The BEST place to turn your #vanlife bed into a real bed. I have a MB Sprinter that I sleep in every time I need to travel for work, races, or because my wife tells me to take the dog and go travel somewhere. The couchbed this thing came with was garbage, and I tried several different mattress toppers and mattresses. All of them either didn't match the atypical dimensions of the bed, or would tear, or both. Mattress Makers solved this problem by building us a custom mattress that can fit the odd dimensions of the couchbed perfectly, it also has memory foam that is as good as the memory foam bed we have at home, and they were able to notch the corners so it doesn't get bunched up and lies flat unlike the stock square mattresses. Our size is in between a king and queen, and they measured and made it fit PERFECTLY. My wife and I spent quite a bit of time doing our research, and when we stepped foot into Mattress Makers in La Mesa, Sam took us throughout every step of choosing the correct mattress for us. Hubby and I were looking to upgrade from our tempurpedic that we've owned for less than a year because he's a hot sleeper and could not get a good nights rest without burning up. He had researched a lot of different materials and decided latex was it. It is eco-friendly, breathable, has longevity and most importantly, super comfortable! We stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon and was greeted by Sam. He was extremely easy to talk to, very professional and did not pressure us into anything. He listened to our needs and recommended two styles based on what we voiced to him. We were there less than 30 minutes and found our mattress - I believe it was the Presidio Plush. We have been sleeping in it for under a week now, but I'll tell you what, it is the most amazing mattress we've slept on. We sleep through the night without any issues. I wasn't home for when they delivered it, but my husband said the employees were equally amazing. They also offer a 180-day sleep guarantee, but I don't think we'll be making any adjustments or refunds, ever. First, the pros... Sales: Mattress Makers is family-owned and operated by three brothers: Gabe, Pablo and Sam. Every time we visited their La Mesa store or called on the phone, one of the brothers helped us. Sam was the one who helped us make our final decision, but we never felt rushed or pressured. We lingered for so long that Sam offered us quarters to extend our parking meter time. (It's a good thing he reminded us too, because we were so relaxed we completely forgot about the parking meter!) Product: Mattresses are made to order, to your comfort specifications, and are made from natural materials like latex... some completely organic if that's your thing. There was a "new bed smell" the first few days, but after a week we didn't smell it at all. We bought the Del Mar Plush model in a California Split King, with an eye to the future when we can afford an adjustable base. It has a 20-year warranty, and that's saying something! They also have a 180-night comfort guarantee. In other words, if your mattress is too hard or too soft, they will work with you to get it right! It has a zipper on the pillow top part so they can change out the top easily, and even customize it to each sleeper. We adjusted to ours the first night, so we didn't need to take advantage of this service. Price: We thought at first that all this personal service and customized product would be expensive, but found that their prices are competitive with the other big furniture/mattress stores in town. (And we laid around in several other stores!) It's great knowing you can support a small local family business and not pay a premium for it! Delivery: Delivery was on time. In fact, they came early, after calling to see if it was convenient for us. Uriel and Jason were friendly and helpful as well as efficient. They answered all our questions and hauled away our old saggy mattress and box springs. (Good riddance!) Conclusion: We highly recommend Mattress Makers for all the reasons listed above, and plan to buy from them again. You will enjoy the no-pressure sales. It was a delight! Cons... They aren't open on Sundays: the only day parking is free on La Mesa Blvd. But if you're hesitant to put a few quarters in the meter while you're spending 1000s of dollars on a sleep system, well, that says more about you than this company. I'm building a camper van and needed a very odd sized bed. Did not relish the thought of buying a mattress and then performing surgery to make it fit. I read all kinds of horror stories from others describing fiberglass nightmares unleashed by the cutting of these mattresses. Very fortunately I found Gabe and this company. They made my bed exactly to fit, complete with a joint near the middle so that the mattress can convert to a recliner and custom wing on one side to fit the back corners of the van. I had no idea that memory foam mattresses are sprayed with fires retardant in CA prior to delivery. Who wants to sleep on a bed of chemicals?!?! I was looking for an alternative to memory foam, that was organic and healthy and was really happy to find a business who focuses on this 100%, 10 mins from my home. This review is long overdue, but wanted to give the product try before committing! There was never a question about the customer service. I was confident with our selection but wanted to confirm. Customer service was outstanding and the product can't be beat. Pablo was super helpful and patient as we took our time and tried out pretty much every bed in the store. Great place to shop for a new bed! This is a family owned business that cares about customer satisfaction. They take time with you to make sure you get what you want and never was there any pressure to buy. It took me 3-4 visits to the store. I kept returning because I found a bed I wanted, but needed to shop around and do my research. After doing so, I decided this was the business I wanted to support. Not to mention it is in my community, all the more reason to give them my business versus a big box store. We purchased the Del Mar Plus with the adjustable base and we love it! It is super comfortable for both a side and stomach sleeper and the firmness is perfect. We weren't sure if it would be too soft, but the company has a really good comfort guarantee. My husband and I decided to head to Old Town La Mesa early one Saturday morning for breakfast. It's such a cute area and lots of yummy places to eat. After having a great breakfast we decided to stroll around and window shop. So many fun shops in the area. It was still a bit early, but Mattress Makers was open, unlike all the other shops. (It was around 9:30a) We walked in curious to check out the custom pillow machine. We were greeted by both owners and then helped by Pablo. What a nice guy! I kept him busy with a billion questions and trying out different types of filling for a pillow. He was so nice, attentive, and fun the whole time. