This sweet little shop will capture your heart. The couple working here were adorable and so kind. They let me practice my Spanish and genuinely seemed Tô live what they do. I asked if they had veggie empanadas around 8 am (planning for lunch) and the guy originally said no but the lady in the back yelled that they were in the oven. What a win! They had mixed veggie, broccoli and spinach. I tried to get one of each but ended up with two of each. Whoops. Empanadas for days. They're about $4 each. The broccoli plain was a bit too much... well broccoli. The broccoli with cheese was better. My friend liked it more than me. The other two were good. Split the Cuban empanada (amazing) and a veggie wrap that was overflowing with avocado, hummus, almonds, cranberries and lots of veggies! Miraculously found street parking right in front! It took 2 seconds for me to decide this was a 5 star review. I had the chicken empanada. It is stuffed with what seems like an entire chicken. And it is super moist and juicy and wonderfully simple. This is an absolute treat. The pastry is all homemade- all of it is homemade and then she freezes them. They are good though. They don't always have what you want. She might heat one up if you ask, but it will take 20 mins or so. Other types are ham and cheese, there is a supreme which is like a mini calzone with multiple meats in it, only a couple of veggie options, and a seafood and rice one which I was looking forward to but she never had them hot when I was there. There are no other Mavis, so if you want this empanada you have to come here. I think it's an excellent reason to come to San Juan. It's a pretty bloody good empanada. read more

Somehow, despite making a giant list of all the amazing food places I had to visit while I was in San Juan for a week a few months ago, I just completely missed this one. Thankfully, I was walking by one day, and decided to pop in to look at their menu, then I had to try one, and yeah, they make pretty much the greatest empanadas ever, for super cheap. I tried several of them, though I no longer remember exactly which ones, but I did try several, and they were all super delicious. Perfect crust, totally stuffed with stuffing, and tons of choices, both standard and somewhat less standard. Really wish there was a place like this where I live. My only real complaint, which I also remember, is when I showed back up the following day soon after they opened, hoping to grab a couple more of the more interesting flavors I hadn't gotten to try the previous day so we could take them out with us for lunch elsewhere in PR... they only had a couple flavors, which were the most common ones. To get the full range, you have to show up around lunch time, apparently. read more

Viejo San Juan was one of the ports that we stopped at on my cruise. It was nice to explore familiar places as well as a few new ones...Mavi was new to me. Initially, we chose to stop here because of the fresh squeezed lemonade sign. However, once inside my eyes quickly fixed on the frozen mojitos. Of course, I had to have one of these! I had to suffer through the wonderful smell of empanadas as we waited for the drinks to be made. Since I had just eaten on the ship, I was too full to try them. The frozen mojitos were very much worth the wait. Cold, just the right amount of sweet and not too strong. They have a beer and empanada special for $5.25...one day, I'll be back... The 3 of us sat at the bar and ordered local beers and a Mavi soda which the waiter said was similar to root beer. In addition we shared 2 delicious empanadas: broccoli & mozzarella, ham & cheese.
