Huge fan of MauiWine. I was talking to a former sommelier and he said that MauiWine was producing some great sparkling pineapple wine. As a oenophile I had to visit! First off, the drive here is beautiful. Superb views of Maui and really cool change of environment from the beach seen we grew accustomed to during our stay on Maui. Second, make sure you make a reservation! We were lucky to get one on Resy and they seated us at a very nice table on the patio. Third, do both the pineapple and the regular tasting! Both were great. I loved the Hula o Maui (the sparkling pineapple), which had great complexity, acidity, and overall nice dry flavor profile. I ended up buying three bottles, and would have picked up more if we had room. Overall, this is a must visit on the island. Wonderfull staff, great wine, and super views. Two thumbs up! read more

The drive up to MauiWine made me nauseous due to the winding roads. However once we made it to the top it was worth it. The view from up top is amazing. We had made reservations a few weeks ago at opening and there were a few groups who were already there waiting. When it was time, the host checked us in and brought us to our tables. At the time, there were two tasting options or you could purchase by the glass. Since we had a large group, we had both tastings. We also opted for the cheese and cracker plate. Wines are ok. I think my favorite was probably the Kula white blend. We all enjoyed the experience. The best part was probably exploring the guava jam that they served with the cheese plate. We all bought a few jars to take home. Overall it was a pleasant experience that was different while visiting hawaii. read more

WOW!!!! We drove 1 1/2 hours to try this place, and it was a huge highlight of our trip. First of all just the drive itself was absolutely breathtaking. My boyfriend and I were just in awe the entire drive. It is so gorgeous. The place itself is to die for. The cutest little tasting room ever. The pineapple wine exceeded my expectations. I really should of brought a few bottles home!! The appetizer was so yummy too. On a rainy day this made for the perfect spot. We did get to try one taste of one wine and it was wonderful. But we couldn't order a full tasting nor food without a table. And no table without a reservation. A wine place in Ulupakalua, Upcountry Maui. Something different to do that offers a few locally made wines, and other wines... So if you need something different to do and don't mind a drive into the countryside, check out this place. They offer wine tasting and serve appetizers to go with it. Not like those vineyards and wineries like in Napa or other places, but a nice, quiet place to try some flights of locally produced wines, and other imported wines. It takes about a 30 min drive from Pukalani, or over 50 min from Kahului, so plan accordingly! Nice views of Maui's southern shores from the mountain and views of Kahoolawe and Molokini Islands as you drive there. When walking the grounds, they have a building that you can rent for private parties, and what seem to be another building that could be for a private wine tasting. read more

We've absolutely loved every visit to MauiWine over the years. It's a bit of a drive to get there but so worth the trip! We love the tasting flight to start, and then they always have a limited release or two to try. My absolute favorite is the sparkling pineapple wine. The option to have it in cocktail form with a sugar cube is also divine. Come hungry for some delicious snacks including cheese plates and small apps. I highly recommend stopping by Maui Wine during your trip! The property is beautiful and the staff is really friendly. I got the Rose Ranch tasting and my dad got the estate. We shared and I was able to taste both and I loved them. I also ordered a glass of the Maui Splash and it was great! Mauiwine has an unusual tasting process. They offer pre-selected flights red, white and reserve, or you can order a glass. You are seated at a table and need a reservation to taste. When the server came by, we ordered 2 glasses since we didn't like the selection of flights they offered. When she came back with our cheese plate, I asked about the sparkling wine on the menu and then learned they had 2 other flights available that were not on the menu. That would have been great to know BEFORE we placed our order. Their selection of bites is limited and not that tasty and their service is slow. There's just something about that upcountry air and feeling that I've fallen in love with over the years and that view, man that view. Nothing like that drive over to Ulupalakua and those killer mountain and ocean views. I've passed by the winery many times throughout the years, but it was only a few months ago that I decided it was finally time to stop by. With all the COVID-restrictions, I thought it best to make reservations ahead of time. The King's Cottage Tasting Room is available for reservations and they're open from 11 am-5 pm, Wednesday-Sunday, with last seating at 4pm. It's not required, but highly recommended, and I had the peace of mind knowing we had guaranteed seats at a set time. We were able to find parking quite easily despite it being quite full. We walked up to the entrance and were seated within 5 minutes. It was raining on and off and so we opted for the covered seating in the back. They offer wine by the glass, wine flights, and wine cocktails along with some small bites of cheese, crackers, and chips. We all opted for wine flights to taste a variety of wines. I went for the pineapple tasting which included Hula O Maui, Maui Blanc, and Maui Splash. I am not