Tim's Roof Contractors

Tim's Roof Contractors

After failing multiple times to get return calls from Hipp's Roofing, I did an online search to…read morefind a new roofer. I found Tim's Roof Contractors in Kings Mountain that had 108 Google Reviews with an average rating of 4.9. Pretty dang good. I clicked on their website and found it to be professional and well organized. This led to two recent experiences. 1) We had a leak in the ceiling of our second-floor bathroom. Turns out the plumber said we have a leak in the roof around the plumbing ventilation pipe. It was going to start snowing in a couple of days and we were worried the leak would get worse. A worker from Tim's came out the very next day and did an excellent repair job at a reasonable price. 2) I was so happy with the timeliness and quality of their work on my house that I used them for a repair job on my mother's roof. The estimate was free and given by an onsite crew led by George. He clearly explained what needed to be fixed to stop any leaks and the process of how they would do it. I felt the price to be fair. By early the next week, he and his crew completed the repairs and even took before and after pictures so I could show my mother exactly what they were doing/repairing. I highly recommend Tim and his crews for any of your roofing needs!

Cathey Roofing installed a new shingled roof on our home in October 2020. While we had a few…read moremiscommunications during the install, Corey did a good job of resolving our concerns and it appeared all was in good order. What we didn't know is what was hidden under the new shingles. A few years prior in October 2016, he had brand new Velux skylights installed. Knowing that skylights can present the possibility of leaks, I was careful to choose a vendor that would use the Velux flashing kit and install precisely according to the manufacturer's instructions. I saw the skylight installation first hand including pictures of the completed flashing. It was pristine. Flash forward to a few months ago. We started to notice mold appearing on our living room ceiling. It wasn't in the skylight shaft but on the ceiling around the shaft about 8-12" away. We reached out to Cathey Roofing and they sent a repair specialist who said that the skylights "failed" and that was evidenced by the mold. Knowing how those skylights were installed and that they were warrantied, we reached out to the Velux dealer. They sent a representative who came and inspected the skylights and the flashing around them. The flashing had been damaged and the new roof incorrectly installed around the skylights. Cathey Roofing nailed THROUGH the skylight flashing when they reroofed. They also covered up the channels intended to divert water around the skylight rather than leaving them exposed as they should have. We even went so far as to arrange a Velux representative to train the Cathey Roofing team on correct flashing and shingling around a Velux skylight so that in the future they would not have a repeat of this problem. The shingles are actually bent and wavy around the skylights. Again we called Cathey Roofing and got no response. Finally, I texted Corey Cathey and laid out my concerns since he wouldn't return our calls. He stated that he would meet the Velux representative at our home and make it right. That has now been another ten days and Cathey Roofing will not answer the calls nor respond. The Velux rep has called and left two messages that have gone unanswered. The Velux folks have even gone to the address listed for the business but was not able to reach anybody. We have called and our calls and texts have been unanswered as well. Meanwhile, there is water damage and mold all over my living room ceiling from their poor quality installation. Any company can make a mistake. Reputable companies place a priority on correcting their mistakes because their reputation on the line. Cathey Roofing is intentionally evading having to correct their shotty workmanship. I do not recommend this roofing company and strongly suggest before requesting a quote you consider how very important it is for a company to stand behind their work.

After residual Irma winds caused a leak in my roof I hired Max Baxter Roofing for repairs. The…read morerepairman that showed up came with two other people, male and female, both seemingly unrelated (to roof repair) passengers in his pickup (one coloring in a coloring book). After realizing I had no method of payment, I told the repairman I would run to the store ATM for cash (10 minutes max). He was agreeable, and said he would start the repairs. While I was gone (approximately 10 minutes), it POURED rain. Upon return, the repairman was waiting for me saying he was done...10 minutes...in the pouring rain. By this time the rain had stopped, so I paid the cash. When no receipt was offered, I asked for one. What I received was slightly passable as a receipt. Sure enough, next rain, the roof was leaking again. I called Max Baxter back and the "Baxter" that I talked to, originally said he would come by in the morning sometime. He didn't - sick child. He didn't notify me of this development, so when I called him the next day, he said he would send the original repairman back to repair the repair. I told "Baxter" I was uncomfortable with this repairman's work and was told he was "the only one I have" to do the repair to the repair. When I declined and stated I would rather pay someone else to repair the repair, the "Baxter" that I was speaking to said OK and hung up. Interestingly enough, Yelp has two addresses for this company (Puetts Chapel Road and Costner School Road) and two different phone numbers. The website link is the same for both. I would not recommend this roofing company.

