    Braised short rib

Fun place to sit, slow slow service, even on a slow Friday night when there seemed to be plenty of servers around to cover the tables. I'd only come here when staying at the hotel. It took an eon to get water - much later than when we ordered our drinks and revived them. We got cocktails to start - both of ours were pretty good, brandy based drinks. For dinner we shared a white flight and weren't really impressed - Oregon has a ton of great local wines and theirs did not make it to the top for me. For food, we got a side salad to share, the sausage pizza and their short ribs with mashed potatoes. Presentation wasn't great on the short ribs but the dish itself tasted good (though not really worth the price tag for the lackluster service). Pizza was alright - crisp on the bottom. As always, with McMenamins you're paying extra for the fun locations and quirky art work. The food and service don't deserve these prices, but when in staying at the hotel, it's convenient. One time is enough.

Happy hour. Get there at least 5:40pm or earlier. I was here at 5:50-ish and had to argue my way to happy hour prices, since happy hour ends at 6 and the waitress tried to tell me I had to order off the dinner menu. She asked for my drink order at 5:55pm then ran off before I could order food. She came back at 6:07 with my drink. I'd recommend the happy hour Ceasars salad, as it was worth $10, although i added prawns (they only put 4 prawns on the plate) for an additional $10 The cheesecake was superior to any other cheesecake I've ever tried! I ordered 2 different sangrias: the 2-rum based 3 rocks is much fruitier ( if not tropical) than the black rabbit sangria ( brandy based). I still think Mexican food restaurants do sangria best, but it "hit" me the way I wanted with 2 drinks. I love the view of trees and foliage near the windows in May. The other restaurant here, called Pat's Corner had better outdoor vistas, but it was a bit windy today so I opted to stay in at dusk. I had dappled sunlight coming in the windows.

One of the great things about McMenamins hotel locations is that you have a variety of locations where you can dine. We chose Ironwork Grill because, well, it was cold outside. Beer flight! Yum! I like that the location will allow you to choose different beers or you can go with a set list. They are kind about it and helpful, as well. We enjoyed our lunch and honestly, you can't go wrong with the tots. We always order cajun style, which is basically a cajun seasoning on their tots. It just adds a little kick to it. Tots and beer. Life is yummy! ... .. .. .. .

It could just be what we ordered; but the food was very rich tasting and probably not the healthiest but it was definitely hearty fare.

McMenamins is generally pretty solid when it comes to their menu items, and Ironwork Grill holds true to this axiom. After exploring the exhaustive and expansive grounds of the Grand Lodge, we popped in for a quick bite to eat, and were seated in the shaded patio, in the perfect September weather. My wife and I split the smaller of the two Hammerhead BBQ Chicken Pizzas and some Truffle Fries. We both agreed that there wasn't enough "truffle" seasoning in the fries, but they were still thick cut, stout and tasty, breaded and salted nicely, and the black garlic aioli is fan-freaking-tastic! Likewise, the Hammerhead BBQ Chicken pizza is an awesome amalgam of flavors, from the savory sweet BBQ sauce (which was the hidden star of the show, as it is the primary sauce and thus lies sequestered below the cheese layer), crisp hints of cilantro, and the spicy tang of the onions. Really great! We polished off our iced teas, shared our extra fries with the extremely brave and friendly squirrels scurrying around at our feet, then continued our explorations of the hotel and the surrounding grounds, as the sunset approached and the ambient lights began to twinkle to life. A pretty magical evening.

Had breakfast with my friend after spending the night on the property. Our waitress was a very friendly girl, who took our order quickly and properly then left us to chat while the order cooked. Our coffee was delicious, the cream was fresh, and when the food came to the table it looked great. My order of an Italian Sausage and white cheddar omlette with hash browns was delicious, but the hash browns were cold. We told the waitress and she set about to make that right. My friend had the country fried steak & eggs with creole gravy. His plate was decadent looking. He said it tasted amazing too.

A gem in a hidden spot amongst the Tualatin Valley. You can always expect the same. The tots with dipping sauce are a must. Coupled with a salad of choice. Those for an easy Thanksgiving, it was a breeze to reserve for my husband and I. Less than 1 minute to book a traditional turkey with all the fixings. Paired with seasonal pumpkin cheesecake, and the best old fashion. Stirred not shaken, and a pallet pleasing Pacific NW wine. Service was readily available. And carefully thought-out table placements, made this a joyous Thanksgiving.

If we could give you more that 5 stars we would. We ordered Christmas dinner and it was so very good I had to risk the wrath of my mom to tell her it was better than hers... she didn't believe me so she's not mad but I know the truth! Thank you so much for making us a wonderful delicious meal.

This place is not good and they are really expensive , service is good but food is horrible I'd never go back

The hashbrowns making a futile attempt to seek a source of warmth.

Greasy tots, over cooked steak on my salad, good service. The last two times eating here have been disappointing but this will be our last.