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in what he does and in his business. I wanted a specific size pillow and Pablo was kind enough to give me his email so I could email him dimensions for a price. He said they could absolutely accommodate my needs. We had our daughter with us who was getting a bit fussy and in the back area of the store is this adorable kids corner! It had books, a play kitchen, cushy rug, duplo blocks with a table, tv, and my daughter had a blast playing there(So much do that I ordered some of the toys off Amazon after, haha). What a genius idea because it allowed me to shop and ask questions without a squirmy toddler in my arms. The entire time we were there, the other owner was helping out a couple as they tried out several mattresses. He was so attentive to them and knowledgeable that it peaked my curiosity about their mattresses so I asked Pablo even more questions! My six month intensive search for the ultimate mattress is over!!! I have finally found my new mattress. WOW am I impressed! I got the Del Mar model in Plush. This is a Latex Hybrid mattress, it is very well designed and well made by people who obviously take pride in their craft. This Hybrid mattress is super springy and bouncy. It feels like I'm laying on a giant boingy marshmallow. Turns out that I love the buoyant floaty magical feel of Latex. You have to go lay down on one to experience it. I love that the top cover of the Mattress Makers mattresses can be unzipped so that the Latex layers may be easily swapped out for different firmness levels if necessary. They offer a free, one time option within 180 days, to swap out the Latex pad if I want to change the firmness level. This made my decision to get a Mattress Makers mattress that much easier. There is nothing worse than having buyers-remorse over something this substantial. Something that you have to live with for years to come. For me, this firmness swap out option was another big influence on my decision. I've been to countless furniture and mattress stores. Been badgered by so many high pressure sales people. People trying to enter my name and info in their computer systems for further badgering. Had one guy write his final offer price on a folded piece of paper and slide it across the counter to me, he couldn't just verbally tell me. Everyone is trying to close the deal. I think I'd rather go shopping for a new car. When I walked into Mattress Makers I could tell it was a different kind of mattress store. Genuinely friendly, honest and decent people. Ok, I hardly ever review places but this place deserves it! This place is AMAZING!!! It is a family owned company with 3 brothers running it. I had the pleasure of working with all three over the year we purchased from them. We went to La Mesa location but they also have another location near Miramar Rd. So I had a major health issue a couple years ago and revamped my whole lifestyle. Part of that was switching to organic/healthy linens and mattresses. We purchased a queen mattress and crib mattress from them late 2018 and the top layer had a small tear in the corner. We decided to leave it to avoid an additional trip, as they encourage you to see how the top layer firmness is over a few months before you decide if it needs to be changed out. We told them this was the plan and they were awesome about everything, stating they could replace the layer whenever it worked for us. We ended up needing a firmer layer so we switched it out in early 2019 and again, had friendly service. They are truly dedicated to making sure you are happy with the end result and understand that it is an expensive investment. We we're so happy we even purchased an organic sheet set, organic crib mattress cover, and then healthy pillows with covers (they have different options and make them right in front of you!) We loved the experience so much that we got my SIL healthy pillows for Christmas too. These people are just genuinely good people and care about the community. They are philanthropic and even have a healthy kids area with wooden toys! I would highly recommended this place if you need a mattress! Support this business! :) read more

Thanks to the other great Yelp reviewers, I didn't even bother wasting my time at any other stores. The service I received here was awesome and the sleep I've been having on my Soledad medium mattress has been amazing! I've never slept better. I only wish I had gotten this mattress sooner. I debated between the Soledad and the Del Mar, but felt the Soledad, with its later of wool, was easier to sit up in from laying down, sounds silly, but it made a difference when I was testing them. The icing on the cake is my 4.5 lbs latex pillow - I think I'll have a hard time sleeping without it when I travel. I appreciate the transparency of how they make their mattresses and I like that I'm supporting a local business. Stop in and try them! read more

At first I went to a couple of the big mattress stores thinking I would get the best deal. I knew Mattress Makers was in La Mesa, but hesitated to go in as I thought a custom mattress company would be too expensive. Well, I did go in and was blown away not only by the quality and choice available, but by the more than competitive price as well. Sales people were unbelievably helpful as well. The 2 guys who delivered it were great - set it up (second floor) and showed us how to use the wireless adjustable controls. So now I have a custom setup - mattress and frame. This place is fantastic! I had a Murphy Bed that I needed a mattress for very quickly. I went online to their website and clicked on the "text us here" icon in the lower right corner. They immediately texted me and talked with me in detail about what type of mattress I was looking for and helped show me several options. My text conversation started on a Monday at 4pm and I had my new, handmade, incredibly comfortable mattress by Friday at 1pm. The same week! All during the process I was kept updated on the making and delivery of the mattress. It is exactly as described and the most comfortable mattress I've ever felt.
