Cut Price Discount Stores is an unpresuming Aladdin's Cave of bargains! This independently run…read morestore is situated directly opposite Aldi Supermarket on Bristol Road, Northfield Town Centre. The inside of the shop is nothing fancy time looks as though it has stood still here for a long time. However, the shop is packed with nearly every conceivable household item you could imagine (excluding furniture and appliances). If you are familiar with Latif and Sons in Birmingham City Centre, think of this shop of a condensed version of the same type of store. Another way of describing it is as 'Northfield's General Store' - everything from kitchenware, cleaning products, garden, diy, computer and automotive accessories are in stock at very reasonable prices. I managed to buy a bunch of last minute Christmas presents here this last year and I had never thought a shop on Northfield could offer such choice, quality and value. The couple who run the shop are lovely too; very friendly. Also, If there is something you are after and they don't stock it, they are happy to source it for you. Often I have bought items from larger stores and supermarkets only to find the same products sold here at a cheaper price. I now usually pop in and check here first if I am after something in particular before shopping around It saves the disappointment! Definitely recommended, especially if you are setting up home and need a local, independent shop to buy the basics!

It's sells everything the house whole needs from cleaning stuff to garden stuff, things for back to school, anything to do with the kitchen and a whole range of DIY gear. It's not a fancy shop it's more of a stack it high and sell it cheap but the castle square would be lost without shops like this for the locals that's for sure

Smash & Grab in Weoley Castle used to be an absolutely excellent shop, but in recent years has gone…read moredownhill and is nothing special any more. The range of body care products is still very good and well priced with most items costing just 99p, but almost everything else they stock is boring tat which tends to be poor quality. The store is well laid out and quite large with plenty of shelving units and racks, if only they'd pack it with more interesting and useful stock then it would once again be a wonderful place to shop. As it is they sell appalling quality kitchenware (the enamel comes off after the first use), useless storage boxes made of low grade card, washing up liquid that doesn't bubble and uninteresting looking novels that no-one wants to read. As I mentioned above the cosmetics side of things is great, they stock body lotions, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, handwash and anything else you might want to buy to look after yourself. They even sell pregnancy tests, which amazed me as no way would I trust the result of a pregnancy test which costs less than £1 for a twin pack! My fella has bought DIY equipment and tools from Smash & Grab but always complains at what bad quality they are once he tries to use them. I know you're not going to get a top notch tool for £1.99, but if you buy a hammer you don't expect the head to break off after banging in a nail or two. He thinks the sandpaper is good, but you can't really go wrong with that can you? The staff in Smash & Grab aren't great, they're friendly enough but it annoys me that a lot of the time they are too busy chatting to the person in front to notice that a queue is forming. Last week the girl kept me waiting so long that I just put my basket down and walked out because there is no excuse for ignorance like this.

Domestiks is an ex-catalogue shop in Fairfax which is known locally for its excellent range of…read morestock and fantastic prices. From the outside it doesn't look very big, but once you get through the door you'll soon realise it's a massive shop which holds absolutely loads of stock. The main things Domestiks sells is clothing. It's all well arranged by style and size, obviously because it's an ex-catalogue shop you have to take pot luck of whatever they have at any one time but there are always a very good selection in sizes 8 to outsize. I think the childrens clothes in particular are excellent, there is a brilliant choice in the baby clothes right up to stuff for the more discerning teenager. I regularly pop in to buy my 17 month old daughter some stuff and the items available are of the highest quality and very up to date. The ladies clothes are superb too; smart suits, jeans, jumpers, swimming costumes and summer dresses jostle for space on the rails. Everything is clearly laid out in size order and I find the sizes to be very accurate so I can go in and pick something off the rail and be confident that it will fit when I get it home. There isn't much choice in mens clothing to be honest, but I assume this is because men don't buy so much from catalogues hence less stock returned. My fella did buy a very smart suit from here recently for a works do we had to attend, the suit was marked up as costing £115 in the catalogue but he paid only £40 for it and it's in brand new condition and even had the little plastic clips on the suit jacket cuffs which suggests it hasn't even been tried on! This saving is typical of Domesticks, on smaller clothing items you can expect to save a few pounds but it's the more exclusive items that are most drastically marked down. They also have baskets of socks, tights, underwear and t-shirts which generally cost around £1 - £1.50, it's worth having a rummage through these baskets as there are often some brilliant savings to be found. As well as clothes Domesticks sells a range of homewares, toys and shoes. I personally don't think the shoes are good as they always seem to be very old fashioned and some of them don't really look new. The toys are great though and I often go in before Christmas and birthdays to see what I can pick up for the kids'. Just this morning I went into Domestiks and bought my baby daughter a rocking horse which originally would have cost me £75 but had been reduced to just £25! Bargain, and she'll absolutely love it. You can buy a small selection of watches and clocks here, they are all very nicely priced although I don't really have anyone to buy these things for - my 12 year old is coveting a Playboy clock for her bedroom so I might just go and buy one of those before Christmas. I'd definitely recommend Domestiks to anyone living in South Birmingham who can get to Fairfax, the sheer range of clothes makes this my first port of call whenever I am going clothes shopping because the savings to be had are amazing and the range of clothing is at least as good as any other clothes shop!

