I've heard about Chicago's dance history and I was looking forward to learning more about it. For me in particular, it was the hustle scene. It may not be as big as bigger cities (LA, NY) but I'm glad they had one. Here was my experience here. AMBIANCE: It's in more of a suburban area of Chicago. Relatively close (15 minutes) away from the airport and from downtown. The place itself is on the 2nd floor of a building. It seems like a pretty historic brick building with a spacious layout. The layout is basically one big floor to dance on with ceiling lights and string lights to bright up the place. The class consisted of a lot of talented 40+ which was cool as they had a lot of knowledge to share. The size is great for group practices and socials. Parking - Pretty much just street parking. Customer Service - Awesome! My instructor was Dawn Lara and she was great! Knowledgeable and friendly. I felt pretty welcomed in this place. TL;DR OVERALL 4.5 Stars. I had a great experience here! The instructors were awesome and my classmates were pretty fun. One of the main things for me was always feeling will people be condescending and whatnot, but the vibes were pretty welcoming here. This was a good start to learning more about the dance community and scene here in Chicago, I just wish I stayed longer to learn more! It's not a bad place. It's fun. Mostly older crowds, which is ok. 40+ at socials. Few leads in the advanced class I attended, but more leads at socials (not pros). Most leads either sit or leave early. Yes you rotate. but many are beginners. Many teachers are female not male. They need to hire a male instructor. This studio is a great place to social dance and have a good time in general. They offer a huge variety of classes, really it's almost too many to list, but you can see them all on their website. I recently moved to Chicago from San Diego with my girlfriend and we were looking for a studio where we could continue dancing and learning. A friend familiar with Chicago recommended May I Have This Dance, and we were happy that they did. We try to take as many classes as we can, so far I've taken Waltz, East Coast Swing, Hustle, West Coast Swing, and Zouk. The instructors are awesome, they break everything down in detail and repeat anything that wasn't clear , as well as answering any questions that you might have during class. Oh, did I mention they have a social events every weekend? They're structured so that if you've never taken a lesson there you can still come a little early and take a miniature lesson or two so that you can join in on the social dancing later. I've seen loads of people bring their friends or dates to these and they always seem to have a good time :) Anyway, if you come here you won't regret it. He did a great job teaching some period line dances featuring moves from the Temptations and more! And, since we did this on 9/21, we had to get In Earth, Wind, and Fire :) Brandon really brought the crowd together, was able to reach people with all levels of skill, and was incredibly professional. My fiancee and I got a birthday gift for a series dance. We attended the Zouk class they offered. If it's your first time, go upstairs and open the door on your left. It my seem odd, but that's the way. The door in front is the office door. Do not scare the staff! I really liked this place for many reasons. First, they are clean, well-lighted, and have a huge space. I'm sure most studios are but there are some that are not, so I am glad they are. Two, the staff are friendly and accommodating. I love that they don't make you feel unwanted or unwelcome for being newbies. They are really there to teach people to dance. The instructor we had was great. He started the Zouk class in the studio and he has been dancing for years. And even though this was a group class, he allowed my fiancee and I to dance together the whole time. He also gave people enough personal attention to teach us properly and correct our mistakes. He wasn't overbearing or a perfectionist and he really made it just a fun experience. I would definitely come back here for other classes. They also offer a lot of different dancing styles and some free events which is great to practice your moves ;) read more

I've been taking classes here for over two years and have nothing but good things to say: the instructors are incredibly talented, classes are well structured, and staff/management is extremely friendly and helpful. May I makes learning how to dance really simple. I've found their programs allow you to advance at your own pace. For example, you can take private lessons to advance faster or re-take a same level class to reinforce more basic skills. I started from scratch on several dance styles and their system has worked great for me! I can now confidently dance on weddings or other events and it is so much fun! I came to May I with very basic ballroom dance knowledge from park district and college classes. The plethora of dance styles (ballroom, Latin and swing) I learned at May I took my dancing to another stratosphere (evidently these classes boosted my self esteem, too). I attended classes throughout the week and practiced what I learned at their social dancing events (primarily Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays). Classes are taught on a rotation basis, but you can skip the rotation if you're learning with a dedicated partner. Rotation helps you learn how to lead/follow with a number of partners of varying skill levels. While you will learn patterns for respective dances, you will also learn proper posture, the fundamentals of what makes each dance work and how to connect with your partners. Leads