I called the office and they sent Garrett out to take a look at my missing shingle issue. He was…read moreable to diagnose, get me the single shingle I needed and came back the next day to do the repair. Finished it 15 min. Super service and great guy. Highly recommend!

TL/DR: Merritt Roofing has completely eroded my trust in their products and service. I do NOT…read morerecommend. 8-months after installation, we still don't have a roof we can trust, and they seem to be done supporting me. We did our due diligence and spoke to several roofing companies before committing to Merritt to fully replace our roof. We liked the salesperson/Project Manager, Jason (who was fairly new to the company, but being mentored by another, Bryan), and the price was in the middle of the pack (just over $10K). We even went ahead and paid extra for the "Platinum Coverage" for added piece of mind. We did everything we could think of to receive a good quality service/product. August 2025 - The installation crew did such a bad job on our roof that Merritt have since told me (as if it would put my mind at ease) that they will no longer work with that crew. That's fine for the next folks, I guess, but doesn't help us at all. I understand that they do still work with the contractors of the crew, just not those exact installers, so no guarantee that the way their other crews behave will be any better. We were also surprised to find out that Merritt contracts in installation crews, as part of what we were hoping we were paying for by going with a large, named company was a dedicated installation team. We could have hired random contractors ourselves. The edges of all of the shingles at the ends of the roofs were cut so badly that they were crescent-shaped, and the shingles underneath were exposed. There were a number of chunks taken out of the shingles by carless ladder placement. One of the crew had decided to fix part of a gutter that he had dislodged by shooting a bunch of nails into it, shooting a nail through the bottom of my gutter in the process, and causing a leaking gutter. They had also cracked the soffits (The vent underneath the edge of the roof), and it was just hanging out. They hadn't even tried to repair it. Although this has now been put back in place, it is still cracked. There were numerous other issues with the installation, but the team packed up and left without saying anything to me, and the Salesperson/PM wasn't around either. I called the Salesperson/PM when I went outside to look at the roof, and let him know that I saw some issues with the roof. He came over and agreed that it wasn't acceptable. The team was called back to address, and one of them showed up. He replaced a couple of shingles, and then tried to leave again. He made it clear we weren't happy with the edges of all of the roofs, and that they needed to address. It was scheduled that they would come out a few days later and replace all of those shingles. So immediately we went from having a new roof to a repaired roof. When the team did come to repair the roof, they were supposed to start at 8:30 am. The first person finally arrived at 10:20 am. and they starting working at around 10:40 am. Once the repairs were completed I pointed out some areas I wasn't happy with, and was put in touch with Garrett Zarecky, the Merritt "Production Manager" and was told that they would settle in the next couple of months. Garrett scheduled a date with me at the end of September to come and inspect the roof. He also made a number of comments along the lines of "If we need to replace the whole roof, we will" and that he would check inside our attic space, if he felt it necessary. September 29th 2025 - Garret game to inspect the roof, did not go inside the attic, despite saying he would. He told me something along the lines of "I wouldn't be able to see any issues from in there anyway". He also noted a lot of my concerns, but told me he was happy with how the roof looked and how it was performing. He assured me that this roof was as good as new, despite admitting that they no longer worked with the crew that installed it. Nov/December 2025 - I was cleaning the gutters, preparing for winter, and noticed that there were still a number of shingles that had scuffs and even gouges out of them. There was also the head of a nail pushing through one of the shingles at the back of the house, close to the edge. There were a numbers of other issues with the way the shingles lay and looked cosmetically. I reached out to Jason, Bryan and Garrett, the Production Manager. Jason had left the company, which seemed odd for a person who had only started there a few months before, so Bryan came out to inspect the roof. He agreed that it looked like the shingles had been damaged in some way, possibly as a defect in the shingles, and asked Garrett to inspect the roof. Garrett told me that the damage wasn't caused by a defect, but by foot traffic. The fact that there had been enough foot traffic on my roof in the days after it was installed to cause damage, seems to be another indication of how poorly it was installed. Merritt's "Repair Guy" (Garrett's words), Alonzo, came out in December and removed large areas of shingles, replacing them

I used this company several years ago and it was the absolute worst experience I have ever had…read morewith a contractor. The subs that actually installed my roof did a great job but the owner and his salesmen were very dishonest. It ended up with lawyers getting involved and countless headaches. Do your homework on anyone from this company that approaches you.

