I've had a great experience at Ruby Spa. You can schedule appointments via email and whoever manages the emails are very responsive - I've had responses at 10pm on a Saturday before. Jin is extremely professional, and the location itself is very nice. It isn't really a lavender and waterfall spa - the interior is very simple but Jin is very professional and generally awesome. Went here for the first time after buying a 1hr massage with hot stone on Groupon. Just FYI this is a small, no frills, straight to the massage kind of place. For the price I was perfectly fine with set up. I had gone on the weekend so the building was very quiet. My massage therapist looked at the paper I filled out and asked me a couple quick questions (was I sensitive to oil etc). She also asked me a couple times on her pressure which suited me very well and I really loved my massage. She was sweet and gave me the full 60mins. I liked not feeling rushed out of there! This is for the $30 60-minute massage package from Groupon-- I'm literally walking out the door of the best massage I've ever had. First off, I bought my groupon Friday and got my appointment Sunday. That never happens. Next, the location is great. Flatiron is so easily accessible. The office is in a commercial and residential building and it's very basic. I came 15 minutes early and filled out a quick form. After that and changing sheets from another massage, Jin started the massage at 1:10pm. We weren't done until 2:20pm. Wonderful. The pressure was amazing. She used hot stones on me (asked first) and it was honestly just amazing. Her phone went off at one point and she apologized immensely. Didn't bother me at all but she was so sweet. I would really really recommend this to anyone. Jin was amazing and worth way more than $30. I tipped her $20 because she deserved it. Horrible customer service. No working phone number to schedule appointments so customers must submit an online inquiry. I waited 7 days to get an email response to my inquiry. Then through 8 email exchanges, went back and forth on dates and appointment times. After 3 times being given a selection of dates and appointment times that were no longer available by the time I was able to respond, I was finally able to secure a 'tentative' appointment that would not be confirmed until I provided a Groupon voucher code, which I had already provided in my orginial inquiry. Completely frustrating and a waste of time which could all be avoided by being able to use the phone to make an appointment. Thanks to Groupon and Lifebooker there are many options for a good inexpensive massage. Pick a different one and avoid the headache. Update - After this message was originally posted, I was 'tracked down' by the manager to discuss. He even mentioned that he would be 'reaching out to Yelp' to find out who posted this review. By design, because I share an account with my husband, and in protection of my privacy, my yelp profile does not exactly match my actual name. As such, I was alarmed to receive an accusatory call, which was, in the Manager's explanation, a 'courtesy call' to ensure my satisfaction. Little courtesy was actually extended and instead we debated the language of this review. Perhaps the service providers at Ruby are good, but to me, dealing with this is more trouble than it is worth, so I have cancelled my appointment. I also take great discomfort in any business that seeks to penetrate privacy in our identity. A business is welcome to contact a user through yelp, or respond publicly. This is definitely one of NYC's hidden gems as it is a cozy and charming spa located in Koreatown! Good thing I bought a massage package on Groupon but even without one, I would continue to come as the massage I just received was absolutely fantastic. My massage therapist was Jin, who I believe is the only massage therapist for the spa. While this place is small, the service is outstanding. Jin had the right amount of pressure and was professional throughout. I believe I started my massage around 12:50 but my massage didn't end until 2:05pm AND I was late (MTA problems, ugh). She was kind enough to give me some extra which was very much appreciated. She is the sweetest! The prices are also very reasonable and include a discount if you book another appointment within a week's span. ($60 for a 60 minute massage, $50 if you come back within 7 days). The Ruby Spa is a great place to go to! I was a little bit late but they still honored my one hour of massage instead of taking it out of my time, which was nice. I had a Groupon so I was a bit skeptical about how they would treat me, but the staff were nice. Making an appointment was also easy. I just made the appointment online in a few minutes and I was done. The only problem I had was the person didn't focus on my lower back enough. I had written on the form that my lower back should be focused on but she didn't work on that part more than the others. It was just a full body massage. Overall, I would still come back. Here's the deal -- this is currently a VERY small operation. They put up a groupon deal and did themselves a great service, while also doing themselves a big disservice because they just don't have the man power to handle the huge overflow of business. Once we finally got our appointments scheduled, we had really great massages. She asked what kindof pressure I was looking for and was great at concentrating on the areas I had marked on the sheet ahead of time. Professional and strong. I enjoyed it. This is the best massage place ever! The decor and the concept of one massage at a time by only one masseuse gives a personal feel as against others spas that make it look more like a business. My, oh my! I had horrible back pain a few weeks ago and needed a massage ASAP! Groupon came to the rescue and I found a great deal for Ruby Spa. Bought it and booked a massage the same day a few hours later. How prompt is that?? A few hours later the same gentleman I'd booked the massage with texted me that they were running behind and asked me to come in an hour later. No problem... It was for the time I'd initially requested anyway so that worked out perfectly. I ended up being about half an hour late to the rescheduled appointment time and when I had arrived Jin wasn't quite done with her current client. No problem... I was late anyway so wasn't expecting them to be accommodating. Jin finished about 10 minutes later and apologized profusely. No worries I told her and she proceeded to give me an amazing massage... Although I'd have to say her attempts at ridding my back of knots was all for naught. Nothing against her awesome skills but my stress and knots are so deeply rooted she couldn't get rid of them if she gave my back a daily stomping. It'd be a miracle. Also, I have had a hot stone massage before and was not a fan. She definitely changed that! At the end, Jin notified me that due to them having to push back my appt time by an hour (despite my tardiness) her employer offered me half off the next massage. Sure enough, Jin's employer contacted me via email the next day offering just that. What a wonderful business! Btw, the place can be hard to find. Horrible customer service. No answering at the phone. Almost impossible to get an appointment in a reasonable timeframe. I finally got an appointment and I needed to cancel it for personal reasons. Sent an email 2 days in advance (no answer or confirmation for the cancellation), call them (no answer), sent text message (no answer)...I decided to go to the appointment anyway to no lose my money (bought a groupon) and no one was there, then I sent another text to inform them and they finally text me back saying they cancelled my appointment. 2 stars for the truly terrible customer service. They're nearly impossible to get in touch with - they "didn't receive" my email or don't answer the phone (and return the call days later). The fact that they're not open every day makes communication extremely difficult - by the time you respond to their email the appointment you want is booked. Honestly not worth the hassle. I do appreciate that they honored my expired groupon (though that wouldn't have been an issue if it didn't take me months to schedule...) I purchased a 50-minute massage voucher on Livingsocial after seeing that The Ruby Spa had good reviews on Yelp. It was also easy to book an appointment on their online system. Since I am a teacher and the school year just ended this past Wednesday, I wanted to book a weekend time slot as soon as possible and they had a lot of availabilities. They are located close to the Empire State Building, so they are accessible by many subway lines. They are located in a building with other offices, but it was easy to find their spa office from the elevator. The spa itself is small, and I liked that their small size means that they focus on one customer at a time. The room itself was clean and quiet. I had Jessica do the massage and she was wonderful. She asked about the health information I filled out on the form and she asked about what type of pressure I wanted. I requested that she focus on my shoulders and feet on the form, and I feel like she did a good job focusing on those areas. I would definitely recommend coming here and I would come back! read more

