This place is throwback to old diner-like days.it has a great atmosphere with a lil deli shop to boot. Food was tasty I had the San Fran Rueben and my GF had the 3 slider deli deal. I also ordered the potato pancake too. The taste was just as expected "GOOD". I personally prefer alil more of the fatty part of the corned beef but neither here nor there! The restaurant is spacious and can be very busy at times, especially around certain holidays. We went for a later dinner and we were seated immediately. Our server, Andrew, greeted us quickly and gave us a sufficient amount of time to peruse the menu. They have a variety of food options from breakfast items, soups, sandwiches, meal options and dessert. They also have a to go deli area with fresh and frozen items. The food items we ordered were delicious and the sandwich had a generous portion of corned beef. We went to max and Benny's recently and I would say the service is good and the restaurant is very spacious. The bakery has a large variety as well. Food: lox bagel: 4.5/5 it's pretty good and I love their chive cream cheese. My only complaint was that there were a lot of things that were spotty like dirty plates. Tea with lemon wedges that still had their stickers on and so on. I think if things were cleaner it would for sure be a higher rating. read more

Went to Max and Benny's recently and the food was good. The reason for this low review is because of our server. I'm not sure why, maybe because my friend and I are younger? But our server kept ignoring our table specifically, taking forever to take our orders and to bring out our food. Even when we had a question about something, we would try to get her attention but she would completely ignore us. We waited 15 minutes to get the check after we were done eating our food. My sister brought me a corned beef sandwich on an onion roll and my husband a pastrami sandwich on rye this evening after a reunion of grade school and hs gals this afternoon. I have had some of the best corned beef in this restaurant, albeit 20+ years ago. I'm sure my sister paid good money for these 2 sandwiches which is why I am leaving this review. My skimpy sandwich was at least 1/3 large globs of fat. There's marbling then there's 2" pieces on almost every slice. We went for a Mother's Day brunch and it was really quite good. The brunch came with; lox, onions, tomatoes, cheese , cucumber, Kalamata olives, regular cream cheese and chive cream. It also came with your choice of bagel, egg salad, tuna salad, Fish salad, kugel cups, fresh fruit salad, and brownies and chocolate covered strawberries. . All of this for $25 dollars per person. Definitely well worth the cost and in addition to this we had two wonderful waiters. We sat in the private room in the back so there was a nice quiet place to be rather than the noisy restaurant. All in all I would certainly go back again. It was well worth it and we got to bring home plenty of leftovers. As an after thought I would like to say when you order either the lox plate or the lox platter you do not get any of the side dishes for a more expensive price. read more

Remember when this was the place to go. My first visit today was inspired by my sister wanting some cabbage soup. Back in the 90's she ate there every Friday. This particular Wednesday evening seemed off. Soup came out lukewarm warm. Soup should be hot. Server took it back, came out warmer but hardly any cabbage. Took it off my bill. Never heard of a San Francisco Rueben before, so gave it a try. Bottom bread was mush and sandwich fell apart. Needed a better sear. Last few bits the corned beef was tough. I have been a client in the past but last night was the end of it. Waited 10 minutes to get table when there were open ones ( no problem) When we did get a table it took 10 minutes for a busboy to bring water ( wearing b;ackk gloves that he was wearing cleaning tables). After waiting an additional 10 minutes for ourt server, we walked out telling the hostess what happened. She said sorrym and acted as there was no concern on her part. Out server was busy socializing with other clients sharing pictures with other patrons. At 730 on a sunday night when they closed at 830m I dont see why this happened when the place was maybe 40% full read more

