We went to max and Benny's recently and I would say the service is good and the restaurant is very spacious. The bakery has a large variety as well. Food: lox bagel: 4.5/5 it's pretty good and I love their chive cream cheese. My only complaint was that there were a lot of things that were spotty like dirty plates. Tea with lemon wedges that still had their stickers on and so on. I think if things were cleaner it would for sure be a higher rating. read more

Went to Max and Benny's recently and the food was good. The reason for this low review is because of our server. I'm not sure why, maybe because my friend and I are younger? But our server kept ignoring our table specifically, taking forever to take our orders and to bring out our food. Even when we had a question about something, we would try to get her attention but she would completely ignore us. We waited 15 minutes to get the check after we were done eating our food. We went for a Mother's Day brunch and it was really quite good. The brunch came with; lox, onions, tomatoes, cheese , cucumber, Kalamata olives, regular cream cheese and chive cream. It also came with your choice of bagel, egg salad, tuna salad, Fish salad, kugel cups, fresh fruit salad, and brownies and chocolate covered strawberries. . All of this for $25 dollars per person. Definitely well worth the cost and in addition to this we had two wonderful waiters. We sat in the private room in the back so there was a nice quiet place to be rather than the noisy restaurant. All in all I would certainly go back again. It was well worth it and we got to bring home plenty of leftovers. Remember when this was the place to go. My first visit today was inspired by my sister wanting some cabbage soup. Back in the 90's she ate there every Friday. This particular Wednesday evening seemed off. Soup came out lukewarm warm. Soup should be hot. Server took it back, came out warmer but hardly any cabbage. Took it off my bill. Never heard of a San Francisco Rueben before, so gave it a try. Bottom bread was mush and sandwich fell apart. Needed a better sear. Last few bits the corned beef was tough. Not sure what happened to this place, but it's not good. We went here on the 4th of July. We were only the 2nd table of diners in the whole restaurant. So, otherwise, empty. I'm sure the waitress didn't want to be there, she barely cracked a smile. She never came back to refill coffee, and was nowhere to be found so we could ask for a refill. We both had omelets with cheddar cheese, which wasn't really cheddar. It looked like a plastic wrapped cheese slice.There were mystery ingredients in my omelet. I think I was treated to zucchini and chives. Not a huge deal, but what about diners with food allergies? Halfway through my omelet, the egg was clearly not cooked. When we brought it to her attention, she took it back to the kitchen and she came back telling us the cook and the manager said it wasn't undercooked. Ummmmm, I have been cooking for 40 years and it's not hard to recognize semi clear yellow in "cooked" eggs. The hash browns were chunks of cooked potatoes with minimal brown, no taste and looked like boiled potatoes reheated. Too bad a formerly great place has gone so far downhill. read more

My Delicatessen life started in San Francisco on McAllister Street a very long time ago. When you grow up with Jewish Deli's your whole life, you tend to know what's excellent, what's good and what's just "Okay". Excellent would be Katz's Deli or Russ and Daughters in New York or Brent's or Langers in Los Angeles. There is a host of very good deli's that are too many to mention by name. I would put Max and Benny's in the "very good" category for many reasons: First, would be their pricing. What they give you for the price you're paying is fantastic. Second, would be the service. These helpful people working here are incredibly accommodating. Third, would be the food. No bells or whistles going off here. Just down home, real, authentic delicatessen food that is being served. Max and Benny's is huge. There is so much room to move in this immense building, I could only imagine if this place sold out? That would be crazy! I had a very good pastrami on rye with deli mustard (not hot dog mustard). It came with a crisp pickle and a basic cold slaw. I found this dinner to be very good without the "break your bank" prices some Deli's charge. Max and Benny's Deli, way out here in the suburbs of Chicago really worked for me! read more

Old school restaurant and deli with all of the classics -- reubens, hot open faced sandwiches, pastrami -- and most come with coleslaw and a pickle. We were also given a dinner roll with butter. I ordered the San Francisco Reuben which was different in that it had horseradish (no sauerkraut) and Monterey Jack instead of Swiss. It was piled high with corned beef, although a little chewy. It was tasty and I liked the slight changes vs the traditional Reuben. I also enjoyed a potato pancake. My companion had matzo ball soup and a corned beef sandwich. Very pleasant retro setting, popular with the older crowd, and interestingly, we were asked if we were there for the author event (we were not). Nice selections at the deli. read more

