I really wanted a caramel sundae. I had already gone to one McDonald's in search of ice cream and in the time it took me to walk from my home to that location, they turned off ordering for any ice cream products, so I came here. I went through the drive-through and the first thing they asked is if I would be using the app to order. That's weird. Why would I use the app to order in the drive-through? I came drive-through to talk to a human being. I asked for a caramel sundae and one for my husband too. The worker tells me my total and I pull forward and pay. I go to the second window. The worker there hands me two paper cups with just ice cream in them. I said, "I'm sorry but I asked for caramel sundaes." The worker said, "This is a plain sundae." What the heck is a plain sundae? A sundae, by definition, is ice cream with a topping on it, usually fudge or chocolate, sometimes strawberry or caramel. A sundae has toppings. I learned that at McDonald's, "plain sundae" is something you can order and it's just a cup of soft serve. In any case, I didn't order a plain sundae, I ordered a caramel sundae. The worker yelled something back to the first person who I had ordered from, then topped the ice creams with some caramel and handed them back to me. At least the price is the same for a "plain sundae" and caramel or chocolate versions, so I didn't have to pay the difference. Also, I gotta say, McDonald's really is practicing shrinkflation, as the last time I got a caramel sundae when it used to be in the plastic cups, it sure seemed like a lot more ice cream and a lot more caramel. We went to the Waialae Ave, McDonald's because they had a promotion on the smoky bacon sandwich, if you purchase the sandwich you get a free small French fries and a drink. And another coupon if you buy a smoky bacon sandwich you get a free Kit Kat shake this is the 2nd time we been there and still haven't gotten to try the smoky bacon sandwiched this cashier was very uncaring and didn't want to help in anyway, so we left. The first time we went we were told they ran out of sauce, so we told her don't need the sauce just give us the sandwich without the sauce. Then we were told they didn't have lettuce and tomato, so they couldn't make the smoky bacon sandwich , at least this counter person was more helpful in trying to replace another meal, since they were out of the smoky bacon sandwiches. Then we went another time and no sauce again, but this time they said they will give us a quarter pounder with lettuce and tomato in place of the smoky bacon sandwich, but no bacon? I don't understand why they have a promotion and don't have the necessary ingredients to make the sandwich? There were customers in front of us asking to order and was told they are all out? My order was taken immediately and I received my order in less than 3 minutes! This location still had the Disney 100 figurines available at @11 am. on 11/08/23. The last 5 times I went to this McDonald's they didn't have any WiFi. I couldn't order anything because I was out of data. What a waste of time and kind of McDonald's doesn't have WiFi in 2026 ??? Besides, even when they have WiFi they treat you badly there. You can find yourself waiting for 10 minutes, sometimes more, just to have your order taken, even though there's nobody else in line. Meanwhile they're all running around serving people who ordered through the Drive through. They are the priority, the people in comfort of their car are served before the customers in the actual restaurant. And then if you dare make a special order ( like no pickles or no onions...) they will mess your special orders more than half of the time anyway. BEWARE!!!! There's either an IDIOT or a THIEF working the drive-thru register at the McDonald's on Wai'alae Avenue in Kaimuki. Late evening, on Thursday, June 19, 2025, got food at this drive-thru. Tossed the change in a bag, went home, ate the chicken strips, which were lousy: dry, overcooked, gristly, tasteless. Didn't check the change until the next day. Out of a $20 bill, I was supposed to get $14.25 in change. I GOT SHORTCHANGED $10.00. My bad for not checking at the window. Not expecting a refund. With my health issues, not sure I want to exert the effort to talk to the manager. But the manager should be aware there may be a problem employee on staff. Having worked a register, management should be able to tell if the till doesn't balance. If it does balance, then my $10 must have been pocketed. Doing errands within the area and felt hungry for a sudden? A quick eats can solve your solution and McDonald's will be one of the option! Parking is not a lot so at times it can be challenging. Customer service is a hit or miss always - depends who and how great or bad that person's day at the counter. Service is pretty good and every time we come here the staffs are not that grouchy. Food is what it is - fast food! Less