I've done yoga, weight training, stretching. Everything helped a little and some techniques lasted longer than others. But when I had this last round of stubborn pain, I decided to try the Alexander Technique. Bette listens and tunes in to the unique problems of your body and lifestyle. She trains you to think about how you move in everything you do. You learn to let go of muscles you aren't using, how to walk, stand up, sit down and even sleep in ways that will allow ease for your body. First of all, it is quite exciting to learn how to finally have good posture effortlessly by using her visualizations and techniques. But I adapted quickly to all of her suggestions and have been without the chronic pain in my back and shoulder. I am very hopeful that these subtle shifts in movement will keep the pain away. She is a calm, knowledgeable person and her home studio is relaxing and pleasant. A former ballet dancer, she has a unique understanding of the subtleties of movement in the body. I highly recommend doing a set of sessions with her.
