This specific location is currently being renovated. It is looking so much better! Hopefully this means, no more flies.

Hangry Joes High Point Hot Chicken

There has been a wealth of new fried chicken joints opening up in the Triad lately, and while we…read moreall love more options for crispy fried poultry, they all come with their own nuances. This spot, Hangry Joes, in my opinion has more in common with Korean style fried chicken, than a Nashville hot, or traditional southern place. The menu is diverse, and they make everything look exceptionally large and tasty... honestly, in my opinion, that ends up working against them. Compared with what is presented in their imagery, you are nearly certain to be let down by what you are given. Let me explain. I ordered the "Mega Sando Combo." The picture of a huge chunk of chicken spilling well outside the bun with plenty of tangy slaw and pickles really sold it as the thing I want. Also, when words like "Mega" are used, you are specifically creating large imagery. The reality... it's an 8 ounce chicken breast. The sandwich given to me was larger than one I would be handed at Chick-Fil-A, but not A LOT larger. It all fit completely under the bun. The amount of slaw on the sandwich was very modest... i would even say sparse. While the sandwich was absolutely tasty, my expectations were way off base, and they designed it that way. I think that's a bad thing. The price was also pretty Mega, and the amount of fries it came with... weren't even medium. We had the same issue with the loaded Mac n Cheese bowl. Again.. pictured as bountiful and spilling over the top. Reality, you would not have even had to press down to put a lid on it to go. It all was below the threshold. They also should be serving the sauce on the side with the bowls... there was so much buffalo sauce in the bowl it just tasted like eating a bowl of sauce rather than sauced chicken with mac n cheese. I have now learned my lesson. I'll come back, because really, both the sandwich and the fries were very tasty... but to be honest, not as often as I'd like, and with expectations that I have now created for myself, as opposed to seriously way overblown menu images.

The inside was very clean and the staff was hard at work. We ordered off the kiosk and got to spend as much time as needed figuring out what we wanted to order. I got the sweet & spicy bacon burger, fries and an OJ. My husband got a double Whataburger with fries and a fountain drink. Our food was brought out by a very pleasant and polite young lady with orange in her hair. I'm sad I didn't catch her name as she was wonderful! My OJ was missing but she had no problem grabbing me one when asked! We tried a fry on the way home, and I'm glad we did. We have about a 15 min drive and the fries did not hold up hot and fresh. They were still good, but that first car fry was amazing! We'll definitely dine in or eat the fries in the car next visit! The burgers were phenomenal. They were full of flavor and the toppings complemented them nicely! They were nice and hot when we got home as well! Only downside was the missing sauces in our bag. Not a deal breaker and I should have checked before we left, but it's okay! We have ketchup at home and I hadn't yet decided how to use my ranch! Great experience and we will be back to this location!

My husband got the #2, which is the Double Whataburger with fries and a drink. We waited do about 5-10 min for our food. We both agreed the burgers were pretty big and were pretty good. I should have asked for light mustard. It had more mustard than what I usually like, but it was okay. There weren't many onions on my burger. I couldn't taste them at all. The fries were hot, crispy and pretty good as well. Not sure what all the hype was about and the long lines in drive-thru when they first opened because I've had better. Would I go again? Maybe.

California Burritos - California burrito

I do love a good burrito, so when I was in the area I decided to try the California Burrito here…read more It is big, but it is also costly at almost $14. This is an interesting dish, one that originated in San Diego in the 1980's, and soon spread across the country. It is quite different from the burrito that originated in Northern Mexico, especially around the city of Chihuahua before 1900. The dish started with the carne asada burrito and added cheese, guacamole, sour cream, pico, and even seasoned French fries. I found this burrito interesting but it is not one I'd order again, entirely too busy for me, and the texture is all over the place. I did like the restaurant overall, and will return at some point to try some of their other offerings.

