Primrose School of Chantilly - Infant classroom

Primrose School of Chantilly

He started in the infant room at 3 months old, and has grown up with almost all of his classmates from infancy through toddlerhood! It has been amazing to watch his class grow together. At the beginning, I was nervous about heading back to work after my maternity leave ended and leaving such a young baby in the care of other people for 7-8 hrs a day. By the end of his first week at PSOC, I felt so much better and my guilt had subsided! The staff and his teachers empathized and were there to talk me through any questions or concerns I had. They made it such a smooth transition, and I felt confident leaving him in their care. Over two years later, I've consistently had great interactions with the leadership team, staff, and teachers. They adore my son, and the most important thing of all is my son LOVES to be at PSOC! He is happy and continues to learn at an astounding pace, always coming home with new phrases and words he learned at school, or art projects he completed with the teachers. COVID-19 has been challenging for all of us, but PSOC has went above and beyond during this difficult time. They have been communicative, transparent, and followed safety protocols. That's all we can really ask for, and I've been impressed by the way they have handled the pandemic. We'll unfortunately be moving to California this summer of 2021, and I'm already starting to look for new preschools for my son. It's been so hard to find somewhere as great as PSOC - we will miss them dearly! Between their flexible operating hours for those of us with longer work days, amazing staff, school-provided lunches, great curriculum, and clean facility and playground, it'll be hard to find something comparable.

Beneath Ken Nysmith's slick salesmanship and the forced smiles that greet you, lies a far more sinister reality that belies the promise of "joy-filled, personalized learning". If you're seeking a school that truly nurtures your child's heart and mind, look elsewhere! Wellbeing and emotional support are woefully neglected at Nysmith. This place sees no problem in breaking spirits, crushing individuality and forcing students into a rigid mold that stifles their unique potential and confines them to narrow expectations. Question the status quo, and you'll be met with contempt. Conformity is the sole currency valued here! Think The Bible, Torah, or Quran -- immutable and infallible. . . I have met a few great teachers but admin pressure seems to leave them little bandwidth to connect, coach, or inspire students (despite the low student-to-teacher ratios). Humans are wired to thrive in safe, supportive spaces where even mistakes become stepping stones to learning. Nysmith is NOT that space. You've been warned!

We moved 600 miles to attend and it is absolutely one of the best decisions we've ever made. Our son didn't fit the mold in other schools, but he's eager to attend Nysmith every day because he is loved and filled with joy. He finally feels the freedom to be himself at school!

Val has taken over and totally revamped the daycare center that for many years was named The Kay School. We interviewed at The Kay School before Covid-19 shut everything down and were impressed by the facility, which is large enough for four classrooms (although Rising Stars only has three class rooms open as of now) but not so big that it felt impersonal. The building is actually an old barn that has been retrofitted as a school, which creates a charming/welcoming environment for the kids. There is a great playground area in the back with a pavilion, multiple swing sets, raised stage and blacktop. We met Val when we re-interviewed in the Summer of 2022 and were very impressed by what she was doing with the facility and curriculum under her new ownership/management. Val has run her own in-home daycare for several years and has a loyal following of families who followed her over to Rising Stars which was telling for us since she was previously in Sterling (not that far away, but the fact all of her families stayed on at the new location gave us a lot of comfort!). We are so happy to have locked in a spot with Rising Stars toddler class and have been very happy with the staff (dedicated teacher) and the technology-forward communication Val has implemented (all communications, photos of your kids - if you opt in, and billing is all handled through a central app/website). We receive updates daily on our son's activities and have been impressed with the variety of outside and inside curriculum that he has been exposed to at Rising Stars. We are excited for our son to spend the next few years here and would highly recommend Rising Stars if you're in the Herndon/Reston/Fairfax area looking for childcare.

I'm actually getting little weepy writing this review. And he learned so much too, my baby would come home and say the most hilarious things, like explaining bird migration to me. And he is on track with all the things he needs to be learning, so he'll be ready for kindergarten in a year. Beginning Bridges gave my son the exact experience I had hoped for in his start into school. And his teachers Mrs Skopowski and Mrs Dolezal always kept me well informed of his progress, activities... They passed on techniques to me to help me continue what he's learning in school, at home, like how to help him listen and process whatever I'm asking him to do. They even made it special for my younger son, who didn't understand why he had to return home with boring mommy everyday. They created a sign in clothespin for my little one, so he could find his name every morning on his clothespin and check in just like the big kids. And Tricia, who manages the school couldn't have been sweeter or more understanding of whatever my shortcomings were as a frazzled parent. We're moving to a different community and I'm so sad my kids won't be able to come back. Their new school has some big shoes to fill!

Since he loved attending his old Montessori school up to kindergarten, we wanted to find a Montessori school that offers an elementary program. Among the three options that we had in the area, we ended up choosing MSoFx, which turned out to be a wise choice. Above all else, my son simply loves his school and friends. The school offers the specials, including conversational Spanish, PE, and music lessons twice a week. My son started playing violin last fall from his music class, and I cannot believe how advanced he is in just one year. We also love the fact that they have a full-time chef who prepares lunch daily for children. The best part of his first year at MSoFx was the end-of-the year concert and play! It was also unique that they offered NNAT and CogAT assessments administered by George Mason University. All his teachers and staff have been amazingly kind and understanding throughout the year. Although we had looked for a temporary school to attend through the pandemic, we did not hesitate to enroll our son again this year. We are grateful that my son is thriving and happy in this school and much look forward to another great year.

Unlike many Montessoris in the area, their hours are great with before-care and extended after-care for working parents. It is a very clean school & they cook the food onsite. They have some fruit & veggie options for kids. As is the case with every school, some teachers are better than others. But they do adhere to The Montessori standards & encourage that style of learning which promotes independence & individual growth. The director Ms. Amiri is patient & kind. She is beloved by many students & willing to troubleshoot problems as they come up. They offer some extracurricular activities at an additional cost. The best part about this school is that they're not pushy, if it's not the right fit for your child, they will work with you to switch out.

Thankfully we stumbled upon OHP and have been so happy for the last 2 years. The teachers have been wonderful and so communicative. They offer classes as young as 2 years old which is rare for this area, as well as week long summer camps. My kids have thrived here compared to the daycares because it's an actual school. My selling point was even though it's inside a church, there is zero church affiliation, another hard thing to find in the area. We tell everyone we meet to check them out. I would love to see them be able to add a kiss & ride, the parking lot is perfectly laid out for it and it can get crowded, but that's my only suggestion! We love OHP!!

The extended care is pure daycare.) The teachers were generally good, with one notable exception all parents and students seemed to have an issue with. We have since moved, maybe she is retired, but what kind of principal/director keeps on a teacher who every family seems to have had an issue with? They also have multiple substitutes that the parents never meet. The management also lacked transparency, moving kids around mid-school year as convenient for them and with no warning, and then making up about why their change was a good for your child when they were upset by it. Then after I got them used to the change, they undid it. My sense was that it probably had to do with state regulatory codes on class size, but both the process and the way it was handled felt careless and indifferent.

However, the management staff and financial staff has been the opposite. Even after over a year of pointing out overcharges, they continue to assure us it will get done, but they still have not paid. This is an incredible center, and I know that my daughter is in wonderful care here. I highly recommend it!
