I did a takeaway order, so I can't speak about the ambience, establishment or service. I got these as my order: Egusi with beef Pepper soup & plantain (beef) Red Stew Jollof rice Amala fufu First off, this is my first time having this cuisine! I've have Ethiopian food pretty regularly and that's been the extent of my culinary experience with African cuisine. So it was really cool trying something new from a different geographical locale within that realm. Unfortunately, it means I don't have anything to base my pallet experience on with this food so I can't compare it to anything I've had previous. But with that said everything arrived piping hot, tasted super fresh, the meats were incredibly tender, the spice levels were great, and it definitely feels like it's made with love. I think the red stew was my favourite and then the pepper stew was really, really great. Definitely had a kick of spice to it loved that! Egusi was really good, but it was definitely a new flavour to get used to and I think I might have to try it a couple more times. BUT that's not to say that any of the food I had was bad. Everything was fantastic even if it was very new for me! I really enjoyed the way of eating it too, a unique experience since my only previous was with Injera which is different. I actually perused their Instagram before ordering because I wanted to see some dishes and the chef (possibly owner too) making the food seems great and for sure seems it's made with care and love especially from the videos I saw of him cooking. I look forward to ordering new things next time I do order or mixing some things up with the order that I had previously done. Perhaps mix up the proteins and see how that changes the dishes. Really look forward to trying one with fish next! Anyway, this was a great new experience and if you're gonna get this cuisine, I think this is probably the place to do it. I know there's not many places in LA or near LA most since most seem be a bit of ways out of the city. But this one definitely I feel would be somewhere where if I did bring someone who knew the cuisine would for sure give a thumbs up. I really hope this place does well and gets more traction, which is partially why I wrote this. Well earned it's five stars!

2.5 My jollof cravings and homesickness led me here, but I honestly could've continued to do without. I ordered the jollof rice, plantains, and protein (beef) plate as a DoorDash order. The food came piping hot and in an insulated carrier so kudos to the restaurant for that. However it really lacked in areas with the flavor profiles. I personally don't think it had an authentic taste to it, just red rice and meat. Maybe it was an off day? The plantains were good but can't really mess those up unless you don't know what you're doing. The beef was really soft (I was hoping it would be fried meat and THEN sautéed but it seemed to be boiled) many other people I know probably wouldn't complain about something like that but it really matters when it comes to Nigerian food. Also as you can see there was a lot of onions, another preference thing which I wouldn't have minded if everything else was on point. On the plus side I felt it was an actually decent sized portion for the price and being in LA. The plate was packed and heavy! Oh I forgot I also ordered the zobo which came bottled. Nothing special. - @mealswithmaka

My first time ever trying Nigerian food & this place set the bar exceptionally high. My order was placed via Doordash & the pics of the food looked so good. I was apprehensive at first only because I'd seen reviews of other Nigerian food spots that just had bad reviews but this place is new & like I said, the pictures of the food looked so appetizing. I was unsure about a few things so before ordering I contacted the restaurant and spoke with a really nice guy who explained the meal contents & what to expect. He was really understanding about it being my first experience tasting Nigerian cuisine & made sure he showed me a great experience, so thank you Mayowa I ordered the fufu & egusi soup with mackerel fish as my protein option & let me tell you, it was absolutely AMAZING . The presentation was so on point. It comes fully packaged in a heat keeping pouch & my food was piping hot & super fresh. The mackerel was very meaty & fresh, the egusi soup was very tasty & a texture that fully embraced the culture (pounded yam) I admit, I've never tasted anything like this. I ordered for my wife & she has been craving it ever since. Now our 15yr old son wants to try it & I'm going to share this beautiful Nigerian culinary experience with him. The gentleman my wife spoke with at Mayowa was so kind as to throw in a taste of a drink called sorrel as a sample for our first time & it too was top tier. We as a family would personally love to recommend this place for anyone who is interested in trying Nigerian cuisine or continuing to support our African culinary geniuses Everything was amazing and we're looking forward to trying other things in the menu. Also, you can request your spice level if you wish. I didn't initially because I wanted to taste it in it's original form however I did add a bit of cayenne pepper later because I enjoy a bit more heat in my dishes, but no hot sauce as I didn't want to ruin the traditional flavors being presented to my palate however a little sprinkle of cayenne goes a long way. Please try this place out & support our African brothers & sisters. It's really worth it.

