Delicious fish and chips and fried shrimp. We were visiting from California and The Latin Quarter was on our list of places to visit after Cliffs of Moher. This place is casual and you line up to order your food. Staff bring the food to your table. The staff is efficient and quick. The ambience is simple, but cute. We enjoyed our meal here. read more

This place was recommended by our tour guide of the day and it exceeded our expectations. The portions were huge, it was delicious, amazing customer service, and all of the decorations were fun to look at. This is an award winning spot and it deserves all of them and more. Prices were very budget friendly and great portions. The cod fish and chips was very good and the oysters were good (as good as oysters can be) and fresh from that morning! Definitely will go again! read more

The cod fish and chips were cooked perfectly and great flavor. The onion rings are fantastic! And the oysters....I may have to go back just for them!! They were incredible. The fish soup/stew was very boring. Save your money and get more oysters! read more

Everything was great! We were here 15 years ago and wanted to come back for the fantastic fish, many choices, but we chose the house fav of cod. The oysters were delicious and tasted fresh from the water! I agree with other reviews that the chips were just ok.... Maybe it's the American taste buds because the newspaper reviews claim they win year after year! Take time to read the framed prints on the wall because it's very interesting to learn the history off over 100 years. We stopped in with a party of 8 right at noon and didn't have a problem finding seats. read more

First thing to know: my husband has the patience of a saint. I mean he'd have to, obviously. Through at least three trips to Galway, he has said to whichever group we were traveling with at the time,"we should go to McDonagh's if you want really good fish and chips." Did any of us ever listen? Not really. "But Bobby Flay said this place was the best he had ever had!" I pitched. We went and all agreed - it was gross. "Ooooh, meat pies!" said my dad and stepmother. We enjoyed them, but we may have been alone in that since they have already closed. Finally on our third trip, just me and the fella with no other outside influences, he could really stick his heels in. "We are GOING to McDonagh's this time." And so of course we did. He had been so very patient after all. And so very right as he so often is. I went rogue here, but bear with me. These folks are SLANGING the fish. It's flying out fast and furious from this well oiled machine. It's one of those magical, "yes the place is packed but by the time your food is up a table will have (probably) opened" joints. The process is fairly simple (unless you are indecisive or English is not your first language) but you do need to move quickly to avoid the ire of those around you. Step one - pick a fish. There are several. After experiences elsewhere I know I do not want smoked fish or ray. I hate salmon. This helps to narrow things down. Cod it is. But wait - what's this? They have chicken? Fried chicken? (this is where I went rogue, but my husband and I are professional plate sharers so I knew this way we could both try chicken AND fish). Step two - order chips (unofficial requirement). Step three - order any other sides - I suggest curry for the mandatory chips from step two. Step four - order Guinness. Not as mandatory as chips, but strongly recommended. Step five - pay. Look around and panic a little bit because all the tables are full. Step six - rejoice as seats open up moments before your food is ready for pick up. Step seven - nirvana. Swap a piece of fish for a piece of chicken and toast your wise and patient husband. read more

Food was mediocre. I had the scampi and chips and the oysters. Not sure how to mess up chips but they did. The bigger issue is the staff and seating. They are quite rude and come up and rearrange people to different tables. I sat opposite a stranger while my brother sat opposite another stranger. Think Seinfeld's The Soup Nazi. Not worth it at all. There are other oyster options in Galway. read more

2 hours at Galway is not enough. It's a lovely town and quite crowded on weekends as there's also a farmer's market. Since it's a coastal town,. I wanted to get some seafood and this is apparently an institution with the locals. Oysters were freshly shucked and so yummy. I should have gone for half dozen. I had to have the fish soup as recommended by the tour guide although Ola didn't specify where to have it. The chips were really good and I had cod. The batter was crisp and the fish flaky and tasty. Lots of ketchup on the table and I sat there watching the world go by. An Irish man sat next to me and struck up a conversation which was really nice. read more

Heard this was the best fish in town (and was told to skip the chips). After tasting I think I would have to agree - the code was excellent! I gambled on some onion rings since they were ~€2 and I wanted to follow the reco on chips - not bad. Fish is the hero for sure read more

One of the best fish and chips ever had. You get to choose the type of fish you want from 8 different types of fish. And you can choose the chip or others, I had the onion rings, they are very thick. I had the Hake fish, because I like the hake fishiness, the batter is thin and crispy, the fish is hot and juicy inside. Their chowder is also very good with big pieces of fish inside. It's more like a fast food joint, order from the counter then go find the seat. They will bring the food over if they don't have it right away. Line can be long and it might be tough to find seat. But people move in and out fast. This place is filled with locals. Also one reason is the price is really reasonable. read more

This place specializes in fish and chips and they really perfected it. The batter that was used had a doughy flavor that felt hearty and flavorful. The cod was fresh tasting and the chips were freshly made. The service was amazing considering they were extremely busy. We got our plates before we even finished paying. The establishment itself was crowded but had such a great vibe I can't be mad. It felt like a gem. read more

This place was recommended to me by my AirBnB host as a "classic" for fish and chips so I knew I needed to go. I had also made it my mission to try oysters while in Galway and you can't get more fresh than this- oysters from Galway bay caught that morning. I tried the oysters first and while they were DEFINITELY fresh, the texture is not for me and I only ended up eating two. The fish & chips, though, was very good. You order the fish and chips separately so you pick your fish (which you can get by itself) and then if you want chips, add them separately; which of course I did. I would not recommend mackerel unless you know you like it. It was HUGE and definitely enough for one person but isn't your typical fish used in a "fish and chips" dish. I would recommend cod or another white fish. Nonetheless, it was very good. Their tartar sauce is great and ketchup is at all of the tables. This place gets BUSY so if you have a large group, you might need to wait awhile as the inside is all seat yourself. Overall, the food was good so I rate it highly, but not the choices I would make if I were to go back. read more