I've been going to Max and Benny's for years, and am never disappointed. The matzo ball soup is worth the 40 minute drive I have to make, and the Reuben is top notch. My husband and I enjoy Max and Benny's. Recently we stopped in for lunch and my husband had soup and a deli salad and I just had a small bowl of vegetable soup. When we got the bill I was shocked to see how much a small bowl of soup costs, $8.99. My husband's charge was half the price when ordering other food. We spend a lot of time at Max & Benny's but I will have to rethink about how often we eat there.I told my waitress and she was even surprised and checked; she came back and apologized about the cost. What happened to this place? Over the years, I've been to some of the best delis in the US. Canters, Wexlers, Fromins, Greenblatts, Shermans, DZ Akins, Manny's, Bergsteins, David's, Russ and Daughter, Stage Door, 2nd Avenue......... Max & Benny's used to be on this list. Not anymore. We hadn't been to the restaurant in years, so we stopped en route to Wisconsin for a Friday night dinner. The changes were immediately noticeable. The once-busy marketplace area was empty and quiet, with many empty cabinets and coolers. Once upon a time, you'd have to take a number and wait in line for service. That evening, there was nothing to buy and no one working to serve you. It was bizarre. Even more bizarre: the seating process. We checked in with the host station and waited to be seated. The restaurant was nearly empty -- at dinner time -- which should have been a clue. Still, we were kept waiting for about 10 minutes while the server and his co-worker socialized in front of us. Then, we were seated at a table next to the host station that had been empty and ready the entire time. Why? Another 10 minutes passed with no server. We received water, but no menus. The host continued chitchatting with coworkers right next to us, but nobody waited on us. I finally turned around and asked them if we had a server. They said they'd get someone. A server came racing out to take our order, but we'd never received menus. More waiting. Finally, we placed and received our orders, but there was no silverware, no bread basket, no pickles, nothing. When we asked about this, we were just told "oh, we don't do that anymore, we haven't done that since the pandemic." To which i said, "including silverware?" We each had an old-time favorite: half soup, half sandwich. The sandwich was tiny -- more of an appetizer size than the former portion -- and the bread tasted like it was stale. The soup had zero flavor at all -- none. It just tasted like water. There was no presentation or garnish to the meal at all. My half sandwich came on an enormous plate. It looked almost ridiculously small. Throughout our dinner, we noted that none of the tables were being cleared or cleaned. We also noted a lot of customers waiting for service, some of whom actually got up and left. We were just handed our bill, which turned out to be for another table, and led to another long delay just to leave the restaurant. We were still hungry after spending $50+ for two people. Unreal! It's actually kind of heartbreaking what happened to this place. We used to drive out of our way to visit Max & Benny's for years. Now, I drive by in shock that the restaurant hasn't closed permanently. If you live in Chicago, save your time, save your money, and save your frustrations. The Bagel is far superior in every single way, and they actually care if you come back or not. read more

Max & Benny's is a great deli addition to the area. They have great food options, their corned beef and pastrami sandwiches are on point (not dried out). I like their open face turkey with mashed potatos, gravy, and stuffing. And don't forget that every entree comes with soup. I suggest the matzoball WITH noodles. They can pack in a lot of people. Most. recently, I went on a night that they had Pat Hughes speak. The place was jam packed for the event. We (like everyone else) arrived by 5pm so we could eat before the event began at 6pm. Their servers were on their game. There wasn't a special menu. You could order off the large menu. They brought out bread and pickles to nosh on, then brought our drinks, took our order (we were at a table of 14), brought our order out lickety-split, gave us our individual bills, and we paid either the server or at a register in the bakery/deli part of the restaurant. All done by 6pm. Every order accurate. No mess-ups...in the entire restaurant! I had their black and white cookie for dessert (by far one of the best places to get one).
