Went after the renovations and what an experience. Very clean, safe, and super pleasant staff. Highly Recommend, especially as a group. Get out with the boys, the girls, and the family. Also staff were helpful and again really kind. read more

Just went plinking here. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves, however- a couple pointers from the range officers is ok, but it seemed that at times, you couldn't get one mag done without either striking a conversation with the range officers or them telling you about some (new trick). The female range officer was in the military/army and kept interrupting my wife and son while shooting. A few times ok- but kinda leave us alone unless we are performing a range infraction of some sort: which we weren't. She brought up how to shoot again, and finally my wife said, "we're all good, I've been coached by my husband... he was in the 82nd Airborne Division...." At that point, she basically left us alone for the most part. I let her gabble because I was focusing on my son and wife... (sigh/ignore). So that being said, minus the hovering. (Please leave us a lone- I get the reason why, but we were mindful and range safe..) please let us enjoy our shooting.., we paid enough and having "shooting classes" was again, not asked for... The ranges are clean. Easy parking access, and the facility overall is nice, and does the job. The pro shop is nice, and the guys inside were very cordial.. I'd come back again, however, I don't need a full block of instructions multiple times while reloading.... We'll come to you and ask for help if need be ... maybe some pointers, and we paid $110 for 3 people (whole day) so we can get down to business and enjoy your outdoor facility. Time is limited, lots of uniformed down time in between live fire/ range hot times. Which is understandable.. but again, don't be giving us shooters blocks of instruction during range hot times. We've been to rifle ranges and fired over 30 times... we...get..it. So please, correct us when we do something wrong. Other than that, let us three be in our happy place... read more

Have gone to McMiller many times, usually with my spouse, but we probably won't be back because some (not all) "safety officers" rudely and condescendingly interject themselves into so many shooters (NON SAFETY RELATED) business. read more

I read several negative comments about the Range officers and customer interactions complaints. First , in a range officers eyes you are not a customer they don't care how rich you are how many years of shooting experience you have. They are there to make sure the range is safe for all at all times. They are not trying to be your friend they have one job to do keep the range safe and how you feel about it is not their concern. I'm a very experienced shooter on and off the range and I consider myself a safety nut. But I have been called out for thankfully only range rule violations not firearms violations and I deserved it. I unintentionally broke or was is the process of breaking a rule. I felt bad but also glad the Range Officers were on top of it. Make me feel safe that others are being watched so no injuries or worse happened. About complaints about shooting time due to target reset time when the range is shut down so shooters can take care of targets. Not shur where they have been shooting but this is normal and I have never been timed on the range if I buy an hour I try to keep it to a hour. They don't have you on a stop watch if you abuse running way over time then they may say something. Normally I buy all day pass. Then Im not rushed. Yes shooting here is pricey but just step back and look at the overhead that it takes to maintain a range like this the man power and other costs much less profit. If you don't like it buy land that law allows you to target shoot on. Good luck with that. read more

Amazing facility. Great Range Officers. Tip them well. A previous poster made mention of them being to strict. That sounds ridiculous where ever guns are out. They had a gunsmith on hand for my buddy and he got two rifles with optics mounted professionally and running right away that day, can't beat it. read more

