This spring we decided to finish about half of the basement to give us some additional living space and an office. We obtained bids from two local contractors, ultimately deciding to have the work done by William F. McMahon of Canandaigua, New York (also the town where we live). We chose to work with Mr. McMahon for several reasons; the first being that we simply trusted him immediately. He presents himself as an honest, down to earth person who just wants to do the very best for his customers. He is all that and more. Mr. McMahon worked with us on the design for the space and guided us in making certain decisions about where walls and doors should go, whether we could use the existing HVAC system or not (we could), what kind of flooring would work best, even what kind of paint to use and how much we would need. We told him what our budget was and he delivered a plan that hit the target, dead center! Then he gave us a New York State approved contract with every detail spelled out and dates for each phase--he hit every date, spot on. This project covered just under 800 sq. ft., and involved framing, drywall, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, flooring, and installation of all doors, trim and fixtures. Everything Mr. McMahon's crew and subs did was top notch; all his workers are experienced, friendly, hard-working, and quality conscious. Everything is plumb, true and finished beautifully. We could not have asked for more. If we were to have any more remodeling or construction work done, William McMahon would be the first (and only) contractor we would call. There is simply not a more honest, kind, and capable person in this field in this region of New York. We would recommend him to anyone!

So I asked my contractor to go and pick up the materials needed - quote in hand -! . He calls me to tell me that it would be $300 additional PLUS a 3% charge for using my credit card. WHAT? Contractor told me that the additional cost was for brackets - which I was specifically told were included in the original estimate. So we went from $580.- something to $888.85. I was forced to go ahead with it since now I have no railing and it is a dangerous situation. NOT HAPPY!