Placed a pick up order for 2 corn beef sandwiches. When we got home we discovered that the sandwiches were inedible. Called and spoke with the manager who said he would replace the sandwiches or give me a store credit. I told him coming back was not doable because of the time and it would be too late when I got home. I asked if Door Dash could deliver it and he said no. Either a store credit or remake. Went to the deli last night for dinner had to feed tickets for the Lincolnshire and we needed a place that was close and timely. We got there in about 515. No line they wouldn't take a reservation and I ordered a brisket sandwich with barbecue sauce when the waitress Janet told me how lean it was and I said I wanted a very lean and she said they charge me a buck and a half extra and it would be very very lean. They brought out a pile of fat with barbecue sauce on a bun which I rejected showed her the Fat just all over it and said this wasn't lean in any way shape or form, she said that I want something else to eat and I said yes get me lox and a bagel. She said what kind of bagel I said and everything bagel and that's what they brought me out and it was delicious. It was great Lach probably some of the best I've ever had my wife ordered an omelette and she said it was very, very good so I can give this place three stars there to go stuff is great. I bought some Mondel bread and salami, sticks and tuna salad and salmon salad to go all very good but it bothers me that they don't know what lean is. This was exactly the opposite. My Delicatessen life started in San Francisco on McAllister Street a very long time ago. When you grow up with Jewish Deli's your whole life, you tend to know what's excellent, what's good and what's just "Okay". Excellent would be Katz's Deli or Russ and Daughters in New York or Brent's or Langers in Los Angeles. There is a host of very good deli's that are too many to mention by name. I would put Max and Benny's in the "very good" category for many reasons: First, would be their pricing. What they give you for the price you're paying is fantastic. Second, would be the service. These helpful people working here are incredibly accommodating. Third, would be the food. No bells or whistles going off here. Just down home, real, authentic delicatessen food that is being served. Max and Benny's is huge. There is so much room to move in this immense building, I could only imagine if this place sold out? That would be crazy! I had a very good pastrami on rye with deli mustard (not hot dog mustard). It came with a crisp pickle and a basic cold slaw. I found this dinner to be very good without the "break your bank" prices some Deli's charge. Max and Benny's Deli, way out here in the suburbs of Chicago really worked for me! read more

Old school restaurant and deli with all of the classics -- reubens, hot open faced sandwiches, pastrami -- and most come with coleslaw and a pickle. We were also given a dinner roll with butter. I ordered the San Francisco Reuben which was different in that it had horseradish (no sauerkraut) and Monterey Jack instead of Swiss. It was piled high with corned beef, although a little chewy. It was tasty and I liked the slight changes vs the traditional Reuben. I also enjoyed a potato pancake. My companion had matzo ball soup and a corned beef sandwich. Each time I have to eat at this restaurant I hope it will be my last visit but people keep dragging me back. Tonight it was a convenient location to meet the guys..... too bad the service, food and cleanliness were poor. Our waitress was overwhelmed, too many tables and not only got some of our order wrong but couldn't get checks to list that which we ordered correctly. No butter with our rolls..... The food ranged from horrible to acceptable. The chicken gyros resembled a shoe insert, thin, brown and about a size 5 women's shoe. It was nearly impossible to cut and I can't understand why my pal didn't send it back. The chopped liver was just ok, and nothing his mother would've served. The bowl of soup was hearty and filled with noodles. The brisket sandwich was just okay. My turkey club had too much lettuce and tomato at the expense of turkey and bacon while the toast was made sometime earlier in the evening. Others have noted a lack of cleanliness and the large piece of bread lying on the floor confirmed this. This place needs a thorough cleaning and updating. I hope to not return! read more

Not sure what happened to this place, but it's not good. We went here on the 4th of July. We were only the 2nd table of diners in the whole restaurant. So, otherwise, empty. I'm sure the waitress didn't want to be there, she barely cracked a smile. She never came back to refill coffee, and was nowhere to be found so we could ask for a refill. We both had omelets with cheddar cheese, which wasn't really cheddar. It looked like a plastic wrapped cheese slice.There were mystery ingredients in my omelet. I think I was treated to zucchini and chives. Not a huge deal, but what about diners with food allergies? Halfway through my omelet, the egg was clearly not cooked. When we brought it to her attention, she took it back to the kitchen and she came back telling us the cook and the manager said it wasn't undercooked. Ummmmm, I have been cooking for 40 years and it's not hard to recognize semi clear yellow in "cooked" eggs. The hash browns were chunks of cooked potatoes with minimal brown, no taste and looked like boiled potatoes reheated. Too bad a formerly great place has gone so far downhill. read more
