I was in the market for an adjustable bed since my brother just had a brain aneurysm, and outlived being taken off life support! I needed to be ready and I've gone to four different mattress stores... after countless hours on the Internet and a couple days on my feet doing the footwork of going to stores I literally ran into & walked into MATTRESS MAKERS in La Mesa and was greeted by DANIEL, he was low-key polite, Young Man and felt like an old family, friend. But I really wasn't in the mood to talk, I need facts, numbers and information. I currently own an adjustable bed and have always had one for the last 30 years, so I know what to look for and what I want. Unfortunately I had not really, "loved" anything I had seen in the past two weeks, so my patience was low. All I can say is... Just lie down in one bed to realize this is it! But more than that, you have someone that answers your questions straight out, there is no fluff, he's quite knowledgeable and down to earth. Being an old sales person, I appreciated his demeanor and more than that his willingness to help in such a difficult situation that I found myself in. I want the best for my brother, he's been given a second chance in life... The hospital beds are hell after three months I know for a fact, this will be heaven on earth. Not only did I purchase a queen size adjustable bed, but I decided to purchase a king size for myself... Not that I needed one, but I wanted to get rid of old memories and old baggage, and I wanted to sleep on something that I liked. THE BED is fantastic, it's not good. It's not great. It's out of this world, and yes, I know I'm speaking about a bed. The service is second to none and yes, I mean that The delivery was phenomenal... Seriously, they were considerate, helpful, Took their time and had me ask them questions... They wrapped up my old adjustable bedframe, which was pretty much new. There are beds, one of many of the same makers or you can have a custom bed... MADE JUST FOR YOU. I DESERVE IT, And so do you! P. S. DANIEL. We specifically chose Mattress Makers because they promote custom firmness options, and we needed a truly firm mattress for my husband's bad back. their website says "OUR GUARANTEE OF QUALITY We give you a full 10 years to make sure you are loving your mattress. This is made possible because we make our own mattresses. Even if there's nothing wrong with your mattress and you just want to make it more comfortable, not a problem. Mattress is too firm or too soft? No problem at all, we'll adjust it. All that matters is your comfort and how it feels to you." THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THROUGH ON THAT PROMISE! By February, less than a year later, the mattress had become far too soft and unsupportive. Since we were still within the 12 month warranty period, we asked to exchange it for a firmer model. After waiting about a month, the replacement was delivered, but even the delivery team mentioned it appeared to be the same mattress. Unfortunately, it felt no different and did not solve the issue. When we contacted them again in April, still within the warranty period, we were told our option was to buy another mattress for nearly $3,000, with only a small discount offered. Very disappointing experience. If you need a genuinely firm mattress or have back issues, I would be cautious and clarify the warranty and exchange policy before purchasing. read more

We are repeat customers and here is my spouse's review after our most recent purchase: I purchased a twin size Soledad firm mattress with a Bronze adjustable base from Mattress Makers in La Mesa in the spring of 2025. I love it! It is so comfortable. Even spending more hours than usual resting and sleeping after a surgery, my back is doing very well. The coils plus the latex give great support and comfort. I love to read with the head raised and sometimes using the zero gravity setting. Pablo and Kevin were so helpful, informative, and easy to work with, and the atmosphere in the Mattress Makers showroom in La Mesa is beautiful, open, and spacious. My husband and I purchased our mattress here 4 years ago and it's hands down one of the best purchases we've ever made. I wish I could remember the name of the employee who helped us select the mattress because he was so professional, helpful, and knowledgeable. The whole process was easy, and they delivered the mattress for free. I used to go to the chiropractor regularly and didn't realize I would no longer need to do that after getting a high quality mattress. We were in dire need of a new mattress. We stopped by here and the staff was so friendly and helpful. Their mattresses are all natural and were so comfortable. The mattresses were expensive, but for $250 you can get a 10 year warranty on them, which, if I heard correctly, means if it sags at all they will replace it. They'll also exchange the foam in the mattress for you if you don't wind up liking it. There was interest free financing up to 36 months with no money down. I am so excited. I have found my dream Mattress. After months of backaches I finally decided enough was enough I needed a new Mattress. I marched myself in to their La Mesa store and was able to have Jose help me find my perfect fit. I was warned that it could take up to 8 weeks because of supply shortages but lo and behold from purchase to delivery was 2 weeks. The delivery was also seamless. They gave me a window of 1230 to 230 and they were there at 1230 on the dot! They even waited while I vacuumed under the bed! Because the Mattress is a natural material the off gassing was minimal. I have had 2 amazing nights on my new bed and looking forward to many more. It's a joy to wake up without pain or stiffness. I LOVE my mattress. I am literally grinning each night as I get into bed and feel how comfortable I am. I wanted a firm mattress and went with an all latex mattress that is somehow firm but not hard at all. I got 4 big pillows that were filled in the store. 