We have only kudos for the service we got from McDowell & Son. We moved to the area in March, and knew the house we purchased had a heating & AC system that were original to the house and well past their typical rated lifespans, and likely to die on either the hottest or coldest day of the year. Getting replacements was always on our list of "to do's," and so we called a highly rated HVAC company to get a quote. The guy came out, looked around, and then NEVER provided a quote despite repeated calls and requests. OK ... on to McDowell & Son. M&S came out promptly and provided us with several options and price points. Terry didn't try to sell us the most expensive system, but explained how the various units would work (all 3 would be fine for our house); described some ways to help us keep the house cool (or warm) given that we would only have a one-zone system, and overall provided a professional experience even at the RFQ stage. We scheduled time for an installation. And guess what? A little over a week before installation date, the area is hit with a big heat wave, temps above 100, and yes - the AC died. And it got hot. And hotter. We called to see if we could get bumped up on the schedule, but the equipment wasn't all in place and they had other jobs scheduled, but they were kind enough to bring out a single room AC loaner for us, which at least gave us one room to escape to at night. When installation day(s) arrived, the crew was prompt. We got calls the day before each installation day advising us when the crew would arrive. The team that did the installation was courteous and professional; they kept the work area neat; all the old stuff was removed and debris taken away. There were a few hiccups here and there (a piece of equipment arrived damaged; our crawl space was a little odd) but they managed around those things. The difference the new, modern AC has made is incredible. It does a great job cooling the entire house (before the upstairs was always problematic); it's quieter; it has so many scheduling options for flexibility. Again, though, the equipment isn't what made the experience memorable - it was the great service from McDowell and Son. Well, unfortunately after a few years I have to lower my review. While they were good at the small job of inspecting my furnace, they couldn't handle a larger job of installing central air in my home. I called to get a quote and after a week of not hearing anything I called back. It's been about 2 months and I'm still waiting for Terri to call me back. I was able to call a different company, Honke Heating & Air Conditioning in Gresham. They came out, gave me a quote and installed my new AC unit before I even got a call back from McDowell or his Son. Hood River flakey customer service strikes again. read more

While I was gone in Belize on a missions trip my wife who was 7 months pregnant had the misfortune of our furnace going out. McDowell and Son's brought her heat on a Saturday, diagnosed the problem and ordered parts. Our furnace was fixed that following week faster and less expensive than our neaighbors furnace that was fixed by another company and they did not get portable heat or Saturday service! read more

Excellent service! My A/C broke and I was desperate for assistance because the heat wave had everyone booked for the remainder of the week. Terri called me back and walked me through what he anticipated was the problem and even explained how I might fix it myself (since his technicians were also booked for a few days). He was so thorough in his explanation and patient with me, considering I'm a person who has never even given an A/C unit a second glance. He even offered to sell me a spare part that I could install myself! He genuinely seemed to care about my situation and even told me to call him back and give him the resolution (even if it wasn't with the help of his company) just so he would know I was taken care of. When we call for anything someone always gets right back to us or comes over to address whatever need it is we have. Most reviews focus on the competence, fairness, and punctuality of a contractor. However, in the case of my interaction with McDowell and Son, that is where the review STARTS. Yes, McDowell is competent, fair and punctual, but these attributes do not begin to describe the quality of this company. The management and field staff of McDowell and Son are genuinely good people who clearly enjoy helping others. I live in a small town with a limited number of heating and air conditioning contractors. Some of those contractors take advantage of this fact, providing mediocre service on a schedule that suits them more than the customer. This is definitely NOT the case with McDowell and Son. The day after I contacted them, they were at my house inspecting my HVAC system. Moreover, they had two of their employees bring over a small, portable air conditioner that I could use at no cost until my new system was installed!This was, possibly literally, a life saver for me, because the repairs to my HVAC system occurred during a record-setting heat wave, and I had just begun chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. Finally, McDowell and Son should be recognized for their willingness to deal directly with my home warranty company, a willingness that no other contractor in the area shared. I was amazed by the patience they showed in explaining their diagnosis to uncomprehending people at the home warranty company, sending email after email and making phone call after phone call.
