Cut Price Discount Stores is an unpresuming Aladdin's Cave of bargains! This independently run…read morestore is situated directly opposite Aldi Supermarket on Bristol Road, Northfield Town Centre. The inside of the shop is nothing fancy time looks as though it has stood still here for a long time. However, the shop is packed with nearly every conceivable household item you could imagine (excluding furniture and appliances). If you are familiar with Latif and Sons in Birmingham City Centre, think of this shop of a condensed version of the same type of store. Another way of describing it is as 'Northfield's General Store' - everything from kitchenware, cleaning products, garden, diy, computer and automotive accessories are in stock at very reasonable prices. I managed to buy a bunch of last minute Christmas presents here this last year and I had never thought a shop on Northfield could offer such choice, quality and value. The couple who run the shop are lovely too; very friendly. Also, If there is something you are after and they don't stock it, they are happy to source it for you. Often I have bought items from larger stores and supermarkets only to find the same products sold here at a cheaper price. I now usually pop in and check here first if I am after something in particular before shopping around It saves the disappointment! Definitely recommended, especially if you are setting up home and need a local, independent shop to buy the basics!

But don't get me wrong, the centre still boasts a large collection of big stores such as Poundland, WHSmith and Iceland, which are all greatly needed for the Northfield locals. It means that they don't have to travel elsewhere for their necessities. The overall aesthetics of Northfield's precinct are very outdated and generic, however, the actual shops themselves are varied when compared to the usual shopping centres of Brum. It's the independent shops that make the centre different, and there's a great collection of clothes stores for all ages and genders, from the men's shop Little Italy, to the girl's clothes accessories shop Miss Bizybody. I was quite surprised at the actual size of the centre, and expected it to be much smaller for the area (considering that there's quite a few shops on the Bristol Road outside as it is.) The centre is a great find, and is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

For me it is not the best place to go clothes shopping but it is great for Poundland, Superdrug, Peacocks, Iceland, WH Smith amongst many more. I'll always have a browse in the window of Uncle's in Northfield as I am absolutely obsessed with…read moreearrings and have found some really unusual pieces in this pawnbrokers window. This is mainly second hand jewellery, but that's the beauty of this shop because there are items appearing in the window that you're not going to find in other jewellers shops. Of course it also means that you can only choose from whatever they happen to have in that week, but nine times out of ten I'll find something I like - although whether I can afford it or not is another matter. Uncle's obviously puts the most interesting items in the window and you can usually expect to see necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings in the window. All are hallmarked gold and prices are very reasonable in my opinion with hollow hoop earrings starting at around £15, with solid hoops costing around the £60 mark. Everything is displayed beautifully in the window and it always makes me want to go inside and have a look at what Uncle's has in the glass cabinets inside. To be honest it's always a bit of a disappointment inside as the really gorgeous stuff is usually in the window for everyone to see! Inside they'll have a few bangles, stud earrings, the plainer necklaces and things like that. All of it is cheaply priced because to be honest it's not the best quality and the designs are plainer than those you'll see in the window. Uncle's also offers a pawnbroking service, which is now he gets his gold in the first place. I've never used this service but have seen money changing hands when I've been inside browsing. It looks a simple enough process, I think you just have to take your gold in and fill a form in to get your money. You then have a few months to pay the loan back with interest added.

The only Superdrug Store I feel completely comfortable in is the branch in The Grosvenor Shopping…read moreCentre in Northfield, I'm not sure why this is but there's something nice about this store and browsing the shelves is a pleasure. The layout is excellent in here with everything exactly where I expect it to be, a lot of Superdrugs are laid out in a very higgledy piggledy manner I find but this one is the exception to the rule. The aisles are perfectly straight, none of those awful shelving racks that stick out at right angles to the rest making getting around the shop an awkward nightmare! This branch is a decent size and stocks all the big brand names as well as Superdrug branded items. Of course, the emphasis in here is on health and beauty products and the range is fantastic. From shampoo to hair colourants, shower gel to bubble bath and Paracetamol to Deep Heat - everything you could want is available here and at much cheaper prices than its main rival, Boots. The make up selection isn't brilliant, but to be honest I don't use Superdrug for make up anyway so this doesn't bother me. I sometimes buy my daughters bits of make up and have found that although they stock the main brands, the choices of colours are not always the best on the High Street - perfect for a 12 year old just learning about make up though and always a pound or two cheaper than other shops. I love the sales this branch has quite regularly where things are reduced drastically to silly prices. A couple of weeks ago I popped in just to buy a bottle of pop and ended up spending nearly £40 because they'd reduced so many of my favourite products. Original Source bubble bath for 99p, Nivea hand cream for 49p, Nicky Clarke conditioner for 79p - amazing, and my best bargain was a light up mirror reduced from £20 to £4.99! I almost couldn't carry all the bags to the car! The staff in this branch are really lovely, most of them are older than I'd expect but this means they are patient and experienced when dealing with customers. I usually know what I want when I visit Superdrug so rarely have to ask for help, but when I have required assistance the staff are always polite and very helpful.