Someone highly recommended this to us as the best fish and chips in Galway so we had to check it out. After everything I was told, I was actually a little disappointed. We were also recommended the fried haggis, so we got a order of that which I loved. We also got the fish skewer with chips which I wasn't that impressed by. We had better fish and chips elsewhere in Ireland. We went to the side where you order at the counter, find a seat, and they bring your food to you. The service was fast and the food was very cheap. All in all, I did enjoy my food, it just didn't quite live up to my expectations. read more

I have no idea why so many hotels, taxi drivers, bus drivers, etc...SWEAR that this is the best fish & chips. First the place is so tiny that you can't even move when seated at one of tables. Second, if you're ordering cod and chips please be aware that it's like fast food: the cod and chips are already cooked and just sitting under warmers and aren't cooked fresh. Same with the onion rings. Our onion rings were lukewarm and I took them back. Also, they CHARGE 2.10EUROS for tartare sauce! Absolutely unacceptable for a fish & chips place to charge extra for sauce that most people use. And a 6-ounce glass of soda is $2 EUROS! ABSOLUTE RIP OFF AND MUCH BETTER FISH AND CHIPS ELSEWHERE. Please, heed my advice and steer clear of this dump read more

The best fish and chips in Galway, if not all of Ireland! Belly up to the food bar to order and then take this fresh from the ocean, lightly battered fish and chips to your table and devour! Better get there early (6ish) to avoid the long lines! This gem in the heart of the city is a must for fish aficionados. My empty plate is my testament to the deliciousness of the food! read more

Magically battered and fried fish. They have iirc 8 different fish options. Prices are for the Fish only, you pay separately for the Chips. I ordered the Cod (came as 1 large piece), Ray (came as1 large and 1 med piece), and a large order of Chips (pretty big mountain of chips) for ~16 euros. The Cod was delicious, batter was nice and crisp without being too greasy and the fish inside was wonderfully moist and flaky. The Ray was good but i guess the flavor of Ray itself gets a bit overwhelming if you eat too much at a time. The chips were 50/50.... some pieces were hot and crisp while others were a bit stale. Overall it's an awesome Fish and Chips place. A bit stingy that they charge 0.60 for Tartar sauce though... read more

The food is great, if you want to have fish and chips, and you want it fast. The service is also good. The only reason that it doesn't get the full 5 stars is the environment. Due to its location, it's too busy all the time and you may need to share your table with others. So if you are looking for a calm place, you should not go there. But if you want fish and chips and want it fast, this is your place. read more

While visiting Galway, my favorite city in Ireland, we stopped in McDonagh's for a bite to eat for lunch. They were packed but the line moved quickly and the food came out fast. We each ordered a piece of cod and shared a large order of chips. The cod was flaky and breaded perfectly. A large order of chips was more than enough for two hungry people to share. For the price, the quality and the portion cannot be beat. So the next time you find yourself looking for a good fish and chips spot, try McDonagh's in Galway. read more

FNC are a frequented meal in the household so a visit to McDonagh's was a requirement when in town. The variety of different fish types was an interesting twist, with the required brown vinegar on the tables without needing to request it a welcome sight. We decided to try the classic cod and the smoked alternative as a novel aspect from the usual. In general, the fish was fresh, flaky and hot, and didn't seem just to represent aging preparations under heat lamps... probably because we were there when it was crowded and going at quite a clip. No matter. The tastes were very good, and although I wouldn't order the smoked fish again - too much of a traditionalist I think - I was glad I tried it. The cod was wonderful, and the brown vinegar truly made it happenin'. Portions and prices hit the mark as well. read more

I wanted oysters, boy did I want oysters. I read so many reviews looking for somewhere that had fresh oysters on the menu, and McDonagh's kept coming up. I was a little surprised that after finding it (really not that hard it's in the most touristy part of Galway) discovered it was basically a fish and chip place! Oh well. As they say when in Rome (or Galway). I ordered 2 doz oysters and the Hake. Fresh fish, fries that were as good as any I have had anywhere! I have eaten oysters all over the world I live on the east coast USA and can honestly say never have I tasted oysters as fresh and tasty as these. How good came back the next day for more! Yes it's a tourist dive, yes it's busy, yes you share a table with other travelers from all four corners of the globe, but I say it again, the oysters that have been touched by the hand of god are to die for! read more

Ok, unpopular opinion, I didn't love it. My partner's family who live in the Galway area swear by it and we just had to give it a try. Like any chipper, they are divey and greasy and a bit dirty. I didn't have a problem with that. In fact, I think it gives it an authenticity. I did like that it had ample seating and the service was quick and nonfussed. However, they DO NOT SALT THEIR FISH! I bit into the fish of my fish and chips and it was so bland. I was told that one is expected to salt it themselves but there was no salt on the table and I do not like tartar sauce. so it was super bland and the best part were the fries. I'm sure many people will like it and I do not discourage others from trying it themselves but I will not come back read more

Apparently the oldest fish and chips shop in Galway and several people recommended to me so I had to give it a try. I got the cod and chips with a side of tartar. Pros: Portions were huge for the price! Service was also very fast by Irish standards (this is because the fish and chips were already prepared and sitting under heat lamps). Plenty of seating and this is in a popular shopping area with a lot of foot traffic for interesting people watching. Cons: Cod was a little greasy and chips were under seasoned. Overall I'd recommend for a quick cheap lunch. Not the best food but definitely not the worst and prices can't be beat! read more
