I've been getting work done by Chris W of Maximum Tattoo for almost a decade. I know him very well. and suffice it to say that after a sleeve, stomach piece, and an award worthy evil dead piece, he will be tattooing me for many years to come.
he made his bones a long time ago in the trenches of the city and decided to move on to new opportunities and challenges. he made his new home here at Maximum Tattoo where he continues to deliver to a very loyal and solid base of clients that have followed him to the new shop. I've referred many friends and family members to him, and because he never fails to exceed expectations, the trend of referrals continues all the way down line. (Chris, if you're reading this, I might ask for kickbacks somewhere down the road, ha.)
my job has taken me all over the country, and I've had many opportunities to receive work elsewhere--Seattle, Atlanta to name a few, but I've always decided to fly back to Illinois to work with Chris at Maximum Tattoo because the quality of his work is simply unparalleled. a quick look through his portfolio on the Maximum Tattoo site will serve as evidence that his diligence over more than a decade of tattooing has made him one of the most well-rounded artists out there. and still, Chris strives to acquire new skills on a daily basis and is always seeking ways to elevate his craft. I've thrown plenty of challenging pieces and ideas his way, and his creativity and honesty never falter. if something can be done differently, or in a better way, Chris makes sure I'm aware of all options but ultimately leaves the decision up to me, and in turn, I try to give him as much artistic freedom as possible. I can always trust his judgement. this is extremely vital to the process, with ANY artist, at ANY shop, so take heed.
remember folks, this is a shop of very experienced, talented, professionals. not screen-printers. there is a reason why the shop isn't full of 20 hacks that come and go and only a few professionals. the owners, Phil and Beth, are selective with their artists, and that is hard to come by in shops these days. they want to ensure that the clients of Maximum Tattoo are receiving the absolute best work possible. pay a visit to their Facebook page or their website and have a gander at the combined works of the artists. it will speak for itself. you will not be disappointed. the shop is very well maintained, nothing but the best and sanitary equipment, and parking is PLENTIFUL. no drifters, tweakers, or pan-handlers loitering in front of the shop--ha, always a good thing. Chris W is the man, as stated before. I've only met Katie once, but she was very welcoming and her work is super badass. I've met the owners before, and have seen them in action, Phil and Beth, and they are both very solid and very experienced professionals who have successfully established a highly reputable shop.
when you're at the shop--with the motorhead and misfits jams in the background, Chris's hilarious anecdotes, a helluva crew of artists, and world class art, you know you'll be a lifer at Maximum Tattoo. read more
