They gave us a quote and then ended up charging over 30% over estimate. Plus plenty of wall dings and furniture dings. Beware!

I worked with a different moving company 2 years ago that left me scarred for life with how rude and unprofessional they were. I ended up having to finish the job myself (moving my giant couch up four flights of stairs), so when I knew I was moving again, I did my due diligence and sought out a few quotes. Another company quoted me almost $800 and required a 3 hour minimum for the job!! $800 seemed steep and I knew the job wouldn't take that long... Along came Bookstore Movers who quoted me a reasonable $470 minimum for two hours of work and a maximum of $680 for 3.5 hours of work (price breakdown: $140 per hour with 2 hour min. plus a $190 truck fee). I received a quote within a few hours of requesting it. There was no deposit required and the date was booked. I received detailed emails leading up to the move about FAQs, tips for a seamless move, and the names of my crew including contact info for the crew lead. Abdul (crew lead), Niiwayo "Y.O", and Milly were SO fast and friendly. They wrapped every single item with care in drop cloths and got to moving immediately. Despite the 90 degree heat and a total of five flights of stairs, the job was finished in 2 hours. I was SO impressed. I was so traumatized by my last move that I literally had to walk away while they moved the couch in but before I knew it, I got a text from my boyfriend telling me they had fit it through the door and our living room was all set up. I was so relieved and happy to work with them. If and when we move again, (hopefully not anytime soon, lol), I will 100% be contacting Bookstore Movers... and you should too!

They left my mattress in the elevator and I had to move it myself. Hell, I moved as much stuff as they did. And, they did a shot job of loading the truck, which was raggedy as hell, the pull out ramp was unusable. By this time the storage unit I'd reserved had closed for the day, so I had to store my stuff at my brothers place and now I have to rent a truck to move my stuff into the storage unit. A job that should have taken two hours, took almost four and cost me an extra $180. Horrible service.

I don't know if the shady business practices are customary of this company but I will never again use their services and neither will I recommend them. I needed both last-minute packing and moving services. I called around and TMT had availability and a reasonable rate. I confirmed with the movers that they would be packing, Eventually during packing they run out of boxes and I hear a conversation between one of the movers and Joel that they would bring about five more boxes. They also had to wait for him to bring some supplies they needed but didnt have on the truck to continue wrapping items. Fast forward to it being time to leave and there are products left in the bathroom and all of my dishes and some other kitchen items left. I was told it was a combination of items they were not allowed to pack (but were packed from other rooms just fine) and not bringing anymore boxes. At 2:07, I received a text message from one of the movers to let me know my new estimate was about $3,000. At 2:48 I receive a estimation revision with my "signature" on it quoting $3,000 because, I said my place would be fully packed, I misrepresented my apartments location, layout, or the use of stairs, and that all items were boxed. All lies. I called Joel to ask about this document and he said it was "just paperwork to cover his bases and not to worry" and when I asked why he had to cover his bases with lies, he spoke around it and assured me that everything was fine. He kept repeating that the original quote was for the high end, five hours another lie. I have a quote for up to 9.75 hours why would packing AND moving only take 5 hours? When he thought I had hung up, he laughed about me being upset. The next issue was my damaged items. My big items were all wrapped in saran wrap equivalent with a cover over it, not bubble wrap. My tv stand, desk, one of my ceramic plant pots are all broken and my dresser is chipped. (I did not include the dresser in the damage report because it was small and the desk is missing because I rushed to get them out) One of the movers who was previously VERY friendly with me became short and annoyed and any problem I raised became an issue that he reported to Joel who advised him of what to do. The damage insurance form says I will be contacted for full compensation for damages but according to Joel my "really big discount" of $140, or 10% makes up for those items being damaged. I was asked to sign the revision after the fact without being shown what I was signing. When I asked to see what I was signing, and then refused to sign false information the mover walked away from me upset. I was asked to sign a form that said all of my items were loaded on the truck. They weren't. I was asked to sign a form that said nothing was damaged. They were. I was charged for 26 boxes, only 20 were brought and used and Joel said it was my fault for the box shortage because I gave them an incorrect estimate. He also felt that compensation for my unpacked items would be five free boxes to do it myself. Only a few boxes were labeled even though I was told they all would be and placed in the correct room for easy unpacking, especially with a toddler. That couldn't happen so I just instructed them to place them in the same spot. I thought that was the end of it but one mover said that Joel would be contacting me to checkout instead of doing it right then. Joel called to settle the day and insinuated that I should be happy because my total really should be higher than what it was. I became extremely irate during this conversation because each time I presented a false statement or issue of another kind, he spoke over me and reminded me that he's "doing me a favor and saving me money while he's losing money." Correcting your false statements or compensating for your mishaps is not a favor or saving me money. You actually cost me money because I had to purchase supplies to pack fragile items from my kitchen and bathroom, and utilize time I didn't have to pack and transport them. I ended the conversation by alerting him that I would pay the final cost of ~1,400 to get it over with and to never contact me again and I hung up. The final cost was inside of the quoted range but Joel kept reminding me that it should have been MUCH higher and he so graciously gave me a "really big discount." I won't comment on some of the statements made or behavior of the movers because my issue is with the dishonest practices of Joel and they were under his instruction. I hired TMT to decrease an already stressful time and instead they added to it and cost me more time and money, if I could give 0 stars and recount my experience on a billboard in every major city, I would.