to no nutrients but sometimes conveniency is the key to get that errands done asap. There are plenty of chairs and tables - pretty casual. "You know what you are getting" Any of the fast food restaurants have standardized their offerings to a T. What do I mean? No matter where you go across the United States, when you walk into a McDonalds you know exactly what to expect. The offerings do pretty much taste the same, whether it be in Honolulu, Hi or Casper, Wyoming a Big Mac is going to hit you the same way. The French fries will have that same degree of crispness, the hazelnut iced coffee will have the same degree of sweetness. Sort of homogenized comfort food. We like to try variations, we like different kinds of burgers, but sometimes because of cost, convenience, or just mood, we want to eat something that brings us back to a simpler or less stressful time which comfort food can do. I give my online code and get to the food pickup window and the poor lady has a bag but looks pretty frustrated. She's talking to the manager and it seems like the burgers aren't ready. So we wait another 5 minutes. It sounded like the manager told her to make the burgers herself or something and all she could say was she's giving food out the window. Years of bad service. The service here is good but I was really disappointed with the smaller size of the sundae. I got multiple beverages plus the sundae so I asked for a carrier. The regular carrier is too big for the sundae cup so the cups is tilting. The sundae cover does not fit the smaller cup. What a mess since it melted faster. I don't eat at McDonald's often, I only would get their breakfast platters (spam, egg and rice) and drinks (unsweetened iced teas, coffee, Powerade and smoothies) here. I haven't had their Mcnuggets, fries and burgers in years because as all fast food restaurants are unhealthy with lots of empty calories, grease and salt. The last time I had some Mcnuggets is when my cousin brought some over to share out of a 20 pieces box and I ate like 6 pieces with sweet and sour sauce. It didn't taste that great to me as a runner and occasional swimmer. You'll feel "full" as in bloated (too much salt can cause inflammation) from their food than actually being full in eating eggs, chicken and other healthier foods. To be fair at their competition, I only have their breakfast menus there as well because it's the only thing I could eat on their menus besides their drinks. It's how people become obese, heart disease and other allied health problems from eating too many unhealthy empty calories from fast food. Unless you work out as much as Usain Bolt, who ate like almost 100 chicken mcnuggets before his Olympics runs but not many people workout and train like Olympians. I am biased towards this McDonald's because I've grown up by it because my school was in the vicinity of this location, so this always brings back memories especially when all the high schoolers come here after school. They're good on drinks, but it's been a while since I got their breakfast platter pre-pandemic. They have a bathroom which is clean and well stocked, the employees unlock it for you to enter. The seating area is updated, comfortable and its easy to refill your drinks at this location when you dine indoors. I do order the extra sauces, butter and utensils with my breakfast platter and usually line up to order because the touch screen doesn't always work for me and I'd want the employees to keep their jobs not be taken away from technology. I usually get good customer service from this location, but only visit this location if I'm in the area to run errands. They don't sanitize between each person dining indoora and mask are required to enter inside unless actively eating and drinking. No vaccination card required. If I could give this review no stars, I most certainly would. I frequent McDonalds locations because of its convenience and the fact that I love their ice coffee and utilize their app frequently. As a former college student that went to school right down the road along waialae I would often get food here in the past without problems. Today I went through their drive thru and came out very dissatisfied to say the least. Now I am not one to complain and a lot of reviews I pride in building businesses up, and am easy to please however. Lori left me very unhappy as a frequent customer. While attempting to pay in the drive thru she made me go to the last window and refused to help me simply because I was grabbing my coins to pay and took too long. Simply stating "this is too long I need to go" left me upset. I address this in high hopes that this doesn't happen to someone else say an elderly individual who is trying to pay. What lousy customer service. No matter what kind of day Lori had there was no excuse and more importantly no one behind me to rush me like that. Especially having a disability.
