Yesterday, I needed to run to Athens from Ripley WV for an errand and my son said HEY since we have a little extra time, can we try McHappys Bake Shoppe? I said "Of Course!!" Thinking to myself, what woman is gonna turn down Donuts??? My 2yr old grandbaby starts chanting Donuts Donuts with her Uncle...40 yr old Uncle We get to McHappys which is very easy to locate, thanks to the signage for directions. Its a cute little brown building with a very eye-pleasing Logo Sign. We go inside (tiny parking lot also) but they do offer a drive-thru! Calliope my 2yr old, her eyes get wide and glassy as her Uncle takes her closer to the showcase. The employee was super friendly! My immediate thought was, this room is bright cheery and smells like Bakery Heaven...I could live here!! I tell her we want 6 Donuts and Calliope chooses first a Cake Donut with Pink Strawberry Icing with Pink & White Sprinkles, I choose 2 Glazed and A chocolate Nut Icing Glazed for my Hubby and my son Chooses a Glaze and for his 2nd a Blueberry Cake Glazed Donut! I was tempted to get a few cookies, whooping Pies and Cupcakes because everything looked so yummy and festive! But I did choose a Canoli and a piece of Baklava! In total it was $19.02 and I left her a tip of $3 in her tip glass! I definitely recommend if you are in the Athens area to swing by. My god. Ohhhhhhhh dear lord their donuts were twice as good as I expected. To be honest from the counter and the lobby, they didn't look great. They looked ... fare. We were visiting the area for Thanksgiving - this one popped up with some good reviews. The building is unassuming, but the inside is cute! Place is bright and clean. The lady working had wonderful customer service. She was very helpful and cheerful when she found out we are new to this shop. We went home with half dozen, muffin and a canoli. She said everything is baked from their bakery and shipped to store. Their donuts are good, fluffy and moist.. all providing a mouth feel and not...dry and sad like a lot of places. My husband loved the canoli. I would highly recommend! Limited variety compared to some, but they are good with that they do have! read more

Honestly horrific customer service the old woman behind the counter was so disgruntled at a customer coming in to her place of business at 10:30am on a Sunday I'm amazed she bothered to open at all. Since we all know that my day would not be complete without a donut, I couldn't resist a stop at McHappy's Donuts and Bake Shoppe while in Athens. I grabbed a cream horn, a long john and a glazed cake so I had the chance to really try an assortment of their product. Overall, good donuts but nothing crazy out of the ordinary spectacular. Then again, it's really hard for me to find a donut I don't like. This bakery started over 40 years ago, and they still use the same recipe today. All goodies are baked fresh each morning and they have a massive assortment to choose from. Seriously so much more than just donuts. This place has the fluffiest donuts I have ever tasted. I had the creme filled chocolate glazed donut. My daughter had the easter basket, a mini cake. I also purchased a mini pecan pie to take to my mother. The associate who served us was Clara, who was super helpful and very friendly-give her a layered brownie for being a great face of the company mission! I would give this place five stars but, I have a son who is vegan and there was literally nothing he could enjoy. I will say your sweet tooth will be satisfied here. Stopped in on the way from Ohio to North Carolina. This little donut shop is amazing! We got the cake donuts, long johns, and regular donuts, all tasted fresh. The whole area was clean and had a great atmosphere. She was kind and patient when we were indecisive on which one of the amazing donuts we wanted to try. They also have a convenient drive through. This is such an amazing place for treats. Mchappy's is known for donuts but they have so much more than donuts. They have cookies, muffins, cupcakes, brownies and lots more delicious treats. When I crave donuts, I come to McHappy's. Old fashioned, fluffy yeast donuts are my favorite! Do yourself a favor and come first thing in the morning because they're fresh and so amazingly soft it's like the sweetest dream, as if you never woke up; lifesaving on days when all you wanted was more sleep, but life happened. Painfully standard. The donuts are not bad, and no one would complain about having them, but they are definitely nothing special. They are made daily in a factory nearby and driven to the various locations on trucks in the morning before open. This location did recently remodel though and has a really nice atmosphere, and the staff there has always been really nice and helpful. If I am really craving a donut, I might go in right before they close as they are bagging the day olds for tomorrow (various prices but I go for the $1.99 bags of six). I've been going there for a while, I spend about $30.00 or so a week! I bought 6 cookies last Saturday. They weren't burnt but they're brown on the bottom and hard as rocks! The woman at the counter has waited on me lots of times and has always done a good job! She was talking to whoever the woman in the office was who couldn't be bothered to come and speak face to face with me! The woman in the office kept insisting she had checked in the cookies and they weren't burnt. ( I never said they were. Just hard as rocks.) She asked me to bring them back next time. (I live fifteen miles away) So I told her that! She insisted that she had checked them in on Friday ( I still don't understand what she meant by this.)and they weren't burnt. By this time I'm beginning to get mad ! I said if you want to call me a liar I won't be back! She never once came out of the office, she still insisted they weren't burnt! Now I'm passed she is calling me a liar, can't even look me in the eye's! So I told her I will never be back which made the cashier go Oh, no! A I've been a good customer!