I honestly went in expecting it to be kind of like Chipotle or Moe's, but this place is unique and has a flavor all its own. I got the signature California Burrito, and it was FANTASTIC and so big I couldn't even finish it. Chicken or steak, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, and the big kahuna: their seasoned fries. Ohhhh my gosh. The flavor in every bite of this burrito- I didn't even need the queso or sauces. Aside from the burrito though, the chips and queso were great too! I will absolutely be back, and I'll see you there!

The12 spots stretch from Jacksonville NC in the east to Hendersonville in the west! And there appear to be plans to expand into Greensboro, and perhaps Burlington. I like that these are company run operations, it can make quality controls matters easier to administer and monitor. Perhaps the biggest contributor to inconsistent quality at fast food chains is the quality control mandates are not vigorously enforced. The only major chain that I'm aware of that does insist standards be met is Jersey Mike's, and they have even suspended franchisee agreements of non- compliant stores. This is a very nice location, bright and shiny with easy access to drive thru or parking. I ordered two hot dogs, one with mustard and sauerkraut and one with mustard, chili, and onions. I don't order the combo here because I don't care for the FF. As usual the hot dogs were excellent, and I am becoming quite fond of the sauerkraut dog - the kraut has a nice bite to it. All in all this was a very good spot, perhaps the best Dairi-o I've visited.

When I parked, I saw a sign for a new cheesecake stuffed waffle with bacon and maple syrup that looked delicious. At that point, I was torn between which one I wanted. I ordered at 10:30pm. I got the sausage, egg, and cheese waffle sandwich combo with fries and strawberry tea. With the $1 discount, it was $7.78 after tax. Per receipt, the cashier was Carol. He was friendly and polite. There was signature requesting patience as staff navigate a new ordering system. While waiting, I noticed a bunch of tea spilled on the counter. I'm not sure how long it had been there prior to be noticing or even how long it stayed there. All I'm saying, is you couldn't miss it. I also decided to eat in versus getting it to go. I received my food at 10:33am. Of course, I began munching on my fries first. I definitely had mixed consistency. I feel like majority were a somewhat overcooked, especially for wedges while a few here and there were fine. With my sandwich, I was a bit nervous as it has spicy syrup and I'm not a huge fan of spicy. However, I didn't have much of the syrup on my sandwich. I'm neutral about this lol. I enjoyed the sandwich those! As expected, the strawberry sweet tea was delicious. I love how they put actually strawberries in it. The only downside to that is it blocks the straw. Maybe they should consider wider straws to combat that. Before I left, I did stop the restroom. There was a peculiar aroma but it could have been from a previous occupant. The paper towel dispenser was opened. I'm not sure if it's broke or someone was being lazy.

These trips often centered on NC BBQ, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Fried Chicken, and Fried Seafood, and sometimes a local specialty or two - think Liver Pudding in Shelby, Sonker Festival in Mt Airy, Soft Shell Crab in May on the OBX, Eastern NC BBQ and Collards in Ayden, Pork Chop Sandwich at Snappy Lunch in Mt Airy, and more. I don't do these kinds of food runs as often now, nor do I range as far afield, but there is much with in 100 miles that offers a nice adventure. On this 2 day run into High Point/Thomasville I was interested in burgers and hot dogs primarily, some new spots, some old friends! I intended to visit the Dairi-os in High Point and Thomasville, the Cook Out in High Point, Oscar's Fine Food, The Dog House, and Tucker's Grill. I also intended to pick one from Curry & Spice, Island Fest, or Sixty Six Grill in Thomasville. This was my first stop here and I ordered the Big Double with Cheese, Lettuce, and Tomato, but no Mayo. I don't care for the mayo here, it is very thin, and runs everywhere. I add Duke's mayo from a small packet, then add salt and pepper, and I'm good to go. This was a very, very good cheeseburger once adjusted, and the tomato (which you'll pay extra for, as well as the slice of cheese). The total with the tomato and cheese was $4.59, still a bit of a bargain in today's market place. The slice of tomato was huge and delicious.
