I never thought I would say this, but the barbecue here has Texas beat hands down. This is what you call downright good barbecue, meat falling off the bones BBQ, and the best BBQ sauce in the business. McGhin's puts its love into each item on the menu. I ordered the Pit Fries for starters. Now, this could be an entree by itself. But after getting happily stuffed on the pit fries, you know you're in for real BBQ, so you keep going. My baby's back ribs slid off the bones. I save one and put the meat into my baked beans. Now, that was a good combination of BBQ sauce, meat, and beans. I cut into my sweet potato, which was still very hot, causing my butter to melt perfectly. After eating, I thought I was finished, but I had to ask the waitress about the peach cobbler. Well, as you see, I got it. It is the best-tasting crust-filled peach cobbler. Usually, at other places, it's just peaches. Well, not here; it measures just right, half peaches and a little more crust! Got there and nothing was ready. Still sitting here at 11:54am way past the company's lunch time and still do not have the food. Everyone's walking out bc their Togo orders were still not ready. UNACCEPTABLE! If I didn't already pay for it I would have just went and purchase individual lunches from somewhere else. People who had pre-ordered were in an out in the proverbial flash. $18.30 purchased 5 slices of cracklin' cornbread, a pint of Brunswick stew, and a quarter pound of chopped pork. The pork was free of bark, lacked smoke, and needed dousing in the house sauce that came separately with the order to get some flavor. The stew was nicely thick, but bland; a healthy dollop of the ever reliable Louisiana hot sauce saved the day. Happily, the cornbread proved a very good bite, and the leftovers were still fresh the following morning when I warmed them up for breakfast. I will start with saying we went on a Saturday night and it was the day before Mother's Day this year. That's not why we went, it's just where everyone wanted or eat. It was about a 30 minute wait as expected. This was not a negative. When our party of 5 (five) got seated we got put in a "long booth". A long booth is big enough for 4 adults and maybe two SMALL children. Certainly not 5 average size adults. We were taken to the table and asked if it was ok. Obviously the restaurant thought it was as they took us there. Were we going to be jerks on a busy night? No. But where they sat us was inappropriate for our party size. As a result, I sat PRESSED against a wall all the meal only being able to use my right arm to eat the whole meal. There was no picking up that sandwich to eat that I ordered. And to add... I was the ONLY real mother in the group. Glad I wasn't be celebrated that night. I want to say that all the food was fantastic. The meat in the pork sandwich was great and the fries are reminiscent of Jim N Nicks home fries they stopped making...my favorites. Huge plus for me for Southern Pit. The corn bread is amazing but needs to come with more than two little butters for a basket when there are FIVE people eating the cornbread. We also ordered fries pickles that were good but not great as the breading was falling off the sides of the pickles. Along with a big basket of pickles came one tiny one inch tall by one inch wide ranch for FIVE people to share to dip with. That was a total fail. One couple ate the little container while the other three of us had dry fried pickles sans any dip or dressing of any kind. Maybe they were trying to " conserve" because they were so busy but a dollop for a whole basket was extreme. Bad form all the way around. The waitress was super nice but a lightly flighty without attention to detail. But she was super busy as well, sooooo. Just hard to eat when your glass is empty for quite a while and no one around to help with that. I will go back again because the food itself was so good. Also the portions were good as were the prices. Southern pit, you need to quit being chintzy with the little things so it is a relaxing and stress free experience . Next time put that group of 4 at that long table and wait a few minutes longer for appropriate seating for a party of 5. People would rather be comfortable than seated sooner. The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and cozy like I would expect in a bbq pit place. I wanted to give you more than 3 stars, but you made my first experience very distressful. I will say the flavor and quality of the food is 5 stars. 0 stars for wanting to escape being a one arm eating bandit with no sauces and left thirsty. read more

We still love this place and keep coming back when we are in the area. This is more traditional Georgia Southern BBQ, and for me it's nostalgic in the best ways. Top tips, the meat is always gonna taste better with sauce, and while you're at it add some to the Brunswick stew as well. The cornbread is nice and greasy like we like it with cracklins (if ya know ya know). Add a little slaw to your BBQ sandwich for some additional layers of great flavor. Today we ate here with a larger group of family! The service was excellent, the food was amazing and it had to be hands down the quickest I've ever gotten my food especially with a group of 20! I would 10/10 recommend! I had the pulled pork plate with coleslaw and fries. The pork was a hefty portion and delicious! The coleslaw has the best I've had from a restaurant in a long time, it wasn't overly moist and was uniformly chopped (it paired well on top of the pork) the fries are rough cut, which we all know are superior, not to crunchy not to soggy! We also got a small cup of Brunswick stew for our baby and she LOVED it, I'm a stickler for Brunswick stew and it was definitely one I'll be back for! A hidden gem of a BBQ shack. It's rare to find a BBQ place with good stew and BBQ but this one definitely has both. Everything was practically perfect. The fries are rough cut, and they're home sauce was a good balance leaning slightly to the sweet side. Prices are fair 11$ for most regular plates, 17.50 for all you can eat. Service was quick and friendly with plenty of staff (our visit was at peak lunch time on a Saturday). The decor was a rustic vintage very fitting for a southern BBQ shack. Southern Pit is pretty good! I haven't had in years due to me making my own bbq often. I had some that my job supplied and I was like hell I want some more. I got the 7 ribs came with one piece of cornbread. I got a pint of slaw which I loved and two extra pieces of cornbread. All was really good but the slaw just hits different. Different in a good way. This place stays busy so you have to be patient. We called in and was told 15 mins. So we drove there and still had to wait another 30 mins. People here seem to really love the place tho. I had really high hopes for this BBQ. Not only are the Yelp reviews good but when we pulled up before it opened, cars were waiting! A line formed that made it feel like the day before a Black Friday sale. I asked the people in front of us in line if the food was good and what they recommended. They said it was the best around. I can't say they lied-- It IS the best BBQ in Griffin. Sadly, that isn't saying much. I was born in the South and have even lived in Texas. Our meal wasn't even in the running for good BBQ. We got the Smoked 2-Piece meal (ribs and bone in chicken) with Brunswick stew, cornbread and mac'n'cheese /fries. The mac'n'cheese tasted like it came from a box. It was soupy with no weight to it. The cornbread was greasy (which is fine!) and lacked flavor (which is NOT.). The best side we had was the Brunswick stew. We both enjoyed that. On to the BBQ...This place is relying too heavily on smoking the meat for flavor. There was no seasoning, grill charring, or evidence of marinated flavor. That's a big no-no for me. My husband put the chicken on the grill for a couple minutes once we got home to crisp up the skin and save it. Upon the first bite we both immediately realized that the people who eat here haven't had good BBQ. Not even the good BBQ in the city of Atlanta or from an uncle who can throw down on the grill. You'll mainly find seniors and locals who aren't looking for exceptional food. My husband and I are foodies--we're always in search for the best. In Griffin GA, on ok spot for BBQ. I say this as a person who knows good BBQ. The meats are ok, but not great. The sides are actually very good. Keep in mind that the locals don't have much in this area in restaurants without going to Atlanta, where you have much better choices, but you have to fight the traffic, which is terrible.