I drove from San Diego to LA for Chef Tanto's food. This is the best Nigerian food around. 10/10 Upon first bite, my eyes rolled back on my head. The jollof rice, beef and plantains was amazing! The yams&egg sauce is wonderful! The fried rice with the sautéed onions and peppers is delicious! Fried sweet potatoes- yes! The Zobo - I'd buy it in a gallon size, it's great!! Highly recommend Mayowa!! Chef Tanto's service is top tier. Good mood Nigerian food for sure!!!

S/O and I shared the vegan combo and dereq tibs, a pitcher of their infused water, an Ethiopian cream coffee, and a glass of palm tree (their arnold palmer). The food was fantastic. I loved every bite we had, especially the gomen (braised greens), cabbage and carrot, and the kik alicha. The dereq tibs, though? That was AMAZING. Tender beef, sweet stewed onion, the perfect amount of spice from the serranos. I loved that the dish is accompanied by senafich (a spicy, horseradish-y mustard) and mitmita (a DELICIOUS chili powder that I want to put on everything lol). The beverages were delicious, I love an arnold palmer and this one is probably the best i've ever had with their spiced tea. Their coffee was decadent and strong and perfectly balanced. And the banana split! I am not usually one for dessert but I knew I needed to try this and I'm SO glad I did. A symphony of textures and complex flavors. We may or may not have used our fingers to get the last bits from the dish. The place itself is like a little oasis from the hustle and bustle of the strip mall outside. Vibey music, beautiful furniture and decor, and all attention paid to the little details. Can't wait for them to reopen so we can come back!! Parking - strip mall was crowded, but street parking wasn't too bad to find.

The vegan combo came with a bunch of flavorful things like stewed red lentils, stewed yellow split peas, Ethiopian salad, et cetera. I'm not vegan, but I would have been more than satisfied with just the vegan combo as it was delicious and filling. The doro wat - spicy braised chicken with a hard-boiled egg - was tender and tasty. I thought the beef dish was even better. The beef pieces practically melted in my mouth. And everything went great with the injera, which had a spongy texture that I found absolutely pleasing. The service was also wonderful. Before our meal, our server performed a hand-washing ceremony with rose water. And after we finished eating, we were presented with wet towels to clean our hands. Throughout lunch, our server kept our glasses of water filled. This place is a small intimate spot with very few tables, so reservations are strongly recommended.

I had a wonderful time and found the food delicious! Our server helped us decide what to order as we are "older" adults and cannot eat too much at one meal. They have a good assortment of drinks to choose from. I had a glass of wine. They brought us large carafes of cold water, which was great to sip in-between courses. We had the Brik, Salads, B'Stilla, Honey Lamb, Lemon Chicken, Tea and Dessert. I liked everything - but I especially loved the Honey Lamb - and I don't usually like lamb! I wish I could include pictures here, but this type of food is eaten with your hands, so it was not possible to take pictures. (There is a hand-washing ceremony before eating, and even though I am somewhat of a "germaphobe", I was very comfortable eating without utensils after handwashing.) They do include forks with the courses if you prefer. If you look at the photos of the food on their web site, they are exactly how the food looks when you order it. The service was excellent. We had a main server who brought our courses and described in detail exactly what the ingredients were. And we had secondary server who kept our water carafe filled, brought other items as needed and cleared dishes. Service was perfectly timed, and the courses were freshly prepared and at the perfect temperature. We were there on a Saturday night, so a belly dancer performed as we were finishing, which was fun. We used Uber so we didn't need parking, but they have a parking lot right off Sunset with adequate spaces for guests. Moun of Tunis has been in this location since 1977, but I never knew. Will I go back? YES! Do I recommend this place? YES!

The food is really good. They have a salad which is portioned with minced carrots and rose water. As strange as that sounds, it was very unique and amazing. The population here can be hit or miss.