That said, Bish Bash Bosh does sell literally everything, whereas Woodbridge Hardware is just ... umm... hardware. As the name might suggest. This shop is great for all those utterly random household items that you wold have no idea where otherwise to purchase them, then this place will probably stock it. the amazing thing is that the the guy who works there (or is always there whenever I go in anyway) always has what I ask for and. more importantly, considering the crazy amount of random stuff thy have in there, always knows exactly where to find it. The last time I went in I was looking for a very specific shape of clothes dryer. I knew exactly which type I wanted, but couldn't find one anywhere other than (randomly) in Co-op in Stirchley. Where for some odd reason they were £25 - which seemed an awful lot for a dryer to me. Anyway, I gave Bish Bash Bosh a try and, of course, thy had one. And it was £8 cheaper! I would definitely recommend this place for if you're after cheap household items.

It bills itself as "the anything and everything store" - though this isn't completely true it does go a long way towards describing the contents of the shop. The product range is firmly in the budget end of the market, and there's quite a lot in the way of household goods - it's a great place to buy a cheap mop, broom or dustpan. You can also find things like cheap children's toys, smoking paraphernalia or credit to make international phone calls. It appears to be pretty much a one man operation and that one man seems pretty relaxed when I go in. Ok, it's never going to be hailed as innovative or ground breaking but it doesn't claim to be any of those. It's a shop that aims to sell households goods cheaply and cheerfully, something it manages with ease. Next time you're in the market for some inexpensive cleaning products and you're in the Moseley area, maybe you should give them a visit.

It is just off the Asda roundabout on the Coventry Road, and has a large free carpark. The rebranded B&M store carries less homeware than Au Naturale, and has filled the space with food and drink. Gone are the simple and good quality decorative items that made Au Naturale such a great store - ok, maybe not gone altogether, but you have less chance of finding the real bargains such as a tall hurricane lamp for a tenner and a good quality plain cream rug at the same price. You can still find a good selection of cushions, lamps, small pieces of furniture, bed linen and towels upstairs. Downstairs, B&M has a big selection of food items, mostly of the treats and chocolate variety, but also canned goods and jars. Some of these are great value, and sell-by dates are normally good too. There are also cheap soft drinks, some interesting beers, and diet-busting amounts of chocolate and sweets. You'll also find shower gels and toiletries, although some of these are not cheaper than on the high street. Checkout staff are pleasant, although the store itself can be a bit of a free for all at peak times.

But B&M gets in a lot of quality stuff. Good brand names, much cheaper than supermarkets and big retailers. Before Christmas, they were selling Ben 10 and WWE toys at half the price Toys R Us were charging! The Heybarnes branch is situated on a small retail park, with an Argos next door and an ASDA across the road. I'd always recommend going to B&M first, because it's always going to beat the other two for price even if it doesn't sell most of the stuff (ie groceries that Asda has, wide range of toys and electronics in Argos). The stuff that it does sell will be cheaper there than elsewhere.
