I found him when I went to pick him up. They claimed they would be investigating the incident, but then never followed up. They never formally documented this via incident report for my signature. Had I not shown up when I did, I don't know if they would have informed me of this incident. 2) December 2022: My son was exposed to sexually inappropriate behavior from an older student enrolled at KinderCare. The staff apologized and said that they would "setup a program that talks about keeping hands to yourself". Again, this was never formally documented via incident report for my signature. Had my son not told me this happened, I would not have known. 3) December 2022: My daughter has a life-threatening food allergy to sesame, and I provided the center with epinephrine, Benedryl, and specific instructions provided by her allergist. On her last day, I asked to have these items back, to which they responded that there "must have been a loss of communication" because the items expired in October (it's now December) and thrown out. I was never notified, which means that my daughter has been attending school for 2+ months without access to life-saving medication. Not only is this absolutely negligent, THIS IS ILLEGAL (look up Elijah's Law in Virginia). To say that I am furious is an understatement, and I hope that NO ONE'S child ever suffers because their system for keeping medication properly stored is severely flawed. If you have children enrolled here that need access to medication, go ahead and ask them to show you where it's stored and see if it's accessible. It's likely that they threw it away and never told you, and your child is in danger. My top priority is always and WILL always be the safety of my children. The above incidents are not a result of "accidents" that happen due to watching toddlers. These are preventable safety issues that could be avoided if the staff here properly cared for these children. If your children aren't enrolled here and you're exploring options, look somewhere else.

We have had our kids being offered candy by staff, which we have requested to stop, but somehow keeps continuing, my toddler is often found crying at the end of the day, clinging on to a teacher, who is too busy sweeping up the floor so they can leave early, they have never hired cleaners, the place smells of mould and our toddler is constantly sick. My toddler on two occasions has been found eating asphalt from their broken toddler playground, whilst their teachers are sat in a corner on their phones, chatting, yet management does nothing, we have requested she doesn't play there anymore, but why are they even letting toddlers play in an unsafe area, and not being properly monitored. Our toddler on multiple occasions has come home with severe diaper rash, so we make it a point to check her diaper before we leave and staff even argue amongst themselves as to who should change the diaper, after you tell them she has a soiled diaper. We have also found the toddler teacher completely left the room to go to the outside playground to take a call leaving at least 6 toddlers in the classroom unattended for at least 10min, while I came to drop off my toddler, this was brought to management, they did nothing. Their ac stopped working a few weeks ago in my child's classroom and they did not make it a priority to get it fixed, in this hot weather even though it was brought to their attention several times, they have also had issues with billing being incorrect too. The list goes on. This place needs a deep clean, equipment needs upgrading and bottom line management needs to be changed.

Many of the staff over the years showed a true passion for taking care of children. There's a significant amount of turnover, especially at the Assistant Director spot. Many of our favorite teachers have moved on (which is good for them) and have been replaced by some good and some not so good teachers. We signed up for the weekly Phonics Program and there was a significant lack of communication between the Phonics instructor and parents regarding what is being covered on a week to week basis. We also encountered many billing issues during the first year of our tenure. The final straw came when the Director advised us they would stop bussing to/from my daughter's elementary school. This had been a service offered for many years but was discontinued due to 'logistical" reasons. Her recommendation was that I transfer to Oakton KinderCare which is not convenient for us, costs more, and has some questionable online reviews. For the amount of money that I paid over the years, I would have expected to have been treated better than this. If you select this daycare, just know when push comes to shove that the almighty dollar comes first, not your child!