This is one of those ranges you dream about. Great facilities, 25/50/100/300 yard ranges, trap, skeet, gun sales, gun rentals, ammo sales and merch. There's something different about shooting outside. Echoes of shotgun blasts echoing through the hills, small arms volleys from the short ranges, and the thump of long guns. This place is like a shooter's paradise. And even on the busiest of days, there's still a good chance that you'll have an open lane, ready to go. The purpose of my recommendation, however, is to thank the RSO of the 25yd range. There were two Steve's today, but retired Marine Steve is the one I want to call out. This exceptional gentleman was extremely knowledgeable and professional, and will be the sole reason for our multiple return visits. My fiancée has been shooting for a short time, but she's interested in correcting her form. She wants to take the steps to carry, she wants to learn. RSO Steve saw the error in her form, walked up to our lane and asked if he could assist. He went through left and right eye dominance with her, went through the basics of form, grip, target acquisition, and didn't condescend. He didn't make her feel out of place. He made her feel like she belonged. You go to some of these ranges that employ those gear head, gun-nut, Molon Labe 2A guys, that dress like they're operators when they've only seen Call of Duty. RSO Steve made our experience pleasant. He even went as far as showing her his personal 5.56 build, to give her a comparison. I run a 1-4x24 LPVO on my rifle, and he had a Sig Romeo, which she favored. Less time lining up the reticle and more time sending rounds down range. I've never had a complete stranger take so much of their time to actually "teach". He's extremely personable, with a ton to offer. If you make your way out to McMiller, make sure to stop by the 25yd range, and say hi to Steve. McMiller might be a diamond in the rough, hidden gem kind of range. But to be completely honest, RSO Steve is their hidden gem. In addition to this review, I placed a call to management to reiterate my admiration for this gentleman. These are the kinds of employees that don't just work, they live, they belong. If you're craving an outdoor range experience, look no further. McMiller is everything that you've been looking for. read more

Outstanding and friendly service. The RO was extremely helpful with my novice wife. Will 100% be back.

Very nice place and great customer service. My first time I had no idea what I was doing but the employees helped out as soon as we walked in the door! read more

Staff if very helpful. Range offer multiple shooting options for shooters of all skill levels. Will definitely go back. I very much enjoy their sporting clays range. Good time for the whole family. read more

I had a decent experience at their range but some issues need to be addressed with the attitudes of the staff. I for one did not appreciate the RSO's being strict with their safety requirements and yelling at customers when something so little as a minor safety concern arises. read more

I've been visiting them for about a decade and have always had friendly and informative encounters with the staff. A few years ago, I brought along another shooting enthusiast and we arrived to find the range was closed off due to a LEO event [Law Enforcement Only]. If only they had posted this on their website, it would've saved us hours of prep and driving. Sometimes the RO will hover over but they usually buzz off after they have seen that I have some idea of range safety and etiquette. Other than that, positive experiences. read more

Had a great time and the setting seemed relaxed. The employees were nice and so was rso. I will definitely be back.

Came here in the summer and I love it. The prices were super fair and the RO was friendly but freaked out with speed shooting (3 rounds a sec). The RO came and gave me some tips and that helped. He was like a bipolar grandpa, he cared about you but freaked out if I shot too fast and well. But yeah I would come back again read more

The most friendly and professional gun range I've been to. No bs, all welcoming smiles and advice. $22 to shoot all day at their 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 yd outdoor ranges. All officers are awesome and informative as well as pleasant. Definitely the go to range for rifles. (Can shoot anything here thats less than 50 bmg). read more

You can't beat this place. $20 bucks a DAY or $30 if you want to use the 300 yd. Your not going to get better rates than that. On Target and most others charge $20 PER HOUR! No WAY! I enjoy driving up from Crystal Lake also because it's a nice drive. They have sandwiches, pop, clean rest rooms and good staff. And you have to stop at International house of Wine and Cheese on the way home but thats another story. read more

25 yard RSO was being very offensive towards myself and my brother we were the only Latino men on the range who are always very safe and responsible in the multiple times shooting at this range and he would consistently yell overly check and hound us for no reason more than the other customers on the range I was trying to leave with all firearms cased unloaded chamber flagged and separated from the shooting area and he would yell at us for trying to move onto another part of the facilities area while allowing other people to go up to the bench and Manipulate there equipment without an issue we both felt segregated and offended the entire time it's a shame we spend the same amount of money and are more safe than most of the people there but are treated differently I'm a Marine infantry veteran was just trying to spend a day with my brother having fun and it was completely ruined by this man what a same read more

I'm very unhappy with the time I've spent here. After paying for an hour of range time I spent ten minutes actually shooting, most of the time the range attendants were talking even after being asked nicely to let me be. The attendant even said I wasn't doing anything wrong and still continued to hover, and still continued to give unwanted advice. I was called inexperienced because I look young by the owners. I won't be coming back and will find a place that I can shoot in peace like Deerfield! read more

