Two stars: did not meet expectations I will start with the good. The building is beautiful. Every floor is decorated differently, giving you a unique experience with each floor/bar. Because of this, it is a fun place to go out with friends. The staff were friendly. They did take a while to serve us, but they were busy that night. Now for the food. I had gone here previously (I forgot to post a review) with coworkers, and the food wasn't bad. I got a sandwich, and it was quite good. I cannot say the same thing this time around. I got the Aztec salad for dinner ($18.25 base price). I added chicken, which added $5.75. First, the salad itself was rather small. It felt more like an appetizer than an entrée. Relatedly, the amount of chicken I got with the salad was minimal considering I almost paid $6 for it to be added. But overall, the salad was a weak attempt at a taco or southwestern salad. It was visually unappealing and had an okay flavor. Salads might not be this restaurant's strong suit because someone in our group got the blackened salmon Caesar salad, and they also thought it was mediocre. I would go again if a group of friends/coworkers were going, but I would not go out of my way to eat here again. And if I did, I would certainly not get a salad.
We stayed four nights at this amazing and unique hotel and enjoyed the art, architecture, and history. It's a tourist attraction just by itself. Clean, comfortable, and romantic, but our 6th floor water view room lacked a microwave and refrigerator. Ice is available from the friendly folks at the 24-hour front desk, but there's no machines. Parking is challenging and there's a 30-minute loading zone in front, but after 6pm on Saturday anyone can park there all the way through Monday morning (and they did just that) so hauling in luggage from 2 blocks away was a buzzkill. How about getting those artists to paint the curb yellow and make it a 15-minute loading zone 7 days a week? But once you're checked-in, the place is like Disneyland for adults. Dazzling chandeliers and stunning art and more local history than a museum. They got us hooked: we both bought passports and will be tripstering our way through the rest of the McMenamins properties. And next time we're in Tacoma we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else!
Super unique and eclectic hotel from the lobby to the restaurants and rooms. We stayed just one night on our way through town so didn't get to experience all they have to offer but what we did experience was great! The room was very clean, not a speck of dust anywhere, the bed was comfy and the space was nicely decorated. The front desk check in was quick and simple and the gal checking us in was very friendly. All the basic expectations were met, some exceeded, so when you add the 5 bars to the list of amenities you definitely have a 5 star experience! We were on the noisy road side of the hotel so the morning rush hour was a good alarm clock to get up and get ready for the day! Next time we'll request a room on the other side, we won't get the stunning view but might be able to sleep in a bit!
Even the bathrooms are cool! What a surprise! Usually, when driving to Seattle, Bellingham, the San Juan's, Lummi Island or any place in Washington, I throw a prayer up to the gods, and I try to get past the traffic jam that's always around Tacoma, as best I can. Because of that, I've never even been to Tacoma. But this time I decided to visit the McMenimans' Elks Temple. Wow! I have been to four McMenamins, and this one is definitely unique. Super cool, super fun! From the moment I stepped inside I knew this was going to be a wild experience. Four bars, one restaurant, food served at three of the bars. I don't usually eat this much these days, but I had to try stuff at every bar. Staff is totally on board with making your experience, fun and enjoyable. I think my favorites are definitely The Old Hangout and The Vault. If you come on a Friday or Saturday night, get here early because the places get packed. But during the rest of the week, from what I hear, it's more doable. I got a room on the sixth floor with a small little balcony overlooking the water, and every room seems to be slightly different in theme and style. But the foyer area of the sixth floor is amazing, and you can see it from the seventh floor as well. Bria was my server at The Old Hangout, Zack was the bartender at The Vault, and Evan was my bartender at the Spanish Bar. All of them were excellent. While I was The Old Hangout, I had the eggrolls with my drink, vodka, pineapple juice, splash of sprite, squeeze of lime.. I couldn't eat the whole thing there were so many egg rolls. Next time I'll try the coconut shrimp. At The Vault I had the SPRING FLING | $17 High Council brandy, Vodka, Lemon, vanilla simple, strawberry , matcha powder, clarified milk --sweet and bright. It was really good. Possibly a new favorite. At the Spanish Bar, I had a Spanish coffee. Perfect. I checked out the Spanish ballroom, their music venue, which is a very cool, large space, has its own bar. For dinner, I was craving fish and chips, so I opted for the Pub on the main level. My server was Brianna. Very nice and attentive. There are seven levels, and I think three or four staircases, so lots of places to explore. It took me about an hour and a half to finally figure out where the secret Vault bar room is. (SORRY, CANT TELL YOU LOCATION. IT WILL SPOIL THE FUN.) It's a tiny little place, but a very cool vibe... Kind of like an old-fashioned speakeasy. So get there early because it fills up fast! Elks Temple may have become my new favorite, and I will definitely stop back in Tacoma, despite all the traffic, next time around. Even if you don't stay here, you need to check out the Elks Temple for good drinks and a fun experience. SPECIAL NOTE: it seems that there are a lot of reviews with low stars, that I read through, and I noticed that the majority of negative comments were about the food. And I have to say that while my experience this time was really good, I must agree that sometimes at any McMenamins, the food is a hit or miss. So they may want to think about revamping the food, cause, even though I had a good experience this time, it's true. I have had several lackluster experiences.