My kids have always loved the outdoor spaces as well - even when they were in-between playgrounds. The staff is incredibly loving and positive. They contact us whenever there is any issue, but when they have had to deal with things that could have been frustrating (potty training accidents, unexpected illness) they have never made me feel bad or embarrassed. One other aspect of Rise and Shine that we love is that our boys have had the opportunity to learn from teachers from other countries and some who speak different languages. Researching a "good" daycare is hard. There aren't a whole lot of reviews posted. At the end of…read morethe day, you'll need to visit them and go with your gut even though you might get glowing recommendations from acquaintances, friends, family....and a total stranger, like me. I'll share my experience. I knew I had hit the jackpot when my kids were saying things like: "Why did you come so early to pick me up?", "Can you come back later", "Can you wait?", "Can you pick up my brother instead, then come back for me?", "But mom.....I just got to playscape...and I want to play!" We have been part of the TGS family for the last 7.5 years since both kids went there. The school opened in Oct 2014, and we enrolled our then 3-mo old in May 2015. (The 2nd one went in at 8 weeks old!) It was not our first choice because it was so new, and there weren't many reviews posted, so we went with an established daycare provider close to 28 and 50. It did not go well at that location, and luckily, TGS had an opening. We enrolled and it has been very good for my family. It made me realize what was important in choosing a daycare: 1. Responsiveness of school administration. I've never needed to leave a voicemail, and emails were responded to within a couple of hours. 2. Teacher turnover. While turnover is expected, there are some teachers still there who were present before we enrolled! 3. Being accommodating for unique needs. Nebulization? Sure. Wiping down cranial band at intervals? No problem. Use gluten-free bread on grilled cheese day for my son? Of course! I felt comfortable asking for these things because I felt like we were on the same team. 4. Teacher-Parent communication. Teachers were honest in letting me know how the kids were doing. This could be anything from behavior issues, to asking for advanced workbooks to be sent in because my kids were bright enough to handle it. Also, they were pretty good about sending updates and photos so I had a good idea what was going during the day. 5. Opportunities to move. Kids have a TON of energy. A huge sell was the playscape. It's raining/freezing out. No big deal, they go to the playscape! They do dance parties, yoga, musical chairs and other movement-centric activities in the classroom, but nothing burns energy like running around for free play. 6. Preparedness for kindergarten/public school. The transition to public school has been much easier due to the routines they followed at TGS. They were also confident since they were familiar with what they were learning during the school day. They learned a lot at TGS through brief, instructive periods, free play (building/STEAM-type toys, books, costumes, toy kitchen, etc.), and art and got far ahead academically without having to sit all day like they do in public school. The kids were able to read on their own (e.g., Dr. Seuss) toward the end of pre-K. 7. Enjoyment. Do the kids look happy? Are they having fun? Do they go in willingly, or put the brakes on? Are they talking about things that they did at school and their friends? Are they proud of their art/creations/worksheets? YUP. 8. Facilities. Safe? Secure? Clean and well maintained? Yes to all. Also, toys and books get replaced. I've seen toys *actually* get cleaned too, since kids can be pretty gross and germy. 9. Coverage. The hours of operation, coverage on some holidays and inclement weather modifications (e.g., delayed start, early dismissal) met our needs. Also, summertime coverage ("Camp Gardner") was always a special time for my kids and they always looked forward to the special visitors, events and treats woven into the schedule. There are some negative reviews here. I skimmed through them and noticed they were all from 2016. Administration and staff changed that year. That's when Sara Shoulers came onboard. She runs a tight ship, and reviews post 2016 are positive. There are also 8 reviews that are not recommended, BUT they are all positive (?!). I wish I had chosen TGS first - but I didn't because it didn't have many reviews, and the other daycare was recommended to me by a trusted friend. Well- she had a good experience there, and I did not. Either way, set up an appointment to tour the school, then go with your gut. Our time at TGS lifted a lot of stress and anxiety off my plate since I knew my kids were well cared for. I felt good about dropping them off every morning.

I absolutely love this school. My almost two year old was at a different school for about 4 months…read morewhile I waited to get off the waitlist at the Gardner School. At the other school my child was sick a lot, the staff did not communicate when there were known cases of sickness amongst the children and they did 0 crafts in 4 months. The Gardner School has been a complete 180. I have seen the staff cleaning after the children eat, play, etc. The management staff is phenomenal when it comes to communication. I love the way the staff interacts with the children. They do a craft every day, and I get pictures throughout the day! It's already hard enough having to leave my child to go to work, but I always know what is going on through regular updates in the app. If they are low on diapers, wipes, or need additional spare clothes, it is communicated through the app. The best part, in 6 months, my child has not been sick once. I cannot say enough good things about the Gardner School. I'm especially thankful because they make leaving my child to go to work a little bit easier because I know she will be taken care of.

I remember first walking into the school and taking the tour appreciating its beautiful building, playground and classes. During our tour, an older kid walked into the office and gave a hug to one of the directors. It was such a great sign. Not only that kid loved the school, teachers but also directors in the front office. Since 2017, Goddard school in Herndon has been a part of our life. My older one graduated from Goddard school in 2022. She always had amazing teachers around her who not only cared for her but also loved her. Even today when we go to pick up our younger daughter, our older daughter still hugs those teachers (many of them are still here which is so unique for the school). I should mention my daughter had Ms. Padmini as a teacher who is a Computer Engineer turned to educator. One morning, when I was dropping my daughter off, I heard Ms. Padmini teaching signs using alpha, beta, delta. Now, Ms. Padmini designs the curriculum for the entire school. The kids are in great hands with her. They are truly getting STEAM focused education. Ms. Marilynn has been a caring, energetic and wonderful administrator. Last winter, one evening my car just would not start because of battery issues. Ms. Marilynn stayed with us until my husband arrived to make sure we were okay. I don't know a whole lot of people who would do this but having her in this school has given me comfort that my daughters are in a caring place. Ms. Abha has been excellent owner of this school. As a former preschool teacher herself, she brings a wealth of experience. She has brought very practical changes/enhancements to the school. It is no wonder that school gets voted to be the one of the best schools in this area. I would highly recommend this school. When my daughter had a difficult time transitioning to her new 2 year old classroom, it felt as if every teacher in the building was aware and working to help her through the emotional journey - teachers from other classrooms stopping me in the hallway to ask how she's been doing. For me, it is a difficult decision to not be the primary caretaker for my daughter. The Goddard School of Herndon team understands that and seems to me that they operate knowing they are taking care of the most important thing to me - my kid.
