We took the skip the line and tour for the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. Christina our tour guide was beyond amazing!!!! First she truly was skilled at getting us around and past the the overwhelming crowds. Once inside her enthusiasm, knowledge, and presentation made the tour enjoyable and educational without overwhelming us with facts we would never remember. She pointed out small details and what to look for that made it very interesting. Christina has a gift to share and we were so lucky to get her as our gu

Someone approached us blocks away from the Vatican and said for 100 euros each we could skip the Vatican lines and have access to the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. That sounded pricey since Vatican skip the line tickets can be purchased through the Vatican online in advance for 16 euros. One block further someone approached and said for 50 euros each, and when someone approaches on the street and you're from Los Angeles you immediately think, 'run!', however, by the time we reached the Vatican the line was looking pretty hefty and the person near the line (knowing you've made it through several other people like them) has dropped the price to 35 euro. This was worth it, and this happened to be with this Maya tour group. If you're 26 or younger you should get this price anyway (it's the student price) and they do take credit cards and you do need to follow them a block or so to the main building to process the transaction where you'll join a group of like speakers and get a head-set and have a guide, usually Italian, show you the museum over a period of about two hours. This is also worth it as the Vatican advance purchase with audio (but no living, breathing guide) is about 24 euro. This would have bored me to death when I was in high school and made my first trip to Europe, as it did anyone under the age of 24 on this tour, particularly the three-year-old who used her headset as a pretend cell phone for most of the tour, but for the rest of us, we enjoyed. The only real thing to look out for is the price can be too high in the beginning, so keep walking until you get a price you're okay with and don't book online because then you can't get a lower price. After doing it, I'd say 50 euro is good for this tour, but no more. We got lucky with our deal of 35. The guides are funny and good. Also, make sure you get a working headset because some are old (I was one of two people in the group to get a bad one) and then I just had to stay right next to the guide so that I could hear. I'll say this about the Vatican: they've got a lot of stolen art up in there, but it is very beautiful.

He was personable, clear in his explanations, and attentive to our needs throughout the tour. What made it especially memorable was how he connected with our kids--getting them excited about gelato was a fun touch that they still talk about! The golf cart was a lifesaver, making it easy to visit several sites that would have been impossible to reach with a 5-year-old and 2-year-old in tow. We even opted for the cart to pick us up from the hotel so it was seamless from beginning to end. The car seat for our youngest was clutch. Actually the ride was so soothing that our 2 year old fell asleep for part of the trip. Chris also introduced us to the Roman Orange Garden, a peaceful spot we'd never have found on our own. While many sites in Rome are walkable, this tour gave us the freedom to explore comfortably as a family, and we truly appreciated the balance of convenience and insight. If you are someone who love to do all the research ahead of time, then maybe this tour is too surface level for you. I would recommend a more targeted tour for the Coliseum or Vatican City. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend LivTours--and especially Chris--for families looking for an stress-free way to experience Rome.

(Night Time Vatican Tour)…read more We really enjoyed the Vatican, but felt like our guide was rushing us while we were walking through. But the Vatican is big, so we assumed she wanted to show us other portions of the grounds. Our tour was supposed to go until 8 PM, but she ended things at 7 PM. She said we could walk back into the last wing of the museum to see things on our own but security would not allow us to walk back in. We spent seconds / maybe minutes, looking at whole sections of art. She left almost no time to stand and look at things, everything was "ok let's keep going". Although we still enjoyed things, we definitely left extremely disappointed given the cost of the experience. (We paid 318€ for two people to tour - 60€ was the cost of the tickets, so 258€ was the cost of the tour guide.