Massages are always a little bit of a crap shoot when you buy them from Groupon/Living Social/etc...but I decided to throw caution to the wind and grab this great deal for a 60 min hot stone massage on Living Social. The office is tiny, but impeccably clean and easy to find. They had me fill out a sheet about any allergies I might have, previous injuries, illnesses, areas of tension, etc....all the standard stuff. The massage room itself is small, but they dim the lights and play soft music in the background to give it a soothing ambiance. Now I don't know how to say this...but I'm almost positive that Jin (the message therapist) has magical properties in her hands. She asked me what kind of pressure I preferred and if the pressure she was applying was ok, but otherwise she was quiet and worked her magical hands into my aching muscles. I felt like a plate of wet noodles after she was finished with me, and the hot stones were the icing on an already delightful cake. Jin should be made a protected National Treasure. To sum it all up: This place is fastidiously clean, the staff are lovely, the massage was a religious experience, and it's super easy to make an appointment. I recommend it heartily! read more

I bought an annual membership off Groupon, and I'm usually really wary of beauty services on there, but I read all these reviews and decided to go for it, thinking I'd be spending $55 on a massage if I didn't get more than one, which was what I'd have spent going somewhere else. It's a tiny bare bones spa, but the masseuse Jin clearly knows what she is doing and has technique. Very nice firm and warm hands. I declined the hot stones, but she used just one stone which she placed on my belly while I was on my back and she was doing my arms - very thoughtful and a great feeling. May go back and try with all the hot stones. I would never pay the quoted "regular price" of $120, because for that price I expect a full day spa, with a robe, slippers, lounge, tea, sauna, showers, etc., and this place has none of those amenities, nor the feel of a spa. However, I don't believe they actually charge anybody this "regular price" (not sure why it's referred to at all), and for the actual price they charge (between $40-60 per massage, I think, depending on your package), it's well worth the price. read more

