We were getting ready to meet a tour and needed something quick to eat. This place was recommended to us and it was just around the corner so we stopped in. They had all kinds of pastries and little sandwiches and chocolates and much more. We grabbed some chocolates and two little tomato and cheese sandwiches to go. It was relatively quick although they didn't speak good English. But we are in Spain right? So you order the pay at another register. We stepped out and just sat along the wall and dig in. For such a small quick sandwich, it was unbelievingly delicious and just the right amount for a quick bite to eat. I almost wished I had ordered one more because it tasted so good. The hotel staff recommended me to this pastisseria for breakfast. We walked there from our hotel near Casa Mila , it's about a 3 minute walk Convenient for us. It's located in the Corner by La Ramble Calle. When we got there we sat outside As they offer dining outside but a few groups sat outside were smoking cigarettes. Any outdoor patio in Barcelona you can smoke. (Ewww , i can't bear being around cigarette smoke.) I asked to be seated inside the building they sat my group down right away with no problem. We order off their menu Of the day. Menu changes daily. We order gazpacho very good , cold and refreshing for these hot days in Barcelona. Now this is a Cafè! With tons of different desserts, sandwiches, and pastries. It's fairly big with seating on the side and in the back. The staff are friendly here and clean up the place quick after each customer. We ordered a lemon tart Llimona, and a cream filled pastry Nuria. Both were outstanding with a nice creamy taste. We came here for a quick breakfast before heading over to Casa Mila. They're located within close proximity to Casa Mila, so it was a great place to grab a bite before our reservation. The food was good and was a great small meal before our attraction visit. Mauri has plenty of pastries and small bite sandwiches, which are perfect for a quick snack. Everything is also displayed in the glass counters, so you can easily pick out whatever looks appealing to you. The desserts here are fabulous, in presentation and taste. I had what the loveliest cream filled pastry that was similar to the Paris Brest in look but without the almonds on top. My coffee was the perfect accompaniment. I came on a Saturday late afternoon and I could tell the staff had had their fill of tourists like me stumbling over high school Spanish from many (too many) moons ago so sure they weren't the most patient with me and my squeaky, stilted request for coffee and questions about where to pay but I get it, my failure to practice more of their language when coming to their country is on me (although even if I had practiced more the anxiety when put on the spot seems to just wipe my brain clean anyway). I'm actually not giving this a full five stars because I do think if they made it clear where to pay and when to pay it would make things a lot easier for them and social anxiety ridden ppl like me. Not like I want to tell people how to run their business but a suggestion to make life easier for the staff and us dumb tourists who are itching to spend money for good food and drinks on vacation. This place is pretty great especially for those that are in the mood for different types of sandwiches or bocadillo as they call it. I did a take away order and so I'll do a review of my experience since it was a bit different. When you enter there are cases of chocolate and sandwiches and pastries. When you come in you need to grab a number from the door counter. When your number is called then you get to order. It's a good idea to figure out what you want before your number comes up. This is a very busy establishment and no one wants to wait too long. After you finish the staff will hand you a card. You turn around and there's a cashier where you pay. After you pay the original staff will give you your goodies. I ordered three sandwich. The one with the brie and fig like jam, Tuna salad, salmon salad. While waiting for our entry time at La Pedrera (they really would not let us in an hour early), we found this lovely little French style cafe nearby. There was no wait on a weekend afternoon, and the pastries are displayed in brightly lit trays as you walk in. The staff was very friendly and spoke English well enough. Besides the huge array of pastries and small bites, they have a great selection of beverages (including some delicious looking teas). Their pasties were nice and light, fluffy and not coated in sugar. The mini sandwiches are delicious and just the right portion to allow you to try more than one. Great little bakery right around the the corner of Passeig de Garcia. There was so many delicious looking treats, it took me some time to really decide what I wanted. I ended up getting a croissant de jamón, ensaimada and a cappuccino. There are several different sandwiches, but I really liked the croissant de jamón. The ensaimada was ok (I think I was looking for the Filipino version haha). But the cappuccino was good! I haven't had one as good as the ones I had in Italy - this one is pretty close. Little FYI: you get what you want from the bakery, then they'll give you a ATM looking card. It's open late, that is a huge plus. Can be really busy and loud in the afternoons, and there are signs that warn against pickpockets, so watch your stuff. You order at the pastry counter, point at the ones you want, they give you a tray and a credit card on which they load your running tab. Order your coffee at the coffee bar, have them swipe your card. Coffee is always hot, cups are warmed. Pastries are fluffy and creamy, but not heavy... the kind your Grandma would really enjoy. To say this restaurant was "good" or "tasty" would be a complete understatement. I enjoyed this spot so much that I came twice in two days while vacationing in Barcelona. The menu of the day, or menù del día was absolutely exceptional both days. The portions are great, especially by dainty European standards. It consists of three courses and a drink for 13. My selections for the second day I visited: The first course I chose was a Fideo paella with seafood. There was a very nice amount of mussels, clams, and calamari mixed in with the noodles. The second course I selected was a cordon bleu. All I can say was that it was potentially the best I've ever had. The cheese was wonderfully melted, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. The final course is a selection from their desserts. Here is where they absolutely shine. Both days had a different assortment of pastries. I had a mousse chocolate cake. Which was absolutely impeccable. Perfect amount of sweetness, and whipped wonderfully. If this wasn't enough they have a wide assortment of bocadillos to try as well. I got a little mushroom quiche, a spinach quiche, and a piece of sweet bread to go. The crusts for the quiches were so flaky and sweet. The egg and mushroom combined so well. Finally, the restaurant is super well-staffed. I would return in an instant. I wish there was a Mauri where I lived. read more

Staying next to the Rambla de Catalunya affords an array of food shops and restaurants. Mauri is one of the best pastry shops, and it was a godsend that they were just a block from where we stayed. And they open extremely late so one can either buy whatever pastries they still have on offer or have a late evening snack there. We opted for the former. We were leaving for home and wanted to take back some pastries so we got the croissants with butter and without. All were excellent. I have to admit that they were better than the ones at the Forn de Sant Jaume. Mauri's another old style pastry shop where the clerk will wrap each pastry individually. In fact, she put each one in a bag and taped it shut then all of the items went into one of their nice shopping bags. Won't say that the server was welcoming though. Not like the lady at the Forn de Sant Jaume, but really it's the pastries (and sweets) that one is there for. read more