My usual M.O. with sake is a small, hot carafe when I have sushi. But my experience here has made me rethink this incredible beverage. I opted for the Daiginjo flight, which I highly recommend. Daiginjo is the best form of sake, with the process polishing down the rice grain to 50% or less of its original volume. The ones I had ranged from 40% to 50%. I'm not sure exactly what this does, but I can sure tell you, it makes a massive difference in the smoothness and taste. The first 3 sakes in the sampler are from Japan; the last is their exclusive sake made right in Forest Grove. Here's my take on the sakes I had: The Murai Family was aromatic and slightly floral. The Hakutsuru: smooth, slight fruitiness, subtle, with an interesting aftertaste on the back sides of my tongue. The Yoshi No Gawa was smoother with a slight tang at the back of my tongue. And last but not least, the in-house Nagata had a nice balance of bold, silky, and fruity/floral. I even admired its "legs" as I did a swirl to see viscosity. After the flight, I decided on a cocktail, the Blackberry Lime Martini. Tart, sweet, deliciousness. When I left, I bought a bottle of Sho-Une, which didn't break the bank, but is supposed to be great for the price point. I'm saving it for a special occasion. I'm looking forward to visiting this fine establishment again.

The owner's boyfriend, who is part of the team running the place,…read moreconfronted me and my 67-year-old mother in a way that was hostile, physically intrusive, and genuinely unsafe. We left shaken and have not been back. How does a man who has never spoken to you, never met your dog, and knows nothing about your life already hate you -- and need you to know it? That is the question I am still trying to answer about this person. I had felt his eyes on me from across the room before either encounter, like he was waiting to be released. When he finally was, he came over not to talk but to deliver two messages at once: how impressive he was, and how little he thought of me. It happened on two consecutive days. The first day was brief. I complimented his dog and wondered aloud if my newly adopted rescue might share some of that breed. He answered with contempt: "Absolutely not. Your dog is nothing but a pure pit bull." He had never met or been near my dog. I let it go. The next day, his roughly 100-pound dog was growling, snarling, and baring its teeth at me and my mother from a few feet away. We had not interacted with the dog or said a word about it. Then he stood up, walked over, blocked our path to the door, stopped a foot from my face, and held a pointed finger about three inches from my eye. He kept it there while he told me my dog was violent, every dog in the brewery was terrified of him, I had never trained him, I did not understand responsibility, and he was no longer welcome. He delivered all of this in the same breath as a running commentary on how exceptional his own dog was. I'm no psychologist, but the shape of it was hard to miss. He was condemning my dog for behavior his own dog was actually doing. He was condemning me for reasons I still cannot name. And he needed me, in the same breath, to know how superior his dog was to mine. Hatred without cause, accusation by projection, and a need to elevate himself over a stranger. It was schoolyard bullying with adult body language and an owner's authority behind it. None of it was true. My dog is a three-day-old rescue still learning that the world is safe. He is not aggressive. He has never in his life attacked another dog. He comes from trauma and is finally somewhere he is loved. At Root and Rye there was no incident -- no bad behavior, nothing close to violent. Dogs frolicked. They respected each other's space. They were warm to him. All afternoon the manager on duty came by our table to pet him, ask about him, and show real interest. Families came over to say hello. Four children crouched down to let him kiss their faces. No dog had a problem with him. No person had a problem with him. The owner's boyfriend was the only one in the room with a problem -- and the problem was not us. His natural tendency appears to be to find a target and terrorize them with insults and abuse. We were simply the ones in front of him that day. My mother later told me that was the moment she felt unsafe. I did not know what he was going to do next. We left and did not come back. The question that stayed with us after we left was not whether he was rude or unprofessional. It was whether he was dangerous, and if so, in what way. I still do not know the answer. This is otherwise a nice place. That is why this matters. Someone connected to ownership is using that position to walk up to people he does not know and unload contempt he could not possibly have earned. The owner's boyfriend gives Root and Rye an unhealthy, dark, creepy vibe that is completely unnecessary to a brewery this otherwise lovely. To the owner, if you are reading this -- you can do better, sister. Until this is addressed, I cannot recommend going, particularly with a dog, and particularly with anyone you would not want cornered by an angry stranger with a finger in their face.

He enjoys playing dj with his curated music, which also had merit, but again was too loud for a weekday lunch. I'm not an old fart, (I think he and I were close to the same age) but old enough to have lost some hearing in my youth, and it was still a bit loud. The pork rinds were good, surprisingly generous and tasted very fresh. I liked the Tajin on them, but would have preferred it to be an option (shaker on the table) rather than just full coverage. I would have shared them, but the person I was dining with doesn't care do the spice. I ordered the bbq bacon cheeseburger with the sauce on the side and it was a generous portion, that was well-cooked. Just the way I ordered it! That being said, the beef was relatively tasteless and the whole sandwich was extremely greasy. The bacon on the sandwich was plentiful and not as greasy as the burger and cheese. I don't know the fries would be seasoned. It may or may not have been on the menu, I honestly can't recall. The place seemed well kept and customer oriented, food service wise, but the ambiance could be dialed down for the lunch crowd. If there was an alternate burger available nearby, I might not give Brothers a second chance. But I can't hate on it. Just a few too many flaws for the price, which was not cheap. Paying over $5 for a Mexican Coke was pretty steep since I didn't see any fountain options. But lastly, too be fair, the bartender was VERY kind!