Daniel Petra owns 49% of the company; his wife owns 51%. Mr. Petra states on his website "All team members undergo comprehensive background checks and are fully bonded". Following the theft I asked Mr. Petra if his employees were bonded; his reply was that the company was insured but the employees were not bonded. I agree with Johana and TJ P. Daniel sounds like a great guy at the beginning of the process, told me he would be on site at my home to ensure that all went well, and was a no-show. No follow-up from him - he didn't contact me to check on how things went. When I told him about the theft, his response was basically "that's terrible - let me know if I can do anything". Yes, Mr. Petra, you can reimburse me for having to purchase a new vehicle, and you can vette your employees to ensure that you aren't hiring criminals! Petra Moving Company should not be in business. BEWARE! A different company may be more expensive, but you would not have to be concerned about any employees stealing from you. Cheryl H.

He talked a good game, promised everything would be smooth, and convinced me that overestimating time was "better than underestimating." I believed him. That was my first mistake. What followed was nothing short of a nightmare. He overestimated and under-delivered, then had the audacity to pad the final bill with hidden charges, mystery fuel costs, and a travel fee that was never once mentioned beforehand. When I asked for proof of these fees, he couldn't provide a single receipt. Instead, he became defensive, condescending, and downright nasty. The arrogance was unbelievable. While we were trying to settle the outrageous bill, he actually sent selfies of himself -- yes, selfies -- in the middle of a financial dispute, as if that somehow made him look credible. I've dealt with unprofessional people before, but this was on another level. He also made inappropriate comments about items we "might not need," which left me uneasy about what his real intentions were. And when I pushed back, he turned threatening and belligerent, refusing to take any accountability for his inflated prices or broken promises. This man is the walking definition of false confidence and zero integrity. Don't let his friendly tone in the beginning fool you -- it's all an act. Once he has your deposit, the professionalism evaporates. Save yourself the stress, the money, and the regret. Do not hire this mover. He's the kind of person who makes you wish Yelp allowed negative stars.

My wife and I moved from a 1 bedroom apartment (~930sq ft) to a 1 bedroom condo (~1000sq ft). The distance between the locations was about 30 mins at most (DC to Alexandria). The movers arrived right on time, were very professional, and were very careful with our things. Now the bad: they were exceptionally slow. I have moved twice before with the exact same amount of total items/furniture using different movers and it took them about 1.5hrs total for the entire move. I hired Local Motion for 2 hours and it ended up taking them 8 hours. While there was a small delay of 30 minutes due to no fault of their own, their sluggishness was unacceptable. They took every single item one at a time. They had 2 movers with 2 big wooden furniture 4 wheeled moving dollies, but they only ever used one. I don't know why they couldn't go twice as fast taking 2 boxes at a time. Then to top it all off, we all left my old apartment at 1:28pm, they said they would take a lunch and meet us back at my new place in an hour. No problem. They showed up an hour later and took another ~2.5 hours to unload everything. When it came time to pay they said "oh we actually didn't take a lunch" unfortunately I wasn't there when we paid them, but they absolutely took an hour lunch and took advantage of my wife when she paid. I would not recommend using them as they are exceptionally slow, and will do everything they can to make sure your reasonable quote is not what you pay