Great place to spend the day shooting! Prices are reasonable, especially if you buy the all-day-all-range pass and spend the entire day at the range (comes out to like $4/hr). Be aware of the range rules and your surroundings and you won't have any issues. I wish they had a true steel range for standard caliber handguns and rifle grade steel - maybe someday. Can't wait to go back. read more

Yea it's ok for a last resort kind of place. There is only 2 Range officers that are halfway descent. You can tell the rest of them do not want to be there. There rude demeanor is old and nobody deserves to be talked to like they are there to start trouble. I have been going here for 2 years and 2 weeks ago was the 1st time I was ever told it was going to cost me another 14 dollars to plink. That's all my son and I came to do but instead paid 35+ dollars to be told we had to pay another 14 to use the plates. Not anywhere is it listed on the web page, nor at the front desk. RO was extremely rude going through safety rules although we have been there several times this year. Highly suggest somewhere else unless your expecting a highway robbery shoot Day. read more

A long way to go for outside shooting but generally good if you like to be outside. One problem? There's an extra charge per hour for using the long distance range. Don't like that and don't understand the rationale. read more

I have visited this range twice in the last year and both times have been excellent experiences. Staff is friendly, very knowledgeable, and willing to lend advice whenever possible. A big shout out and many thanks to Steve who helped figure out why my new rifle jammed a cartridge (operator error), I was able to continue my afternoon of sighting in my rifle before deer season as a result. Novice shooters and seasoned veterans should both feel comfortable at this range and I will highly recommend this location to family and friends. read more

Aug 2018 was our first visit. The club house was very nice with food drink and shooting supplies and the girl behind the counter was very friendly. Prices are extremely reasonable. The ranges were very well organized and very professional. 15 mins to shoot and then a break to go down range and change targets. I had a slight issue with my new AR and John the range master was able to see and fix what had happened to my rifle! Im looking foward to returning and also seeing the new updates they have planned for the ranges. I cannot over state how much I enjoyed shooting here read more

The place is great! Older RO's are the best. The younger ones are rude and a**holes.

Great range. Plenty of parking, friendly and helpful employees, i had a great time. The only problem i saw is the new pricing. i realize that there are several range areas and some can cost extra if added on. Please make a clear price sheet for the website and at the counter. I paid for the whole day 25 to 100 yards and was turned away from the plinking area because it was not included. while it sucks that now it costs extra, it would have been helpful knowing this ahead of heading to the range. perhaps this was why while there was a lot of people at the range, the plinking area was completely empty. read more

Saturday was my first time at McMiller and will NOT be my last.I dont get the negative comments about this place. SO you have to stop every 15 mins to Cease fire and change targets. That is not a big deal to me when I only paid a little more than $20 to be here ALL DAY. Place is great, staff was great and more than helpfull with any thing I needed.I will most definitely be making return trips back to this place. For the price it cant be beat.Im used to paying $20+ for an hour of indoor range time,so this place is everything Ive been looking for. read more

Place is great, cheap and RO's couldn't be nicer. No BS, no attitudes. Safety is their main concern which it should be. Certainly worth the drive from Lake County, IL. Shot trap, 50, 100 and 200 yard and 25 yard with pistols. For 22.00 all day, can't beat it. read more

The worst range I have ever been to hands down. The price for an hour of shooting is about $5 more than what it costs at nicer better run ranges for a day pass! Most of the time you shoot for about 10 minutes then wait for 15 minutes to shoot again. The "range safety officers" are a joke, they are more interested in acting like Nazi's and know-it-all's towards paying customers than letting people shoot. Even so, I was there recently and they now have a card system where you must bring a numbered card from your bench down range with you when you change targets because they had an incident where the RSO didn't notice someone was still down range until after the other shooters were told they could fire. So if you enjoy people breathing down your neck while you're shooting and you don't mind getting shot in the back while setting up your target, this is the range for you. read more