Mcmenamins never disappoint. First time to this location. Went on a Friday night for a self guided Tiki bar hop. This one was a fun stop. The place is huge . A large number of tables and seats at the bar. There is a little waterfall that you can sit by. It is decorate in the tiki style you'd expect. It was a busy night but the service was great. Food and drinks came out reasonably fast and were very good. The cocktails are fun, colorful and delicious. Part of the fun of any Mcmemamins are the different levels/floors with restaurants and bars of different styles. Elks Temple has 7 floors. There is the pub, tiki bar, Spanish restaurant/bar , Docs's, game room. There is a ballroom that hosts different events as well. There temple is decorated beautifully. I did not stay so didn't see a hotel room but they are usually very unique and quite fun. Can't wait to visit again.
Okay so this place was AMAZING!! I didn't know that "Tacompton" had such an awesome hotel! 7 floors of adventures. The decor and furniture was stunning. There's like a restaurant/bar on pretty much every floor. So much to explore and so many things to do! Apparently there's a secret bar that you can go find. They give you a cool little map. It's just awesome! Everyone there was so nice. The best thing about it all is that the venue is on the second floor. So if you were going to a show (like I did), you can just head back up to your room and not have to drive hours back home. I definitely want to come back to this place and I definitely want more bands to play here!! Also there's a paid parking lot next to the hotel. Love this place!!
We got lucky and was able to park out front. My wife wanted to start her day here for her birthday. What a treat! We were greeted as soon as we walked in. It was open seating so we sat right by the fireplace. Very artsy and romantic on the inside. Our sever was Andre. He was very sweet. I ordered eggs Benedict (the one with salmon) and my wife had the grit city grits. I could be butchering the names. She is a super picky eater and absolutely loved her food. We also had stuffed hash browns, spiked coffee, and mimosas. She's been wanting to try this place for a while and I'm so happy it did not disappoint. I can't believe we waited this long to try it. I loved my food as well if I didn't mention it. Definitely recommended.
Really enjoyed the elks temple. The food is always delicious and service is fast! So much to see and enjoy. I was bummed that the expedition elk burger was over cooked the last 2 times we went. Otherwise it's a fan fav!
I love you this location and all of them. The things it has to offer! Sometimes the dining situation is a bit strange (timing, location seated and timing of when the check comes) but I cannot say and have good things about z pretzels and cheese!!! I do wish they had more non alcoholic beverage choices!
After a mayoral forum and some wine tasting a friend and I wandered into our neighborhood McMenamins and took a table in the Spanish Bar with a nice view of the Spanish Steps... We had a drink and the Jojos bravas and Orange Chile Olives. The Jos were crisp and beautifully seasoned with a nice spice and tender centers. They didn't need the black garlic aioli but it was very creamy and savory. The luscious green olives marinated in quality olive oil burst when bitten! Then the fresh orange taste hit and... the peppery finish of bright, hot chile! Almost too spicy but nicely quenched with sip of kolch or crisp white wine. The funky decor is clever and suits both the vintage Tacoma architecture and the McMenamins flavor of fun and irreverence.
We love coming to McMenamins, it's so fun. We have been here a few times during the day and once at night. We found the maze of it all fun, as well as the secret stuff. We ate once at the tiki area and the next time in the main level restaurant.
We came here to eat at the Tiki Bar, which is on the ground floor, I think!! Located in Downtown Tacoma, McMenamins Elks Temple is a very big building with multiple floors, each floor offers something different. The top floor is where the hotel rooms are, there is also a hidden bar here with a secret door. A very popular place, every floor was filled with people, lots of bars, pool tables, just lots going on here! The food was very good, the Tiki Bar felt more like a lounge than a bar to me!! We had a good time here!!
This review is for McMenamins Pub at the Elks Temple. Looking for breakfast, we decided the Pub at McMenamins Elks Temple was the place to go, not only for some good food but also to get my McMenamins Passport stamped. Since the Pub was the only place open at the time of day we were there, only one stamp was to be had... but the delicious breakfast made up for it! I had a half order of the Fungi Benedict which was made with half a toasted English muffin & one scrambled egg, covered with herbed wild mushrooms, sautéed spinach and Hollandaise sauce. Several choices are available for sides and I chose the fresh fruit (fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and more). It was very tasty and perfectly done. We sat by a window inside, since the outside seating areas were still closed, but the beautiful sunny day made for a perfect venue for breakfast. Our server was attentive, quick to refill water, and made sure to check back in with us regularly. I enjoyed this McMenamins location a lot. I think I'll have to go back to get the rest of my Passport stamps and to sit in one of those outside seating areas that overlook the harbor. I feel another road trip coming on. read more

