I took my car to Mavis in Barnegat to get a tire repaired (it had a screw in the tread). I knew the tires were near the end of their life, but wasn't ready to replace them. I was told by Jamie, the manager, that it couldn't be repaired because a) there was another repair within 2" of the damage, and the tires really needed to be replaced. I thought I'd seen another plug nearby (more than 2" though) so I didn't argue. I asked about the price of a set of replacement tires. Long story short, I knew from previous experience that TPMS sensors tend to go bad right about now, so I asked to replace them at the same time, but asked for a discount since they wouldn't require as much labor while new tires were being installed. He offered me a significant discount. I said okay. I also said the rear brake pads were reportedly low, and since they'd replaced them with lifetime pads (parts only; labor isn't covered), they should be replaced, and I knew the rotors needed replacing also. He gave me a number and I asked if he could do a little better and he knocked off $50. At some point, I said something I've come to regret: "I trust you guys." I'd been a loyal and consistent customer of Mavis and its predecessor companies for more than 30 years. They completed the work and he gave me the bill. It was several hundred dollars more than I expected, but it was very difficult to decipher and I'd been there a couple of hours longer than I intended. I left and when I got home, I studied the bill and determined that in addition to what I'd agreed to, I was charged for an expensive limited coverage tire protection policy and road hazard warranty, and testing the TPMS sensors, neither of which I was aware of or needed. I went back to the shop a couple of days later and fully expected them to give me a credit. Instead, I was told (by an assistant manager, I think) that since they'd given me discounts, they charged me for these other items! I told them that I'd been a loyal customer for years and had trusted them, and said "that may end here." He said I should come back the next day and talk to Jamie. I returned the next day and Jamie insisted that he'd given me clear pricing and that I'd agreed to it, and they had it on video! He said he'd talked to the Regional Training Manager, who said they couldn't or wouldn't do anything. I said I wanted to talk to the guy, and Jamie said he'd call me, but he never did. I disputed the unreasonable charges thru my credit card company, but they looked into it and determined that there was nothing they could do. So here I am with a useless Tire Protection Policy, a charge for a test I didn't need for something I asked them to replace, a very bad taste in my mouth, and no other recourse but to write a negative review. Bottom line - they made a very bad business decision. Not only did they lose me as a customer, but I hope others will think twice before trusting anything they say. read more

I went in for a routine oil change, I've trusted them with for the past 3 years. This time, they told me I needed a brake fluid change and claimed it should be done every 3 to 4 months. That immediately sounded off, especially since I had my brakes serviced less than a year ago. I trusted them and went ahead with it, thinking they wouldn't risk losing a loyal customer over something like this. But after getting home and doing some research, I realized it was a completely unnecessary service. What makes it worse is they never told me the price beforehand. What should've been a $120 visit turned into a $370 bill. The funny thing was they tried to tell me my new windshield wipers were old and needed to be replaced as well. 2/12/26 I got a synthetic oil change and tire rotation from Mavis in Barnegat, NJ It cost $137 and I was a bit shocked. An hour later, I went online to see if that was standard cost and saw a digital coupon for $20 off the oil change plus free tire rotation which would have brought the cost to around $80 which seem to be ballpark for that service. I called back and was told the digital coupon needed to be presented at the​ time of service and that I shouldn't expect the discount without the digital coupon. To keep it simple, I'm a young female who walked into a tire shop was overcharged $60. Had to fight for my refund from the manager. He insisted the price was correct. My reservation made online said otherwise. The customer service skills are non existent. Was told by a rookie "mechanic" I needed two other services performed. Two things they shouldn't have even been looking at while my car was there for JUST tires and an alignment. Not to mention both repairs were just done two weeks ago but nice try. To top it off, it's as if they have never put tires on a Volkswagen before considering every single cap that goes over my lug nuts has been drilled out and cracked. I went in for a scheduled oil change and tire rotation. Everyone was professional and courteous. After driving my car and getting home, I attempted to check the torque on the lug bolts. All 20 were warped. The following day I went back to the shop, speaking to two persons at the front desk. No one else was in the lobby. Both persons were professional and courteous. These people were advised all the lug bolts were fine before the tire rotation. However, they declared the bolts get like that from weather and corrosion. I replied, do you understand that the bolts were fine before service and now a 19mm socket no longer fits on (and I was never informed of this before driving)? Anyway, my name and number was taken and allegedly someone