His calm manner, kindness, and genuine concern for each of us--myself, my wife, and our now-grown children--have meant more than words can express. Dr Hawkins had been my primary care doctor for 35 years. He took over for another doctor that had to retire. I am saddened that he has retired. His quiet mannerisms and friendly smile fitted him well. I feel like I've lost a family member. He would always talk with me about other things. He gave great advice. Dr. Hawkins was a really caring physician. Dr. Hawkins took great care of my health with his knowledge and guidance. The years I spent under his care were just amazing, and I never had second thoughts about his care and that's because he spoke with me not to me about my care. Not only was he was a great listener, but he actually spent time with me to make sure I understood what we were doing not what his was doing. When I heard about him retiring I had mixed feelings and I was so lost because I no longer had my safety net. Dr. Hawkins and his entire staff are nothing short of superb. I moved to the area in 2009 and he has been my PCP ever since then. Plain and simple, I wouldn't even consider seeing anyone else. Again, the support staff also deserves a ton of credit. They have been responsive, caring, professional, and helpful with each interaction over the years, and that's not easy with cranky/sick people around you all day! I figured an appointment at 7:30am is a safe bet to not have to wait too long, right? It turns out the office was locked until 7:40, and then I sat waiting for another 45 minutes. Not friendly staff and CNN Health on the tv disguising big pharma marketing as medical advice is tiring. Dr. Hawkins is competent and has a good bedside manner but is clearly over-worked. I feel bad trashing him because he seems like a good doctor, but his office and staff really make this a rough experience. read more

He moved to a new location without any notice to his patients. I have a medical problem that needs attention today...not in a week. According to his new medical partners, all of his patients are "new to them" and as a result are relegated to the back of the line when it comes to importance. Hawkins is a nice doctor who insists upon surrounding himself with the rudest, most inadequate staff I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. On my first visit to his PCH office in 2007, I signed a confidentiality form allowing my medical records to be released by my previous doctor to Dr. Hawkins. The staff, who couldn't take the time of day to turn their heads, eventually took this sensitive form from me and LOST IT. Lost it. These are two isolated incidents in a chain of rude, disappointing behavior I have experienced in past years. For the most part, I have my specialists write any extra prescriptions for me that I might require for allergy medication, etc. Hawkins has now made himself even less accessible in his move to the new office. If you get sick, make sure you plan to get sick one week in advance, otherwise, just go to Urgent Care. I don't understand the health care in the South Bay at all. AT ALL. Nice doctors use horrible, rude "medical billing specialists" to deter you from ever using their services. Bascially, you are overpaying for health care because HEALTH CARE IN THE SOUTH BAY IS AN OXYMORON! Do not waste your time with this GP unless you want to be made to feel like a 3rd class citizen from a person with a year's community college education. read more

I agree with pretty much all the reviews I've read on the net about this office. The Good: - Dr. Hawkins seems like a competent doctor and I've always trusted his diagnosis and treatment. He also has a good bedside manner and from time to time will even tell you some interesting and funny stories. Not living in the South Bay any longer, I shall miss these. The Bad: - The place looks like a free clinic. I think someone else said this too. - The staff here isn't friendly at all, especially the Asian girl at the front desk who always seems to be in a bad mood. - While you wait 20 minutes for your appointment, you are subjected to Big Pharma ads on their TV that play over and over and over. I found this very annoying. If Hawkins had a better staff in a better office, I'd give more stars. read more

Been a patient of Dr Hawkins for 6 months. Liked him when I had my physical. Extremely disappointed when I called today to get an appointment for my bad cold and trouble breathing. Spent 30 minutes on hold only to be told the earliest I could see a doctor would be in three days on Wednesday. Not acceptable! Found an urgent care to goto, providence medical group. Took 2 hours but saw a very nice Dr Angelo and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Got my prescriptions and feel better already. Glad I didn't wait 3 days. Dr Hawkins has been my primary physician for a few years. He is patient, listens and explains health issues and treatment. During this past year of going through cancer treatment he was the only non egotistical doctor I had who actually helped when I needed medicine to help with some of the side effects of cancer treatment. Everyone on his staff is very kind and helpful, Griselda has been very helpful in getting me referred to a specialist. I really do like Dr Hawkins. He has a bedside manner that is hard to find. He never rushes out of the room. He makes sure his patients feel heard and complete. Often asking if there are any questions He goes above and beyond in customer service. But like other reviews - I agree the staff is HORRIBLE. The receptionist took it upon herself not to allow any further refills on my prescription- until I seen the doctor. Well I no longer have insurance. So they wanted over $100 just to see Dr Hawkins. She refused to ask doctor for just a few days of medication till I could get the money together. They were rude- not willing to try to help at all. I explained the risk of having a seizure if I suddenly stop the medicine. They could care less. I won't go back and it's sad. Dr Hawkins deserves better staff. read more

I have visited Dr Hawkins every several years or so over the last 20 years. He has always been friendly and professional. I seldom go to doctors because I won't take prescriptions unless I have something life threatening like pneumonia, but when I do I have full faith in his abilities and care. Beware of this office. Dr. Hawkins seems to be a mildly competent doctor, but he is clearly overworked. A month turnaround for appointments. Long wait times in the office. One example: I was instructed by his office to take a sample to a nearby lab in Hermosa Beach and I'd have results in 3-5 days. Weeks later, I hadn't heard anything from the lab or from Hawkin's office so I followed up. They hadn't yet received results. I waited another week. Still nothing. Once again, I followed up. The nurse ("Yadera") said the lab had lost the sample! I asked why no one bothered to contact me since so much time had passed. She said "Dr Hawkins has over 100 patients and he gets very busy." So that's an excuse to ignore the well being of your patients? Until Hawkins decreases his patient load to something more manageable, I'd steer clear from this office...where clearly you are a NUMBER. One more thing, he referred my wife to an orthopedist to examine her injured foot. She questioned him about this because podiatrists examine feet, not orthopedists. Hawkins firmly said she should see the orthopedist and not question his expertise. Sure enough, when she called the ortho to schedule the appointment, the orthopedist said he couldn't help her and she needed to see a podiatrist! It's sad when you are more informed than your doctor! read more

went to dr hawkins for a chirping in my ears and he said it was probably some hearing loss, and then prescribed valium. really?? so i went to an ear specialist who tested me for hearing loss and told me there was none. bc of my hmo plan and dr hawkins being my primary physician, he needed to approve my ear specialists' treatment plan. the ear specialists mailed and faxed the letter to dr hawkins office and they lost all the letters. calling to dr hawkins office is also a joke. hold for 45 minutes while his staff rudely ask you what you want, then put you on hold, then someone else picks up and you have to re-explain what you're holding for. three people later, you may or may not get someone who knows where to look for your answers. the place itself looks and feels like a free clinic. and i hate dirty, smelly bathrooms. the toilet seat was speckled with dried up urine dribbles. there were at least 7 other urine samples behind the cubby door in the bathroom when i left a sample. how is this not a chain of custody or health issue? not to mention it stunk bad like the samples had been there for hours. lastly, they are closed for 2 hours over the lunch break. i mean really? the office could stand to be better managed. i would suggest that dr hawkins's office is great for his walk-ins if you have a common cold or something basic. but for anything more complicated than that, see another doctor. read more