After seeing great reviews on Yelp, I got the Groupon for three massages and then I got excited. I scheduled my appointments via their website and received a confirmation e-mail almost immediately, although it was Sunday and they're not open on Sundays. I easily find the place and then the "office" itself. It is a little confusing, it's very office-like and there is also an acupuncturist, but the individual doors aren't marked. Unfortunately, there was a little confusion on The Ruby Spa's part about my appointment time and I had to wait. After about an hour, you can imagine that I thought "Ok, this better be amazing!" And it was! Jin was very sorry about the mistake and then gave me one of the best massages I've ever got. She took her time (I was there definitely for about 70 minutes), used hot stones (I had never tried before; she asked first if I wanted to try). Although the space itself is not very spa-like, you quickly forget about it once Jin starts with the massage: the mellow music blocks the noise from the street and Jin is so good at what she does that you don't care about anything else. As I was leaving, I wasn't angry about the time miscommunication at all anymore. The following day, I received an e-mail from The Ruby Spa apologizing once again: how nice of them! And did I mention they didn't charge me for the first massage? We all make mistakes, but their customer service is just as great as Jin's skills and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place. read more

I purchased a Groupon for this spa. You have to schedule your appointment through email and so there's a bit of going back and forth although Jin does answer fairly quickly. The other issue is that they have somewhat odd hours and morning appointments (which I prefer) are a bit hard to come by. The first appointment I had to reschedule since I was terribly ill. I was able to email her within the 48 hour time frame required; she didn't answer immediately but when she did, she was very polite about it. When I came for my rescheduled appointment, I first went to the wrong room; apparently they had changed rooms from what was on my Groupon although luckily it was in the same building. When I got to the proper room, no one was around. I had to wait nearly half an hour to start while Jin finished up with another client and then changed the room. The woman ahead of me seemed to be a regular client but I'm not exactly sure why she was running so behind. I'm glad that I hadn't scheduled something right after my appointment or I would have been in real trouble. The massage itself was excellent. In fact it was one of the best I've ever had. As I was leaving, Jin asked if I wanted to buy another massage at a discount good for that day only. I definitely would have if the customer service had been better. I think that once Jin is able to get her business off the ground, this will be an excellent place but for now it's such a small operation that I prefer to go to more established places. read more

Pros - super easy to make an apt with their online system. Location is pretty convenient. Cons - made an 11:20 appt and was told to come 10 mins early to do paper work as a first time customer. Arrived early and no one showed up till a little after 11:20. After paperwork was done, I was let to a room to undress which is prob about 11:30-11.35. Massage ended at 12:20. So I paid for an hour massage (via groupon) and got about 45 mins of actual service. In the middle - Had Jessica and the massage was fine (not great, but not bad). Perhaps Jin would have been better but when I came out, the other person was still being worked on and he started before me. So maybe it's just me. read more

The so called spa is in an office building with just two rooms with a small desk outside as front desk area. Very small area - A walk in area with chairs. Room has NO AC. only fans. freshly painted smell. Room is simple and crude. If you don't mind to have massage in a low end small place they do ok job. But you want to fall asleep in a nice setting place. This is definitely not a place to go. The massage feel like Swedish. One hot stone burned my back skin and left a mark on me. I had a great massage at this place - very memorable and very relaxing. LOVED the hot stones. Totally clean, easy to find, very nice staff, easy to schedule, skilled masseuse. My only piece of feedback was that it was SO BRIGHT. Usually massage places are dark and relaxing but this one was flooded with light. They don't have blackout curtains, so not sure if there's anything that can be done about it. However, really really loved the experience here and I will probably be back. I've been going to The Ruby Spa and seeing Jin for about two years now. I've had a lot of massages having spent a decade in Southeast Asia and I must say that Jin exceeds the expectations! Jin's technique is a mix of acupuncture, swedish, shiatsu, deep tissue, etc. It's a very rare combination and you'll have to just try it out for yourself. jin is an amazing masseuse and an incredibly sweet/kind person. i honestly don't go anywhere else for my massages. she always starts on time (if not early) and takes good care of you throughout the appointment (she always asks whether the pressure is OK, whether i am comfortable, etc). the manager, marty, is also incredibly friendly and kind. re: the location/scheduling: (1) the facilities are right on 32nd and 5th in a very clean suite. everything is super accessible. (2) they now have online booking, which makes scheduling really easy. since jin is the main masseuse, this isn't one of those places where there's a ton of last-minute availability -- i typically book my massages ~2 weeks in advance -- but it's definitely, definitely worth it. i've been going to jin for the past six months and just purchased another six-pack. i am so glad i found this place and i highly recommend jin to anyone! read more