2 buckwheat hull pillows that are great with my allergies and provide great support. On nights when I want something a little bit softer, I use one of the 2 shredded latex pillows. The latex mattress keeps my body cool and is hypoallergenic. I love it and MM can customize the mattress to your firmness preferences. Jow cool is that? I found their prices to be better than their competitors and at what I believe to be an unmatched quality. One feature that I love is the zippered mattress fabric that allows me to rotate AND flip my mattress for extended life. The mattress fabric is also dryclean-able, which again is awesome for any type of nighttime allergy sufferers. The only 'gripe' I have is that my mattress is only about 9" high (that part I love!!!) and the mattress cover I bought from them is a little too big and bunches a bit. It's really doesn't effect my sleep though and would likely be the same or worse with other covers, though too. Plus, the low profile mattress just looks great on my frame so it's an overall win. Lastly, their showroom is perfect. Its comfortable and homey unlike other mattress stores that seem designed to stress you out. I really can't recommend this company more. Waking by one day I saw they made custom pillows; what?!? This is a thing?!! Well, I needed a new pillow so I went in. First of all the gentleman who were there were friendly and welcoming. I Immediately said I wanted a pillow; and they got right down to it. I appreciate that because time is valuable, and they asked the right questions without trying to over or upsell me. So much in fact that one was working on the pillow while the other one invoice me out as they knew people were waiting for me. I won't lie, the pillows are pricey but now having slept on it for the last 5 days, I can honestly say WORTH IT! We started out with the soft mattress topper and are in the process of switching to the firm. Have had some hiccups, but let me tell you the staff is on it trying to make sure it is correct. Finally decided to write my review after having my mattress for 8 months. Walked in knowing I was going to buy a mattress from these guys. I absolutely love that they are local, give you educational marketing material throughout their store and are not pushy by any means. If you take nothing else from my review, just take this: save yourself the headache and get your mattress from here - Just eliminate all the chain stores. Seriously. I had already done some research on Dunlop vs talalay. They didn't have the talalay extra firm in stock but suggested I try the Dunlop firm and that if it didn't give me the best sleep, I can exchange it at any time. I thought, sure, why not. I tried the Dunlop firm, but it ran a little warm for me, which I expected, which is why I originally wanted the talalay. The firm or extra firm runs slightly less firm here than the mass produced mattresses, so I knew an extra firm was right for me. After about a few weeks, I called them and asked to switch out to the talalay extra firm. Without any question, they placed my order and told me to hold tight as they make it. When it was time to switch out the latex, it was an extremely swift process. The two gentlemen who had done the first delivery and the second were respectful, on time and extremely fast. They were in and out in no time. I absolutely LOVE crawling into my bed every night. I am so thankful. Investing in your health is far more important than people give credit to and sleep is heavily in that category. The offgasing is so minimal compared to other harmful mattresses and bedroom furniture and it was important for me to have something high quality and natural. From my furniture to my bed frame to my mattress, comforter, pillows - you name it. Investing in high quality material is not only beneficial to your sleep quality, but for your overall health. This mattress has my cat hunting all over it but it still looks and feels brand new. Absolutely no sinking or bulging. Was eating at a restaurant next door and saw their display of various pillow making materials sitting outside. Popped in to check it out with no real intention of buying anything. The sales person was super helpful and I tried a few pillows and found one I loved. Basically, they make a custom pillow for you with your choice of material and fill level. I went with a blend of latex and Kapok (? I think) and it is truly the most comfortable pillow I have ever had. I love it. Seems to stay cool all night long as well. My parents bought a mattress from Pablo and told me to go here, and I'm so glad I did! My husband and I bought our last mattress at the former Sleeptrain. It was expensive and great at first, but only 5 years in my back was killing me. We came at first to Mattress