I reserved a room at McMenamins Elks Temple since we were attending an event nearby. We also participate in the McMenamins passport program. I did receive an email detailing where to park. I didn't really read it very closely, and let me tell you it was stressful finding parking near the hotel! All the spots near the hotel were taken and we drove up and down the streets looking for parking. At first, we were going to park down a ways, in a neighborhood. But it seemed too far to lug our luggage. So one more try..and someone just vacated a spot close to the hotel in one of those spots that is back in parking only. Okay, for me that is stressful trying to back into a spot with traffic coming towards me! Finally, I was parked and told that my vehicle should be fine during our stay. We arrived 2 hours early. I got in line behind a couple, they were given a room. When it was my turn, my room wasn't yet available. No problem. They stowed our luggage, they had my phone number to text when my room became available. We went to the restaurant to eat lunch and start getting our passports stamped. It was typical McMenamins food. We went to other bars to get stamps, and we got to one of the bars right before 2 and was told that if we went down to the Spanish ballroom, there was a tour starting at 2 that we could get the stamp without buying a ticket. How very fortunate! The ballroom is beautiful! Shortly after that, we had all our stamps. We went to sit in the lobby to wait for our room to become available. One of the front desk clerks came to ask our name to check our room. She did not come back. Next thing I know, the check in rush arrived! Everyone got their rooms! Finally, I just got up and got in line and was given a room. The room was nice. Wished there was a fridge and microwave. Never turned the TV on. We were on the 7th floor and had a cool view of the atrium on the 6th floor. There's coffee on the 6th floor in the morning. Also, in the lobby. It's a fun place to visit. But we paid over $300 for one night. $275 plus taxes and fees. I would never stay here again based on my parking experience alone. read more

Really loved visiting this McMenamins. We took the ghost tour and had some time to kill before. First we stopped at the main entrance restaurant. Their Cajun tots were pretty good, as was their mocktails. Our waitress was wonderful and super friendly. After that we wondered around and searched for the speak easy, it was actually way easy to find. Special shout out to the young man who made our drinks. He was really excited to be creative and make us mocktails. I only wish I had thought to ask him how to make it again, so I could come back and order it... It has egg whites and I think ginger....very yummy! There were two very big downsides, which is why this only got three stars for me, first, we circled for an hour looking for parking, that was not fun. They should have better parking as much as they spent on the building. The second is their prices... Two mocktails and Cajun Tots were as expensive as a full meal and drinks else where. At those prices it should be steak and lobster, not burgers and pizza. That's just my opinion. I would go again for a special occasion, but I would also make sure I could afford to take out a mortgage to do so. read more

I have never stayed a night here but I've had the food and been to some of the floors. And I can say it's awesome. Food is great. The vibes are great and I love how each floor has different drinks and food as well. Will definitely be going back! read more

McMenamins is primarily in Oregon, but this is a great expansion of the franchise. The temple is massive and one of the best options for a night out in Tacoma, although it does close early. There is a secret bar here, but my favorite bar is the tiki bar! It's an amazing atmosphere with delicious cocktails. Every bar offers something unique and different and their beers/ciders are also amazing. I'd highly recommend the Cajun tater tots if you're looking for food! read more

Such a great restaurant inside very interesting history hotel. Food was great. Shan represent very good customer service to our table. Drinks was little sour, and margarita have a lots of line. Definitely recommended visit that place found hiding bar and get a beer. There will be challenge with the parking overall Staff is very friendly hotel clean restaurant clean. read more

