This review is long. The end of a 44-year relationship. Have had Max Sr as our dentist since the late 1970's. Never had an issue and also sent all my kids to him. Max Sr is an extremely reputable man, and thank you Max for having been with us for all those years. Nothing beats experience and here's my point. When Max Sr retired, he turned his practice over to his son Max Jr. who I would see every 6 months for cleaning. Jr said I needed to come in every THREE months. And that's when issues started popping up. Jr "reworked" several crowns and fillings over the next year. In Mar 2022, I had to call at ~8pm due to extreme pain in a tooth. It was Wed night. Jr was on another one of his many worldly vacations and was unable to see me until the next Monday. But, he did order an antibiotic. No Emergency Dr backup was scheduled during Jr's absence. By Monday, the infection was out of control. 5 injections could not numb the tooth. Jr pulled the nerve out without any pain relief. WARNING: Don't EVER allow a dentist to do that. Just RUN! Crown was eventually put on. Today, 10 months later, that crown has fallen off (a $5,000 crown at that!) Please DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST. Let him get 20 years under his belt first. read more

Went to Buchwald Sr and Dr Mike for years and we never had an issue with billing or services rendered. When Dr Mike died we were forced to complete treatment with Max Buchwald Jr. Everything seemed to be fine but the billing staff (Jennifer) we originally worked with on Invisalign and Crowns left and new staff took over and that is where the trouble started. We had been provided an estimate for services and they told us they had contacted our insurance provider and this was the total fee was and here was our portion to pay vs what insurance was to pay. For my son's crowns the total amount was $7024. We paid that amount in full and were expecting a small portion back from our insurance carrier (approx $2400). We proceeded with treatment and they filed a claim with our insurance. Because Buchwald did not actually get pre authorization from Humana the claim was denied. So that is bad we were completely out of some reimbursement. Buchwald's new office staff decided to charge $733 more per crown than we were originally told and a total amount billed to insurance of $11,488. What?? They have never been able to explain the increase in price for the same services. We got our Health insurance advocate and Humana involved and they told the office they could not balance bill us as we had in good faith paid the entire bill in full and their charges were excessive. They have since sent my 19 your son to collections and we are in the process of disputing and fighting that debt. I never seen such incompetent billing office and tons of turnover in staff. When we asked about the billing and lack of pre approval they told us the previous staff didn't know what they were doing and we were still on the hook for services. We paid $7000 (total amount ) how much more do you want from us?? Steer clear there are nicer offices and more knowledgable billing staff at other dentist office in the area. I had an absolutely terrible experience here. I left my old dentist because he was condescending and sexist, I came here only to find an incompetent one. While the hygienist performed the smoothest and most painless cleaning of my dental history, that was the only positive from my interactions with this establishment. I was informed by the dentist I needed a cap on my tooth, that we had found it in time to not need a root canal. He performed the procedure and left one of his assistants to place the temporary cap. I left, only needing to return a few hours later because the cap had not actually been placed securely. They secured it and sent me on my way. I asked the receptionist before leaving if I would need pain meds or anything, she said she never had. For 7 days I was in extreme pain, I was rotating Tylenol and Advil and popping them like candy. My tooth had radiating pain and woke me up several times in the night. Within the week, I had to go in 3 more times for him to 'fix' the height of the crown. I have no clue why it would take someone who is supposed to be capable in their field 3 chances to do what they are trained to do. I kept having to reach out to go in again and again. Finally on the last visit, he said I would need a root canal. I understand starting with a conservative approach, but when you keep ineptly fixing an issue or saying you have fixed it, only for someone to be in radiating pain, I think that it is very clear of someone's capabilities, or really, the lack there of. Prior to his office performing the procedure and placing the temporary cap, I had no pain in that tooth whatsoever. Following the procedure, I had a weeks worth of pain/sleepless nights, I had to pay them for a procedure that brought me all this pain, and I also had to pay for a root canal. Now, they are calling and asking when I want to schedule the next procedure and multiple fillings I need, when I was not even informed I needed more fillings. As if I would trust them with my health, wellbeing, or mouth again. The Dr. and his staff come across as very kind and genuine, but they DO NOT follow through on their work, and circumstances feel a bit shady. I realized this office is rated so well, because the majority of the reviews are from when Dr. Max sr. (the current dentist's father) was in charge. Ever since the practice has changed hands, I would say the reviews are no longer applicable. Don't go here unless you want to be scammed of money, time, and good dental care! read more