One good thing to say about these guys is that their salesmen work their butt off. Unfortunately…read morefor them, they guy in charge isn't very honest. I cannot speak about the quality of their workmanship, but I can explain why I didn't have them do my roof. Empire is a 'storm chaser' roofing company. The contractors drive around neighborhoods and look for old roofs, ask for permission to inspect the roof, and if they find damage they will help you make a claim on your insurance for a new roof. They will handle it all for you, and if you're willing to get 25 year shingles with only a 2 year workmanship guarantee and hand over your insurance money, then by all means, these are your people. However my issue was that I had other estimates for my roof before these guys stopped by and did an inspection. I knew how much redoing my house and shed in architectural shingles would cost. Empire will give you 25 year shingles for whatever your insurance pays out. They make it sound like a deal-except depending on what your insurance pays out, it might not be. My insurance money plus my deductible came to right under $8,000.00. That amount is $1200.00 more than any other company had quoted me for doing my roof in architectural shingles. Empire will never give a quote. When I realized how much money they would be getting, I asked if they could do architectural shingles because there was plenty of funds to cover them (you can Google the price of 25 year versus architectural shingles and see what I mean). I was given the run around and told that architectural shingles had to be paid out of pocket. So they wanted the money from my insurance company and my deductible, PLUS more money to cover the 'cost of architectural shingles' which is apparently super expensive for them because they are 'certified' which I assume means they're Certainteed Certified-like many. Whenever I mentioned wanting architectural shingles to the sales guy (super hard worker) he always seemed to try to talk me out of it..but I didn't understand why until all of this happened. Anyway, after being told the architectural shingles would be out of my pocket, I told them not to order anything and put the job on hold. I went back to my previous estimates, even talked to my claims guy, and the numbers did not add up. These guys were going to make a KILLING off of me and my insurance company. Then the owner Mike called. Mike decided it would be a good plan to talk to me like I was an idiot. He whispered over the phone that as long as I didn't tell my neighbors, he would make this *one* exception and do the architectural shingles-but only because he was trying to get into my neighborhood and wanted to get my roof done ASAP to show as an example of their work. I guess I was supposed to feel super special he was going to give me such a 'wonderful' deal and even risk 'not making any profit' on it, and I was also supposed to agree immediately because they were in a rush. If Mike had simply called and said 'Hey-I looked at the numbers again and we will be happy to do the architectural shingles like you want-not a problem.' then I would have said great-let's do this. But do not call me and talk to me like you're doing me a favor. I told Mike that his company had left a sour taste in my mouth and that I was meeting with another company and would call him after that meeting and let him know what I decided. Apparently Mike didn't think I could hear him say 'crap..' under his voice while still over the phone. The conversation was interesting to say the least. I did as I promised and called Mike to inform his I would not be using his company. Then Mike got really, really needy. He went on for 10 minutes about how great his company was and how I should do my homework and read all of their reviews, Angie's list, and check the BBB, ect, ect (all of which I do before ever hiring a company, btw). He started back-peddling hard, saying he didn't understand why I would not go with them, didn't understand why I all of the sudden had a sour taste about them, asked me to reconsider. I explained I did not like their business practices and stated again that I would not be using them. Then Mike got really, really angry. Told me the only reason he could see me not using his company was if I was trying to commit insurance fraud, he got loud and ridiculous. Thankfully this time I had him on speakerphone so others in the room could hear just how ridiculous he was. So after he accused me of insurance fraud and threatened to report me, I offered him the number of my claims guy to do just that as I laughed, and asked if he wanted to continue arguing back and forth over the phone or if maybe he had something better to do with his time. We hung up, and he tried calling me the next day. Needless to say, I did not answer. We now have the new roof we wanted, done by a different company with a better guarantee. Empire-don't threaten or bully your customers, not a nice business practice.