Makers on Sunday and they were closed. Went to Mattressfirm just in case, and it was just so bad. The guy at Mattressfirm didn't even get up to greet us or try to help us. Just hollered at us from behind his desk asking if we had questions. We waited to come back and see Mattress Makers because it looked so nice and personal. Pablo greeted us and asked our names and gave us all kinds of information. He guided us through all the options that were relevant to us and had great recommendations. We easily chose the one we wanted, and I was blown away by their concern for customer satisfaction. He even seemed to remember my parents. When we were leaving he also gave us vouchers for free glasses of wine at the wine bar next door. Such a lovely touch! I really loved that he wasn't pushy and seemed to really care about the business, which is a family business! They have satisfaction guarantees and warranties that beat the hell out of Mattressfirm! Bought a king-size DelMar mattress (combo of wrapped, inner springs, topped with changeable latex pad in a zipped pocket). Made with top-notch materials, structural design and construction, and fairly priced. Mattress transmits almost no movement from one side of bed to the other. Any sleep position is comfortable from even support from bed edges to middle. Very comfortable for two sleepers w/different preferences: soft vs. floor-firm. After buying two uncomfortable mattresses in five years, my husband finally agreed to visit Mattress Makers, which my sister had recommended highly. (I had lain on her mattress and loved it.). He had been happy with the last mattress that we bought, but sleeping on it had hurt my back. In addition he was not delighted at the prospect of spending more money on mattresses. Although Maria, our mattressologist, was extremely helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable, she was non-intrusive. It is amazing how much she knows about mattress making and how intuitive she is about customer needs. All these qualities plus her charm helped do away with my husband's reluctance to buy another mattress. Like my sister and brother-in-law, we chose a mattress that is soft on one side and firm on the other. We also solved a puzzle that is offered customers and won two pillows of our choice. I love my neck pillow. We put the other pillow in our guest room. I am sleeping much better, and my back no longer hurts in the morning. Our delivery drivers were respectful and helpful they showed us how to use our adjustable mattress and were very educated on the mattress and base and how to work it. My husband and I are big fans of Mattress Makers. We looked at two other mattress stores before being referred to Mattress Makers by a friend. The purchasing experience was very low pressure and very comfortable. We were glad though that we looked at other places first to really appreciate the experience. We shopped at the La Mesa location which is a bit of a challenge to find parking but they have plenty of quarters to help you out! We liked that the selection is not overwhelming. There are 4 or 5 base models with 3 firmness levels each. You pick up a pillow when you go in and just lay on whatever mattresses suit you. We worked mostly with Christian who was great. As we started to narrow down our choices he really stepped in to help us understand the variances between each one we were looking at. I also asked about promotions and without a bat of the eye he honored a promotion that had just ended. We bought our mattress that day! We decided on an adjustable model. My back had been hurting every morning for over a year, but now - no pain when I wake up! It did take some time to get used to the zero gravity sleeping position. We are on week four and really like it now. Delivery and take away were a breeze! We were told two weeks but they called the following Friday and delivered in one week. The delivery guys were on time and very professional. I really liked that this is a family owed operation and they even make the mattresses in San Diego! We had done a lot of searching across various mattress stores in San Diego County, both the big box hellholes and the charming mom and pop places. I can not impart enough what a great experience we had with Mattress Makers. We were initially drawn to Mattress Makers because they not only custom build mattresses, but have options to make adjustments to them to maximize comfort, all for prices on par with the other places. Pablo, one of the co-owners, was the perfect salesman. He did not crowd us but seemed always to be on hand when we had a questions. We had the choice of free sheets or custom made pillows with our purchase -- we went with the pillows of course. He made them on the spot for us. Later, when the mattress arrived a few days later than promised (understandable given we ordered around Memorial Day), he comped us some lyocell sheets. We ultimately chose the King Soledad, the latex/Spring hybrid with a wool topper. It has only been a week so far, and they repeatedly stress the mattresses will take some time to be broken in, but I cannot stress enough how comfortable this mattress is. I knew nothing about latex mattresses going into this but I am a complete convert. It's also great piece of mind that if it does become less comfortable, we have one free adjustment along with the 10 year warranty. read more
