for two months! Forget that. I highly recommend Ed Marshall. He knows optics and happily spends lots of time answering every question I could think of. Give McNeely on Giddings a try! Oh, and even though my lenses were a rear-surfaced, individual digital design (Shamir Autograph Office), I had them in less than a week from dropping off my frames and placing my order. read more

These people (I worked with Ed, and his father, who own the business-they are at the Giddings Ave location) are devoted to what they do, and to a happy customer. I have been back several times now for different prescriptions and they nailed it! Had fun too. This place is like businesses used to be. Forget anything else; go here. Do bring your own frames if you want something quite unusual; because McNelly is a smaller business you will find an adequate selection but nothing too offbeat. I have been coming here for about 25 years. Love that they are family owned. It really comes through. The other week, the bridge of my glasses just snapped in half. I called and was told I could stop by. Even though he was very busy with other work, Ed fixed my glasses right away! It literally only took 5 minutes. He also let me know how much it would cost before he started the work. I forgot my credit card, and was able to pay for the repairs over the phone using my mom's card. My family's been going to McNelly for twenty years. They have always been the most professional and understanding people I have dealt with in the medical field. One time I had to go to a "Brand X" optician who gave me a prescription that I took to McNelly. They told me the prescription could not be right, given the fact that I had a previous one that they had filled. Lo and behold, when I took it back to "Brand X" they admitted that they had written the proscription reversed. We started at the Giddings ave. office and now go to the Sajak Pavilion at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Both have awesome people. My husband and I had an exceptionally good experience buying glasses at McNelly Optical in Annapolis -- a company that was recommended by our ophthalmologist.  My husband wanted to keep his cherished old frames and have new progressive lenses made, which Ed Marshall (McNelly's chief optician) was happy to do.  Based on my husband's preferences, Ed recommended some reasonably-priced, top quality high-index lenses and did a superb job of adapting them to the frames. As for my own glasses, because I'm very nearsighted and also need progressive lenses, I usually have difficulty finding stylish frames that can mask the lens thickness. But I happened to find an ideal Ted Baker frame among McNelly's carefully-chosen selection and Ed did a fantastic job on my new glasses. I see better with them than those made by other opticians in Annapolis who charged quite a bit more. Ed is an amiable fellow with many years of experience and a vast knowledge of optics, lens materials and new developments in these fields, which he is willing to share with his customers while patiently answering all of their questions.  I was particularly impressed when after wearing my new glasses for a week I went back to have the nosepads adjusted and he took the time not only to expertly resolve my nosepad issue, but also to fine-tune the overall fitting of the glasses. They don't even deserve ONE star!!! They are horrible. Staffed by two women who are friendly UNTIL YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. I have been back five times to have my lenses fixed and they're still not right! I paid four times as much as I did for the last several pair I bought somewhere else. I only went here because my eye doctor is next door. I have never gotten so much as an apology for the problems. All I've gotten is a nasty, surly attitude from these two. Once my glasses are "right", if ever, I will NEVER GO BACK! I strongly urge you to stay away from them. They are overpriced and you can get the same glasses elsewhere for much less. AND, you'll get much better service. read more

It may sound a little silly to gush about an eyewear experience...but, I'm ok with that. I was a "walk-in" at McNelly trying to knock off my to-do list something I'd been putting off for too long. I've never enjoyed the process of trying on endless frames before settling on ones I end up hating on myself as soon as I get home and look in my own mirror. But THAT is because I had never worked with Pam before. She spent well over 45 minutes with me trying on as many frames as I wanted...both of her choosing and mine until we narrowed down to just a couple and settled on ones she expertly picked for me early on! She is honest and patient and unbelievably knowledgeable in all things eyewear related. Finally someone took the time and care to help with a decision that really is hard to make...and one that really does matter every single day!