will learn how to communicate their intentions on the dance floor and follows will learn how to read these signals. A message for future leads - sometimes you'll flub a step or your partner might have misread your cue - regardless, always take the blame. It's the gracious gentleman thing to do and it'll go a long way to putting your follows at ease. As your dancing improves, your confidence improves and you'll reap the benefits outside of dancing. I have found this studio to be incredibly welcoming, the staff incredibly encouraging and knowledgable, and most importantly, they work hard to make sure that MayI is a safe space for dancers to work on their craft. I'm grateful that people like Nino DiGuilio takes the time and effort to listen to their students and work hard to remove problematic people from the studio to improve the experience for all. Dance is a vulnerable artform and requires mutual respect from all parties involved. I love the Zouk classes and Zouk dance parties the best - but Swing on Sundays and their TGIF parties are a close second. If you've ever been to Chicago's Summerdance festival, or any major local dance competition, you've probably met the great instructors and students of May I Have This Dance. OR...if you've passed by the grade school by Holy Name cathedral on your way to the Chicago red line stop, on a Monday night, you might have peered into the windows to see people dancing. May I offers classes at Holy Name Cathedral on Monday nights, classes at the Willowbrook ballroom and Beverly Arts Center, and will soon be offering classes in various Chicago Park Districts. Classes are built so that you rotate and dance with a lot of different people - which improves your technique markedly. Every first, third and fifth Friday of the month are TGIFs, the nights when you can dance just about any type of ballroom dance (see the list I mentioned at the top). LOVE it. Lesley says it all, but I'd like to add a couple of things... specifically about their TGIF Dance Parties, that are held on the 1st, 3rd, and if there is one, 5th Friday of each month, at the Elston location. In my opinion, the real beauty of these TGIF dance parties (and I'm sure the other get-togethers they have, but I've only attended TGIF) is that everybody and everything is all about DANCING. It's not a bar, it's not a pick-up joint, no one is drinking or worse yet, drunk. Everyone is friendly and cordial, the staff is SO helpful, and the atmosphere is always one of respect, no matter if you are advanced or just beginning. And everyone gets a name tag, so no introductions are necessary! I recently went with two of my girlfriends -- we are all married, but we went without our husbands, who really don't like to dance -- and we all felt very comfortable there. In fact, we had a blast, and we're making plans to go back in a month. Price can't be beat for TGIF -- $15 for the lessons (two 30-minute sessions) and the party itself. Lots of free parking in the neighborhood, with no meters and no permits necessary. There's also a lot, but you've got to get there early to get a spot. The new location for the TGIF parties is far superior to the original studio location in Edison Park. Bright and well-lit, spacious, and with cranked air conditioning that kicks butt in the summer! As a woman who is tired of leading... I LOVE TGIF! The woman to man ratio is still a little out of sync, I'd say about 3 to 1... But the men there really do like to dance and dance well, so most are available and willing to get on the floor (it's OK ladies to ask a guy to dance), and the staff always makes the rounds to invite any women holding up the wall to dance. And it's a treat to just watch too -- so many fantastic dancers on the floor at all times. Personally, I learn a lot just from watching. They throw the occasional "theme" party... The night we went, it was wedding, and it was so fun! Staff was dressed up as the wedding party, they had wedding cake and some snacks, and we did a lot of "wedding"-type dancing (the Electric slide, "snowball") and that was a nice change of pace. Just a few tips for TGIF -- bring a bottle of water and a towel in a bag, because you WILL dance a lot, and it's almost like being in an aerobics class. Bring comfortable dance shoes for the studio, and an extra pair of comfy flats, for walking to the car or in case your feet get a little sore. A sweater doesn't hurt, as it can be a little cool in between dances. I also make sure I have a "dance purse" -- a small thing with the essentials that I can sling over me... Not that people can't be trusted, but I always like to have my purse near me. If you like to dance, don't miss out on ANY of "May I Have This Dance" special outings and offerings! And by the way... someone in the staff said that KIDS have attended the dance and are welcome to come. It IS a little more adult oriented, but if the child is mature and likes to dance, he or she is welcome! He said there was one family in particular that made it a family outing and went to it on a regular basis. Hence the reason I am saying this is "Good for Kids" -- not all kids, but I think teens 14 years and up who are serious about dancing would love it as well. read more

