Not always an easy task, especially when docs themselves have bosses to answer to. The whole health system can be hard to navigate for all of us. As such, I did have a miscommunication with Dr Tarpley, through no fault of either of us - just one of those miscommunications that can happen to us all, despite best intentions. Much to his credit, when he was alerted to my concerns he took the time out of his weekend and a special family celebration to call me and we were able to discuss my medical issues. He also made sure that from here on out I know exactly how to get in touch with him. He did not "need" to call me as promptly as he did, but he made the time. When you call the office, your call is handled by a third-party answering service whose only function appears to be taking messages. If you need to speak directly with the office, it is nearly impossible, as they will not transfer your call to the appropriate staff member. More concerning was a recent experience involving my brother. He had an appointment and was evaluated by the doctor. During the visit, it felt as though I had to repeatedly provide information and guidance regarding his care. After the examination, my daughter, who accompanied us, immediately asked my brother to wash his hands because she noticed dried blood on the examination table where he had been sitting. This is completely unacceptable. Exam rooms and examination tables should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between patients. The blood was clearly visible along the side of the table and should have been noticed when the paper covering was changed. It gave the impression that basic cleanliness and patient safety protocols were not being followed. I am extremely disappointed and disgusted by this experience. As a longtime UCLA patient, I expected a much higher standard of care, cleanliness, and attention to patient concerns. I sincerely hope this feedback is taken seriously and that steps are taken to improve both patient service and infection control practices.

Well, I did not even get past the person who answered the phone! She picked up the phone like she was answering her phone at home! I said "hello" just to make sure someone was on the line because all I noticed was that the recording had abruptly stopped. I said hello again because I thought I heard someone respond but I was not sure since again, the voice was was muffled. She practically yelled at me, definitely snapped at me and said HELLO CAN I HELP YOU!? I said "Oh hello, sorry I did not know if someone was there I can barely hear you" I can't recall what she said but her tone was abrasive and she was not helpful, she just sounded like a miserable front desk clerk that hated her job and just wanted to get through with the day! Well, I am a person who is unwell, the last thing I need is a rude person as a gatekeeper to the improvement of my health (I called at 3:14 on May 7th in case the business would like to try to track down who this person is) this definitely had a chilling effect on me and I doubt I would even care to try and call again. I really don't care to deal with mean people, especially if I DO like the doctor, since then I would have to deal with this person more!! I actually asked the person on the phone "why are you speaking to me this way? you sound like to are trying to get me to hang up and all I said was that I could barely hear you." she just said she was only trying to help and she immediately tried changing her voice to a friendly tone. To the business: I just want to point out that I used to work in a VERY busy, VERY successful doctor's office for almost a decade and the people who answer the phone are integral to the success of a practice! If you need to pay someone more, give them more benefits, FIND SOMEONE ELSE that is possibly younger, fresher and more pleasant who appreciates their job, so be it, it's worth it. The demeanor of the secretary or receptionist is the first thing patients will encounter besides these reviews. It's unfair to this practice to have unpleasant people ruining an experience before it begins. I want to hear an inviting voice, I want to see a smiling face and I want to feel at ease. Dr Kissel actually went with my father to the surgury. They found internal bleeding. Dr Kissel is a great doctor! He will NOT tell you what you want to here, he'll tell you the truth. I was dreading for weeks --- to get my blood drawn as I HATE needles!…read moreMy doctor is in the Torrance Physician Physician Network. They have several blood draw locations including one in Manhattan Beach which was just 10 minutes from my home. GREAT HELP from 'Claudia' -- she schedules the appointments. I called her multiple times as I had several "nervous-type questions" to ask. Claudia was very sensitive to my being a "needle chicken" and she was patient and professional in answering all my questions. In particular, I thank Claudia for recommending that I see either "Ruth" or "Amy" for the blood draw as they are the most experienced. FINALLY, the BIG day came! When I arrived, both Amy and Ruth were there to greet me as they had been notified in advance by Claudia of my particular situation. BOTH Amy and Ruth guided me immediately upon my arrival to the draw station. They were both so kind ... so sweet ... so understanding ... as I made my preparation (headphones over my head with LOUD music) for the 'BIG STICK' into my arm. But but but but ... it was ... N O T H I N G! It was a tiny tiny tiny prick and the whole procedure (3 vials of blood) was done ... comfortably ... in under one minute! Bless Claudia, Ruth, and Amy for their caring hearts!