is going to call me. Had a flat tire last night (it was at 2)..used emergency tire kit/slime that came with car. Brought car to Mavis this morning for a patch. Told them we used the kit/slime..1st they tried saying we over inflated tire to 40..nope..dashboard and gauge said 35. Then they said they can't find a leak, yeah cause we used the 'slime'..their reply..oh yeah I forgot. They asked so you want us to clean out tire and look for leak? At the point..NO...I DONT TRUST YOU!!! I'm a woman and they tried to say I over inflated and assumed I had no clue what I was talking about AND bottom line...they didn't want to clean the mess of the slime!!!!! Beyond disappointing experience! I was told I needed front tires. They didn't have the size and said they'd order them. I had the tires installed the same day and didn't think to check them assuming they'd be correct. Next morning I realize they put the wrong size tires on the front of my car. I went back to the shop and they lied and said they had told me that they had put a different size tire on. They then said they ordered the right size but must have been sent the wrong size. Why would tire experts ever do this? You never put a larger size tire on the front of a sports car. The fact that they did this knowing it was wrong and hoping to get away with it since I was driving back to Massachusetts is unbelievable. Now I'm stuck waiting days until they get a shipment in. I have been a customer of Mavis Tire for many years now - over multiple locations. I've been exclusively going to Barnegat NJ location for nearly 5 years now. Just this Thursday (3/17), we called to make an appointment to get one of our cars in for an oil change. We said we would bring it in on Saturday and if they could get it done Saturday or Sunday that would be fine, as long as it was done by noon on Sunday. At 12:30 PM on Sunday we called to find out the status of our vehicle, and they told us that it was next in line and would be done soon. Three hours later, at 3:30 PM, we called them back again and our car still had not been serviced, but they told us to come at four to pick it up and it would be done by that point. We arrived at Mavis at 4:15 PM on Sunday, to only find out that our car had not gone in yet, and they were only bringing it in when they realized that we were there to pick it up. Additionally, when we got home, we realize that there were scratches all over the back of the trunk of our car. It was almost as if someone with keys or zippers on their sleeves had been leaning up against the car throughout the course of the day. Aggravated at this point, we called the customer service line at Mavis corporate, and they offered us a $35 credit - all they could do to make up for an entire waste of a weekend without a car. They clearly have no capability of being able to provide customers with what they need, even after they completely messed up the relationship. I am very disappointed in the service that has happened here at Mavis, it's gone completely downhill over the course of the last year. Last December (12/2020), my daughter needed front tires. The Mavis Discount Tire store in Barnegat replaced the two front tires, did a wheel alignment, replaced the front brakes and did an oil change. Now it's April 09, 2021, and my daughter told me the car was shaking and pulling so she brought the car back there. The new front tires, with less than 5000 miles on them were down to the steel belts. The manager tried to tell her these were not his tires, and that this was the fault of a bad wheel alignment. And he wanted to charge her full price for two tires and an alignment. I immediately went down there and had words with the manager. I told him he was not dealing with a woman with no knowledge of cars now, and that for tires with less than 5000 miles on them to be down to steel belts meant that the tires were either faulty, retreads, or the alignment was done completely wrong. They ended up pro rating the tires after a heated discussion, and charging me $218.92 for two new tires, a wheel alignment, and an oil change. I was glad that they pro rated the tires, but in all reality, the tires should have been replaced at no charge when they had such a low mileage on them. They were only 4 months old, and were down to the steel belts, and they just did the alignment in December. Most tires are guaranteed for ten's of thousands of miles. Just as an FYI, the manager lied when he told me that the tires only have a 3,000 mile warranty. That is pure BS. That store in Barnegat just lost a good long time customer. I will also be relating this to all my friends and family. This is inexcusable. The work they did was substandard, and the car was dangerous to drive, and the manager in that store was anything but apologetic about this situation. In fact, he was rather indignant about this. That sort of customer service is inexcusable, and not at all up to the quality I expect from this chain of stores. read more