Nino, the primary instructor, is an amazing teacher. Have two left feet? Not a problem here! He and his staff can help you turn that around in no time. Trust me - I've watched it happen on a number of occasions! They teach both group courses and privates, which are held not only at their main studio but also at a satellite location, Glendora. Don't have a date? That's not a problem either. Rotation is a key part of their classes; giving you a chance to be social (hence, Social dancing) and get to know your fellow dancers' styles. Just another step in making you a better dancer. Nino also offers open dance nights on Friday (T.G.I.F.) and Sunday (S.O.S./Swing on Sunday) nights. These, I would say, are the best attributes of the studio. Once you start learning the dances, you can get out there and start showing off what you know! I started taking lessons here two years ago. I am a pretty shy person. It was a big step for me just to talk myself into trying the place out. When I finally did, I never wanted to leave. You will simply fall in love with this place, and if you never danced a day in your life, they will have you falling in love with dance as well. This is the place to go to if you want to learn a variety of social dances and have fun doing it. Everyone there, from the instructors and staff, to the other attending dancers, will make you feel welcome. This place is not like other dance studios. No one is walking around trying to sell you private lessons. They are big on doing group lessons here, and you don't have to have a dance partner to come here. Everybody rotates partners here. It's the greatest way to have fun with and meet a lot of new interesting people. On Fridays and Sundays they have dance parties where you can learn a couple of steps in a dance or two, followed by a few hours of dancing to your heart's content. They teach pretty much every social dance that you can think of (salsa, bachata, west coast swing, hustle, foxtrot, waltz, tango, rumba, cha cha, samba, quickstep, lindy hop, east coast swing/jitterbug, etc etc). They even touch some fun things like line dances, zumba and Thriller at Halloween. They offer one hour workshops, 4 hour month long 'series' and sampler classes. They make it easy to try new dances without being stuck forever in a class that you end up not liking. Personally, there hasn't been a class there that I haven't liked yet. Approximately 3 years ago, I stumbled into May I Have This Dance and I have not regretted it. Not only have I learned many dances at affordable prices, but the studio is inclusive and makes you feel safe. Every single teacher is excellent. So much so, that the students wanted to show appreciation to the teachers because they are so loved by the students. You can go to other studios and learn similar ballroom dances but you cannot manufacture the family and non pretentious culture and atmosphere of the studio. If you're new to dance and don't know how but always wanted to try it out, I recommend you come to one of the dance party that takes place on Fridays and Sundays. The people will welcome you and are willing to dance with newcomers. I attribute this to Nino DiGuilo, the owner of the studio. He's caring, passionate and professional. As someone running a dance studio, he understands that learning to dance, and attending social dance events should always be a safe space for attendees. Just returned to May I after a 4 year hiatus. I forgot how great this studio is and how fantastic the staff is too. My financee and I had taken a few lessons when we first started dating. We recently decided to begin lessons again and mistakenly went to a different franchise studio that was nothing but pressured sales and expensive, short lessons. So we came back to May I. I just got married. My spouse and I took private lessons here for the better part of a year in order to learn to dance as a couple and to prepare for our first dance. We wanted it to be more than a 30 second sway. We had some trepidations because neither of us are trained dancers and because I am lead but shorter than my spouse. Any anxiety about lessons was immediately banished thanks to Stephanie. From the moment we walked in, Stephanie was encouraging, fun, and kind. Her teaching is so clear and well thought out. We spent months learning basic technique and then eventually started to work on our first dance. Stephanie--being the expert--choreographed it, but was open to some input about the choreography. She also worked with my crew of family and friends on a flashmob to surprise my spouse. There were people of all ages and abilities in my crew and she was great with all. Nino has cultivated a really nice atmosphere here. The instructors are all very professional, helpful, open, and friendly, and there isn't the kind of snobbery you sometimes encounter in ballroom dance situations. They have the most affordable private lessons around, and the private lesson packages are definitely worth the money. The group classes are fun too, but you'll learn more quickly doing privates. The space is wonderful. As a swing dancer, most other dances I attend are awfully hot and crowded; dancing at this place is a luxury, with lots of space and really fantastic air-conditioning (even if it feels like a meat locker when you first arrive!) The location is a bit out of the way for me, but overall it has been really worthwhile taking lessons here. I've taken classes with Blake (swing, lindy) and Nicole (salsa), and they are both awesome. I have tried a few dance studios but nothing feels like home as May I Have This Dance Studio. A friend introduced me to the studio a few years back and I became a regular immediately. The studio offers a large variety of classes which kept me interested in learning more and more. The teachers and staff are so friendly. They remembered your names and even what you learned from their classes. They kept each class size small and personable. I didn't know anyone else and was quite intimidated by many great dancers but the students and teachers both made me feel welcomed and even asked me for dances during social dancing.