really a wine drinker, but I did enjoy my choices and found them light and tasty. My favorite was the Hula O Maui which is their pineapple sparkling with lemon zest. We also got small bites of the brie happy and olive it along with gluten free crackers which paired very well with our drinks. I really enjoyed the brie. They ran out of their rose guava rose jam, but whatever they substituted it with was quite tasty as well. We had a long afternoon enjoying their wine and conversations with light drizzles of rain to accompany us. The weather was perfect and just love how 'upcountry' and cozy it felt with the trees and manicured landscape. Just perfect, just beautiful. We stayed quite a while, but never felt rushed and the service was great. They provided umbrellas for trips to their bathroom, located in a cute building up the hill. Overall, really nice first experience. Tours are not currently being offered, but I would love to experience it in the future. No groups larger than 5 which they seem to adhere to strictly. If you're just popping in to grab a gift, guests can shop the winery boutique without a reservation. If you think you'll get hungry, plan ahead. We did and ordered to-go at the Ulupalakua General Store across the way prior to closing so that we had something to fill us up after our drinks and it worked out perfectly! Completely lovely experience. The drive was pleasant with lots of beautiful places to stop for views. We had a reservation at 11 which is right when it opened - there were several people already waiting since they emphasize the drive may take a while. The grounds were beautiful - reminded me of being in the south. We were seated right away and the service staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We had two of the appetizer places which were small but also flavorful - we ended up buying some of the jelly that accompanied it. The wine tastings were also pleasant - I was shocked to find out the grapes were grown on the island! They have two flights to choose from: a pineapple flight where all 3 wines are made from pineapple and another one where they are made from grapes. We opted for the pineapple given how unique it was. They were a bit refreshing and we are glad we got to try them but didn't take any home. Our favorite was the Maui Blanc, then the pineapple sparkling, then the last one (I forgot the name but it was the really sweet pineapple one - not a huge fan). Skip the Brie happy. We really did not enjoy the Brie. We also got the ginger beer, which we loved! Very refreshing. Be sure to make reservations on resy. They seem to only be taking reservations. The sign out front says walk ins welcome but when we went, there was another sign that said they were fully booked and not taking walk ins. We enjoyed sharing two flights so we could taste an array of wines made from either pineapples or grapes. It was unfortunate that outside of the tasting menu, single tastings weren't a purchasing option... I understand wanting to benefit from selling a glass of wine versus a tasting, however with the location and the need to drive home, this limited our exposure to the wines. Aside from that, we did taste enough to purchase wine for us and for gifts. And, in doing so, we learned that case discounts aren't available. What a bummer. Based on what we wanted, we did buy 12 bottles... however, I will say that without that purchasing incentive, my need to return for more is very limited. So, while they received one sale from us, there won't be any follow up business. In case you are reading this far, do know that they offer small bites and don't allow in outside food. The hostess was very nice and got us a table fairly timely. Most of us tried the pineapple tasting and one friend did the rose one. In my opinion, pours were pretty small for the price ($12) and we enjoyed some appetizers (Brie and meat/cheese bowl) but again for the price especially if you are sharing with a group this is a small portion. My favorite pineapple one was the blanc, the sparkling was super sweet. Our server did spill wine on one of us but appropriately comped their ticket. Worth the drive for the views! The road up is lush, you can see breathtaking views of the whole island below and the ocean. You actually will see clouds that block the view below that make you feel like you are driving above the earth There's hand carved wood sculptures in front of the winery and wine tasting available. While we didn't taste, we bought two bottles to go. One was called Maui Splash (made just from pineapples) & the other was called Mele (red blend). I was super excited to try this place out when visiting Maui. Reservations are a must as there is limited seating and you have 90 minutes to enjoy the wine. What I really enjoyed was the journey coming up here. It takes about 45 mins. to get here from the airport. It is the same route to go up to Haleakala. Even though it's a bit of a drive, you are greeted by ocean and island views. We made a few stops on the side of the roads for pictures and just to sit and relax to enjoy the view. When we got to the winery, it was cool and not as hot since we were up so high. They had a nice garden and places to walk around and take a look at the different structures. The staff was very friendly and helpful, we got there earlier than our scheduled reservations so we just had to wait a few minutes so they could get our sets ready. It was an open air seating so you also get a view while dining. They always have new wines in rotation so the menu will change. My fiancé and I ordered the Pineapple Tasting and Rose Ranch Tasting flights. For the foods we got the