Once the car was towed there, we were told a completely different price after they tried to upsell the replacement of another tire (mind you 3 of the 4 tires were just replaced at the same shop 1 to 1.5 years ago. Yesterday I brought my vehicle in for an oil change. (Second time). It was nice for once to receive a quote over the phone and have it be true to what I was quoted. I also observed how Cody was with other customers and he truly knocked the ball out of the park with his professionalism and demeanor, even with a not so nice customer. I've been going to Mavis on West Bay Avenue in Barnegat for many years even when it was STS Auto. I used to pay $26 for an oil change last month I went there they charged me $46 for the same oil change and the guy that changed my oil stripped my oil pan plug so I developed an oil leak. So I called today for an oil change and specifically asked for conventional oil and the man on the phone old man that would be $54!! I said are you sure because I just want conventional oil not synthetic and he said yes. So needless to say I will not be going there anymore for the overpriced and poor service they offer it's a shame because it was a good location to where I live. It's sad because when it was STS I got good service there and the people were accommodating. You take a look at how downhill they went since Mavis took over the little things like how clean the waiting room is they took the coffee machine away and some of the people there I do have attitudes as if we're bothering them. I know I'm just one person out of many but feel this way and there are people that love the place that's fine but I'm just voicing my opinion and my experience. One other experience I've had with them happened about a 2 years ago went in for an oil change everything was fine till I got down by the Parkway and I smelled oil burning so when I had a chance to pull over I open the hood and the technician forgot to put the oil cap back on the engine so it blew out oil all over the engine compartment. I should have known then find a new place to get something as simple as an oil change and now the price of $54 for a conventional oil change is absolutely unacceptable. read more

Front desk guy was very nice and fit my car in at the end of the day. Jokes on me because they spilled oil all over my engine. Didn't tell me and while very pregnant I drove north only to pull over because smoke was coming from my engine, I couldn't see and it was coming in my air vents. It was 930pm and raining and once again I was heavily pregnant and I had to pull over into an empty parking lot to check it out. Once it had cooled and I popped the hood I saw oil everywhere. For weeks after I'd have to drive short distances until the oil burned off and coincidently a week after this oil change I ended up needing $800 in repairs when there was nothing wrong before I took it to Mavis. I called ahead of time to mount a tire to a rim and install it on my car, they quoted me $20 for the wheel and i took it to them. After 30 minutes to an hour, they finished, however, they ended up charging me $50 for the job. They said "well because of labor it's $50 instead of $20) I brought my own tire and my own tim, all I needed was installation, they wouldn't accept anything less not even the price they quoted me for over the phone. Came here the day before and they told me it would take about an hour and $200 to fix my truck. It ended up taking over 4 hours and costing more than $500. Mechanic stood around playing on his phone for 2 hours. Told me I couldn't take my vehicle somewhere else when they told me the price. Never paid me back for faulty services!!!!! Charged excessively for services not performed or needed!!!! I have spent over 1,500 dollars in unnecessary services when this was STS. They were rude, and after much back and forth they said they would reimburse me for those unnecessary and faulty services. I called and called and never received reimbursement. Then this places was bought by Mavis. Beware!! This place is the same poor quality place just a new name. And the new place has done nothing to helping the old concerns do NOT go here. I took the car to Another facility and they fixed it (an oil leak was the problem) in one visit and have had no problems since. When the vehicle is finally finished you are given a laundry list of all the things they say are wrongful with your vehicle. I had a terrible experience here. I had an issue where my brake lights would remain on when the head lights were on. I dropped it off for an oil change and asked them to check I out. When I came back the manager told me that it was because someone had put the wrong bulb in so they changed the bulb and itnwas over $125. Over $100 to change a light bulb. I took a minute outside to think and went back in and said that I had never asked them to do the work and that i never would have agreed to pay that price. He deducted a few bucks but still it was $75 for an oil change and to change a bulb. And I never agreed to it. He tried to make himself out like he was doing me a favor and kept repeating that I told him to just fix it when I dropped it off... like the price wouldn't have made a difference. I know that most places say they are not responsible for lost or stolen items but when I have tires put on my truck and an expensive center cap is stolen, that was there when I dropped it off, they should have owned up to it. My boyfriend and I were traveling from Bridgewater, NJ to Cape May, NJ for vacation when our trucks ABS and Brake lights went on. We some how made it to Mavis from someone who pointed us in the right direction. We were half way towards our destination and just wanted to start enjoying our vacation! The manager Rich and and mechanic Anthony, who worked tirelessly on our truck took such good care of us.They were able to correctly diagnose our electric problem and because of them, we were able to get to Cape May and enjoy our last vacation before our first baby arriving in December! Who knew a tire place could help us out like a car mechanic could! They kept us up to date on everything that was going on and really treated us well.