We usually love McMenamins properties but this one did not hit the mark. We came for dinner while in town visiting a friend. The service was terrible. We waited forever for our food and when it finally came most of it was wrong. It's a cool vibe and we enjoyed walking around but didn't stay long because of the dinner experience. read more
My partner and I went to McMenamin's Spanish Ballroom to see Anthem (a Rush tribute band). We decided to have dinner there before the show. Toni helped us and they were the best waitstaff I've met in a long time. It was very, very busy, and Toni made me feel like I was their complete focus any time they talked to me. They dealt with some of my weird questions and needs. I have an autoimmune disease that affects taste as well as what my mouth can handle (no citrus, no heat/capsaicin, and sometimes I cannot taste things at all). Toni was patient and kind, grabbed us the extras we needed without seeming bothered or rushed. Stellar service. Pic of us in case Toni gets to see it. Thank you, Toni!!! read more

We came to the tiki bar on Saturday at 6:30 PM and had such a wonderful time that we ended up getting McMenamin's passports so we could experience more! I loved the decor and low lighting of the tiki bar. While it was busy, it wasn't too loud. Our seats were comfortable and we liked our waiter. While we were here, I ordered the El Diablo cocktail. This drink is spicy and peppery, and came with bell pepper ears. :) this was a fun cocktail! We split a plate of Tokyo tots which were savory and delicious. Normally I don't prefer wasabi but it worked really well with the pork belly and teriyaki strips that were in this basket. We can't wait to come back! read more

I am in awe of the ambiance of what McMenamins has done when they remodeled the Elks Lodge of Tacoma. Not enough pictures to show how grand/fun/funky they did to bring the old Elks Lodge back to life. The staff was excellent in service and fun to chat with. You need to make a reservation if you want a booth or table looking out over Tacom Waterway. We sat at the Pub bar which was fun talking to the staff there. The drinks were good, and we ordered soft pretzels with cheese/ale fondue for a snack as I wanted the prime rib and had to wait until 5 to order it. The prime rib was worth the wait. Best I have had in a year. I ordered the lemon/ strawberry cake as a take-home. Too full to enjoy it there. I wish U would have known about their Mother's Day bunch (it was sold out). Next year. Loved our stay here! Fun concert, bar/restaurant and interesting art. They do a wonderful job of keeping things flowing. Staff was friendly, but while waiting for our table felt a little like we were interrupting the hostess from being on her phone. Restaurant was on par, enjoyed cappuccino and biscuit gravy breakfast breakfast by the window where we had a beautiful view of the city. You will love their biscuit and gravy if that is your jam! Chicken and waffles can use some work though. Chicken was overcooked, hard and dry on the edges. Waffles were yummy! read more

A friend had told me about Cajun tater tots at this place, so I had to try them out. I was around this place in Tacoma, so went in. My first impressions about the ambiance is that I felt like I walked into an European bar. It's classy and cozy. The staff are very welcoming. I just got the tots and they are great, I would like some more seasoning though. The menu looked good. I am not a drinker but will definitely be back to try out the food and for the ambiance. read more

This place is just gorgeous. I love all the little bars and how there's many different schemes and it's a lot of fun to explore. I had shrimp and grits for breakfast and the portion was huge. it was great. I find the indoor rooms odd with the windows facing the hallway. Lucky for us we booked a room facing the Spanish steps. I recommend exploring here and staying here. read more

5 stars easy. Delicious food. Amazing atmosphere. Top notch service. Beautiful art and furniture. Bathrooms are beyond clean, even they are artsy! Several interesting bars to visit. Super clean beautiful rooms as well. We absolutely love this place. Ask about the passport for mcmenamins, they make the experience even more fun! Parking can be tricky unless you're lucky enough to get one right out front. Then again, I was impressed by the local police patrols and security around paid parking lots nearby. The entire experience of visiting elks temple could land 6 stars imho.i genuinely get excited to visit each time we go. read more

The McMenamins! Apparently it is a Pacific North-West thing is what I was told. The one we went to in Tacoma is the McMenamins Elks Temple. This place has 4 flours of different bar/restaurant and the rest of the floors are rooms (you can get lodging here too). I've never heard of "McMenamins" so glad someone introduced me to the place. Other floors include The Old Hangout, The Spanish Bar, and The Tasting Room. There is also a gift shop in the building. This is such a fun place to hang out in with your adult friends. You can chose which floors to go or visit every floor like our group did. The place is historic, it's absolutely beautiful and they have good drinks :). For food we went to the Spanish Bar and tried their tapas. The presentation was nice and tapas were good! I really love their sauces! The staff were all friendly and all smiles. I recommend this place and I'd come back again! I wish I can post all videos and pictures I took. The views by the way are also beautiful. read more

If you are staying at McMenamins, they should direct you. Otherwise check out the lot at 617 Pacific Avenue. Nearby pay lot but convenient. Park there AFTER unloading your luggage, tho!

The main pub on the 4th floor that has their entrance on Broadway is open for breakfast, they open at 7am. Reservation are always good to get if its available.