TL/DR: Merritt Roofing has completely eroded my trust in their products and service. I do NOT…read morerecommend. 8-months after installation, we still don't have a roof we can trust, and they seem to be done supporting me. We did our due diligence and spoke to several roofing companies before committing to Merritt to fully replace our roof. We liked the salesperson/Project Manager, Jason (who was fairly new to the company, but being mentored by another, Bryan), and the price was in the middle of the pack (just over $10K). We even went ahead and paid extra for the "Platinum Coverage" for added piece of mind. We did everything we could think of to receive a good quality service/product. August 2025 - The installation crew did such a bad job on our roof that Merritt have since told me (as if it would put my mind at ease) that they will no longer work with that crew. That's fine for the next folks, I guess, but doesn't help us at all. I understand that they do still work with the contractors of the crew, just not those exact installers, so no guarantee that the way their other crews behave will be any better. We were also surprised to find out that Merritt contracts in installation crews, as part of what we were hoping we were paying for by going with a large, named company was a dedicated installation team. We could have hired random contractors ourselves. The edges of all of the shingles at the ends of the roofs were cut so badly that they were crescent-shaped, and the shingles underneath were exposed. There were a number of chunks taken out of the shingles by carless ladder placement. One of the crew had decided to fix part of a gutter that he had dislodged by shooting a bunch of nails into it, shooting a nail through the bottom of my gutter in the process, and causing a leaking gutter. They had also cracked the soffits (The vent underneath the edge of the roof), and it was just hanging out. They hadn't even tried to repair it. Although this has now been put back in place, it is still cracked. There were numerous other issues with the installation, but the team packed up and left without saying anything to me, and the Salesperson/PM wasn't around either. I called the Salesperson/PM when I went outside to look at the roof, and let him know that I saw some issues with the roof. He came over and agreed that it wasn't acceptable. The team was called back to address, and one of them showed up. He replaced a couple of shingles, and then tried to leave again. He made it clear we weren't happy with the edges of all of the roofs, and that they needed to address. It was scheduled that they would come out a few days later and replace all of those shingles. So immediately we went from having a new roof to a repaired roof. When the team did come to repair the roof, they were supposed to start at 8:30 am. The first person finally arrived at 10:20 am. and they starting working at around 10:40 am. Once the repairs were completed I pointed out some areas I wasn't happy with, and was put in touch with Garrett Zarecky, the Merritt "Production Manager" and was told that they would settle in the next couple of months. Garrett scheduled a date with me at the end of September to come and inspect the roof. He also made a number of comments along the lines of "If we need to replace the whole roof, we will" and that he would check inside our attic space, if he felt it necessary. September 29th 2025 - Garret game to inspect the roof, did not go inside the attic, despite saying he would. He told me something along the lines of "I wouldn't be able to see any issues from in there anyway". He also noted a lot of my concerns, but told me he was happy with how the roof looked and how it was performing. He assured me that this roof was as good as new, despite admitting that they no longer worked with the crew that installed it. Nov/December 2025 - I was cleaning the gutters, preparing for winter, and noticed that there were still a number of shingles that had scuffs and even gouges out of them. There was also the head of a nail pushing through one of the shingles at the back of the house, close to the edge. There were a numbers of other issues with the way the shingles lay and looked cosmetically. I reached out to Jason, Bryan and Garrett, the Production Manager. Jason had left the company, which seemed odd for a person who had only started there a few months before, so Bryan came out to inspect the roof. He agreed that it looked like the shingles had been damaged in some way, possibly as a defect in the shingles, and asked Garrett to inspect the roof. Garrett told me that the damage wasn't caused by a defect, but by foot traffic. The fact that there had been enough foot traffic on my roof in the days after it was installed to cause damage, seems to be another indication of how poorly it was installed. Merritt's "Repair Guy" (Garrett's words), Alonzo, came out in December and removed large areas of shingles, replacing them

The agreement included a five-year warranty on the labor. The work was completed on March 7, 2019, and the invoice was paid in full. However, the roof continued to leak when there was a heavy rain. I contacted Mr. Walton and he returned to correct the issue, but the problem persisted and got worse. Due to my suffering a massive heart attack and transitioning six times, the death of my son and mother I could not recall the information in order to contact Mr. Walton again. My ceilings were being damaged badly by the rain. In order to avoid further damage, I contacted a local contractor in September 2023 to make the necessary repairs. I was advised by the contractor that the roofing repairs were improperly done; not a damaged shingles were replaced, gaps were left, not all shingles were properly secured, the ridge vent was not completely replaced, and nails were everywhere. In September, while searching for paperwork for my mother who transitioned in November 2023, I located the contract with Mr. Walton. I immediately called him and advised him of the issues and the additional damage done to my home and he had nothing to say. I also requested reimbursement for the additional expense incurred. I did not receive a call back from Mr. Walton. I sent a certified letter to him on October 8, 2023, and he refused to claim the mail, therefore I filed a Small Claims against him. The case was heard on December 5, 2023 in the Gaston County Courthouse and was dismissed. The judge stated that the Statue of Limitation is three years. He did not consider our five-year warranty but suggested to Mr. Walton that he may get together with me and work something out since I did incur the extra cost. Mr. Walton immediately existed the courthouse and I have not heard from him to date (01-19-2024). I am a disabled senior citizen who has been taken advantage of and is left with major repair expense due to the improper roof repairs performed by Mr. Walton's workers. I am disappointed that Mr. Walton did not live up to his written agreement with me. Thank you. Elaine