Brie Happy and Olive It. Such a cute play on words for their food. We also tried their Wine Cocktails, I got the Lehua Royale and my fiancé got the Blood Orange Fizz. The Pineapple Drinks were my favorite, more on the sweeter side. The Rose Ranch flight was also delicious as red wines are usually my go to. The Wine Cocktails, Lehua Royal was like a sparkling raspberry soda, while the Blood Orange Fizz was like a classic mimosa. I really loved the small bites we got too. It went really well with the wine and tasted amazing. Loved the lilikoi jam that came with the Brie Happy. You can also join their membership to get wines shipped to you every 6 months I believe. It was an amazing experience and the staff were always checking up on us and how we were doing. We are not expert in wine, but the staff made us feel comfortable and was able to recommend us the different drinks as well as telling us the notes for each drinks that was served to us. As a Californian, I found the wine to be mediocre, lacking in complex bold flavors, and overly sweet. It's a windy drive to get up here from the main area - lots of tight turns on narrows roads. But if you're a good driver (particularly if you're used to driving on HW1 in California), this is easy. The view is gorgeous coming up here as well. We came here exactly at 2 pm to catch the free tour - our guide did a great job of explaining the history of the winery itself and its ties to one of Hawaii's former kings. She also spoke of the trees on the property and some of the stories behind them, like lighting striking one of the trees often. It also granted you access to the facilities where they made the wine, so you got to see a little bit into their process. It was pretty interesting learning how they went about using pineapples to make wine. For example, grapes are seasonal and pineapple is year round. Also they would feed the leftover pulp the to cows on the other side of the road. If you can catch the free tours that happen at 10:30 am and 2 pm, I recommend it. As for the wine tasting... we did a flight for two where we got to try a bit of everything. At $15 for a tasting flight, it seemed like a great deal - but we're also used to Napa/Sonoma area where tastings can be 2x. However, the winery itself was very busy and the folks pouring gave little information about each wine. This is probably due to how crowded it was inside. Pour amounts were fair though and one of the gals let us have a chocolate snow piece to have with our dessert wines. You could walk around the patio area and come back inside for your next pour. To be frank, this is a great place for people trying to get into wine - the wines are lighter and on the sweeter side. There isn't as much depth or complexity as what I find on the mainland (Norcal here, so I go to Sonoma and Napa a lot). Especially the reds - those were our least favorite of the tastings here. That said, the wine didn't wow us enough to buy it. I was looking forward to trying the pineapple wine (Maui Blanc), as that was a novelty. They even had other variations of pineapple wine. At the end of the day, it really did taste like pineapple juice that had gone bad, heh. It was even worse at dinner when we ate Maui gold pineapples while drinking the wine. It made the contrast even more robust. Had we not come here for the free wine tour, I am not sure if there would have been more to do beyond the OK wine tasting. The grounds themselves are pretty to walk around, but the tour gives more significance to them. I recommend planning on coming here to catch the tour, or try going on one of their private wine tasting sessions in the "jail". Otherwise it's something to do if you're in the area, but I wouldn't say it's worth going out of you way for. For our experience (not the wine), 4 stars it is. read more

*ZERO STARS IF I COULD* Horrible encounter with the hostess Alicia. Found this place from a friend who recently went here and saved it to add to a Maui trip with my family. I never looked at their website just saved it. Came up right when they opened at 11am. Once I got there, yes, I noticed the signs that there are reservations only but on their Yelp website and on their signs on property they say "WALK INS WELCOME". My problem is this: 1. I was NEVER greeted by Alicia even though I was waiting in front of the hostess podium for a good amount of time. I even let her take care of seating everyone who had reservations before I approached her. By all means I could have very well had a reservation. 2. When I asked if I could be added to list she said that the wait would be very long. I said that I didn't mind and asked to be put on the waitlist. She refused to even put me on a WAIT LIST. 3. On top of that, her attitude, demeanor and hosting skills were unprofessional and lacked Aloha spirit. You'd think that a business on sacred Hawaiian land that this business would train their staff to have Aloha and be welcoming and friendly REGARDLESS if they have full reservations or not. 4. I had to ASK if we could walk the property or see anything else since instead to where she replied I could only go in and purchase a bottle "TO GO ONLY"!!!!!! Wouldn't a well trained staff member offer these options on their own or in the least say, "sorry"???? (to which we never got). We left immediately and ran into others in the lot who also claimed they were treated rudely by her for not having reservations. This place is NO Mama's Fish House it's a winery that's in the middle of land and takes over an hour to get to. If they keep this up with their customer service as guests there is NO amount of wine that can keep people coming back.