This place is great if you like being jerked around. If dishonesty is your thing, this is the place for you! If you like having your appointment changed at the last minute without your consent, then you will love this place. They are A-1 top notch at misdiagnosing problems and performing unnecessary procedures like no other. I was super impressed with the out of pocket costs. They were higher than expected and impressively bloated. I was also blown away by their attempts to negotiate the price down instead of simply charging me the proper price the first time. Wow! Amazing! The second opinion I received was a mere fraction of the cost of this place. I'm sure the second option had no idea what they were doing. I'd much rather spend thousands more than I need to. I started seeing Dr. B senior after I got married and moved in with my spouse. Our whole family enjoyed Heather's smile and personality at front desk. As a non religious individual I felt limited in my responses because.I was unsure how they might impact my care, conversations were certainly conservative and christian. My children loved him, the dollar coin to guess how many teeth they had, and the beloved treasure box. The box and balloons remain, the coins turned to bills, and senior left and junior took over. He seems nice, but something was off. My spouse used the term disingenuous. The staff changed, Sloan, his mother was filling in at last.visit. The dental hygienist they had with senior, I forget her name Holly? was ok but very task oriented. The newer ones that came with Jr. were more personal but they were not consistent, high turnover? I felt like I was being pushed into making expensive choices for our kids often. My son needed braces, then a retainer, last visit, nothing... we did nothing, no braces or retainer so that's confusing to say the least. They tried to sell me and spouse night guards (I do grind teeth we hen stressed out), but $600.00??? Really? That's for one. Used car salesman (stereotype portrayed in movies), is the vibe I got all smiles until you turned down a service/sale We were not comfortable coming in during mid-late 2020 due to COVID-19. Now vaccinated still not entirely comfortable with idea. However my spouse and I are looking elsewhere. I need work done, that was obvious when they pointed it out at last visit, but then COVID hit and I put it off. I would get multiple calls from their office in a day while at work, it was irritating and I finally told them, when we are ready to come in and feel it is safe to do so, we will call you, calls continued and I responded to front office staff (same new person not mom or sloan) to please stop calling, we are going to find a new dentist. Make up your own mind, perhaps they are your cup of tea, turned out that with change in practice from senior to junior that they are no longer ours. read more

If you want to use your insurance, go somewhere else! They add on hidden fees and bribe you to pay in full to save. I have always been a huge fan of Dr. Buchwalds and have been his patient for the past 35 years. I am not a fan of his billing office and front office because today I realize that at my last appointment when I paid out using my flexible spending account MasterCard they actually billed me for my husband's balance on his account also without telling me about it. Once I realized it and spoke to them today they said that there was nothing they could do because it had been more than 30 days and I should just bill my husband for the balance that he owed me. Why they would ever think that they could just use my credit card to pay off a family members balance is beyond me and completely unacceptable. I can't say enough good things! I've been going to this practice since I was a child, and always had good experiences as far as I can remember. As an adult, I fell onto hard times for many years, so my teeth haven't been as well-cared for as needed. I recently went for it, and was embarrassed to go. I was met with understanding and zero shame. They're easy to work with on spreading out appointments to stay within budget if you don't have insurance, and are very up front about everything. These people are jerks like to the fullest extent. Treated me like crap because there was an issue with my insurance, made me wait a month for a root canal, and just today I have had the entire front part of my tooth chipped off while eating a saltine cracker after Dr Buchwald charged me an arm and a leg to add bonding to it. They also refused to see me anymore after I could not afford the entire out of pocket for a root canal because I found my insurance was awful. They literally sent me a letter in the mail that said don't come back find another dentist. As a single mom who barely has insurance coverage, you think that a dentist that gave a darn would try to work with me or offer a payment plan or refer me to somewhere that could help instead they allowed me to just deal with a severe infection and in surmountable amount of pain. These people are awful-don't learn the hard way like I did also as a sidenote, the little girl technicians will talk crap about you right outside the door where you can hear. Dr. Mike is a really good dentist. The younger Dr. left a sore bruise in the top of my mouth for a week from pushing so hard to install a crown. I'm always on time for appointments, but have had to wait up to 45 min., 30 min. wait is average. On repeated occasions, the insurance co. hasn't approved some of the over charges & I've had to ask three times for a refund. A staff member even slipped & said the doctor likes to keep the overpaid balance on the account. Most recently I asked for a refund on another insurance denied charge & they lied & said the dentist gets the EOB after the patient does & said they'd send a check after the received it. After 5 weeks nothing. read more

Very affordable and they were able to get me in within the week vs. months out. The staff is very friendly and make you feel at ease. However, the office is a complete wreck, paperwork everywhere, terrible music playing and old run down aesthetics. The bite guard I received was not polished or fit well after a couple of different attempts. The edges of the appliance were very jagged and it looks terrible. Seems to work okay, but I will not go back or recommend this practice to anyone. Update the office, turn on some soothing music, make sure environment is clean and modernized...otherwise, I don't see this practice ever being a great success! read more

Dr. Buchwald told me I needed a root canal due to tooth pain. I have received feedback from 2 different dentists, both who said I didn't need the root canal. I just found out that my root canal was done incorrectly and I have to have another operation. I would not suggest going to Dr. Buchwald!!! read more

They all go above and beyond to put you, the patient FIRST. I broke a tooth on a Thursday night, called the office first thing Friday morning. I was having problems and not only did they work me into the schedule today, but I was able to go ahead and get the needed treatment immediately instead of having to make a return trip. I find I rarely have to wait long with a scheduled appointment (and sometimes I've been called back a few minutes early if I've arrived early) .