The facility is fantastic. However one particular 25 yard "Range Official" on duty was unpleasant. Very strange behavior. He seemed to manufacture issues where there were not issues, "advice" when you don't ask for it and a nit pick attitude that made us regret going there. We have been there many times before with zero issues and have been responsibility shooting all our lives however this official hovered over us acting more like a correctional officer instead of allowing us to enjoy a day with the family shooting. Get off the high horse! We appreciate they have an important job to do thats safety oriented with no room for errors but a business is its employees and it only takes one employee to destroy the business/ customer relationship no matter how nice the facility is. I recommend some additional people training for them from ownership/ management to avoid future customer experiences like ours. Personally we won't be back which is a shame because it's a nice facility. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. I was very excited about the opportunity to find a nearby outdoor range. I've been shooting handguns for years, but have two long guns that I never get to shoot because I can only find indoor ranges. Instead I left after only a few minutes after one person in our group broke their procedural rules. He did nothing unsafe... He had 3 guns on the bench instead of 2, took his gun out of the case while the case was off the bench, and walked to the shooting position with his firearm pointed toward the ground. Everything done here is common practice at any other range we have gone to, and perfectly safe. Granted, it was a violation of their rules, but none of the range officers pulled him aside to give him a rundown of their rules like they did with the rest of us in our group. Instead of pulling him aside to make sure he knew the proper procedures that they expect their customers to follow, three of their employees began belligerently screaming at the three of us. We repeatedly tried to explain that the one person was not aware of the rules, and we tried to de-escalate the situation. We repeatedly stated that since he now knew the rules he would follow them. But they continued to create an extremely hostile, and extremely tense situation. They took a procedural mistake made by one person, and turned it into an extremely hostile situation involving six people. McMiller staff creates a very unsafe environment. We all chose to leave because people should not be shooting firearms in that situation. These are the hot headed gun nuts that the liberal media wants the public to believe we all are. Fortunately, these instances are few and far between, but be safe and go somewhere where the employees are not completely insane. read more

I have been going to McMiller for well over 5 years. Yesterday I was shooting for three hours and was getting ready to leave during the live fire. I had a bolt action and lifted the rifle still over the yellow line at about a 45 degree angle to slide over the gun sock before inserting my Rem 700 into a transport case. During my last match they must have switched range officers and a younger range officer addresses me as "My Man" and then explains that I am not pointing my rifle in a safe direction even though it was pointed at down range and over the yellow line. His attitude was far from a friendly tone warning and more like a disciplinary action. I do fully understand range laws and respect the officers but just a friendly approach would have been appreciated. This is to bad because people like this could ruin a range's reputation. read more

STAFF IS VERY RUDE! I've been to probably all the public ranges in the Southern Wisconsin/ Northern Illinois area and this one is by far the worst. After only my second visit in two years I will not go there again. I thought the first time might have been a bad day but the second time around was even worse. My shooting buddy and I are both around 40 years old and have been around firearms our whole lives. Gun safety was instilled in us at a very young age. So being well versed in the do's and don'ts, we got by ok there. But everyone, including us, got looked down upon the entire time we were there. We witnessed the staff belittle multiple patrons for the slightest infractions. One guy just arriving, during a cease fire, set his cased rifle on his empty bench and before he could turn and walk away you here "get away from the bench". And the words "I hope we're not going to have any more problems" was overheard more than once. All the replies to the staff members were all "yes sir" and "no sir", no one at any time ever returned the rudeness. One poor guy on the 100 yard range got told that if he couldn't shoot any better than that he needed to go to the 25 yard range, as if he was getting put in time out. The guy ended up leaving. During one cease fire all the weapons were secure and everyone was away from the benches, two guys started walking toward their targets and the staff member yells "the range is not clear". The two guys walked the five steps back to where they were, waited about two seconds, and to no surprise "the range is now clear". Those are just some of the things I can remember off the top of my head. I understand that a gun range can be a dangerous place and the staff is there to keep everyone safe, but there was never a reason during our visit to be treating people as if they were complete idiots. The staff doesn't have to be all smiles and cater to your every need, but scolding grown men like they're little kids is unacceptable. In this day and age, gun ranges and gun owners tend to get a bad rap, and places like this is only going to fuel the fire. Someone at this facility needs to get a handle on things. I can't imagine how bad of an experience it would be for someone new to the sport that just wants to learn and to get better at shooting. They would probably leave there never wanting to shot again. "NOT RECOMMENDED" read more
