HIRE DAN, HARD STOP!! We spent two years planning our September 2023 wedding, and we put a ton of thought into every aspect of it. A lot of our wedding was intentionally different, and we wanted to have different ways to capture and enjoy the day for years to come. There are vendors who do wedding video, and then there's Dan and Matter Video. Make the right choice and go with Dan!! He and his team spent the whole day with us, from the morning getting ready all the way until we danced the night away. And they did a perfect job of working with all the different settings, people, and vendors involved. There was a lot to capture! We had 5 different location settings, non-traditional wedding scapes, large families, moving schedules, 6 different food vendors (including the main Argentine asado cooking on site), a live band, and a separate photographer. We did our ceremony at Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga (where my husband and I met) and our reception at the Bridges Golf Club. Since the beginning of civilization weddings have been performed without a videographical record. Maybe you're a traditionalist and want to go that route. If that's you, why are you reading a review for Matter Video? If you're still reading this you very much want video proof that nuptials did, in fact, occur. Now you have three options: 1) You rely on everyone attending to hold up their phones and take some shaky video and hope they all share it later. 2) You and your loved one wear action cameras on your head during the event. 3) You hire a videographer. A professional. Someone who's done this before. I won't make you guess. The correct answer is number three. That's what we did, and let me just say they made me look better than I do in real life. My photographer recommended working with Dan for our wedding video, and after one phone call I was positive that we needed to book him. Dan is incredibly patient and answered all of my questions, and his work speaks for itself -- he's very talented and the videos he creates are works of art. Dan was also very accommodating with our date changes because of COVID, and made that part of the planning process a breeze. We ended up adding on a livestream of our wedding ceremony so that all of our guests could attend virtually. We're so glad we decided to do this! Funny story, I was in Dan Bowen's video production class back in high school so I know exactly how much time and work he puts into your film. For our wedding video: The Value: Incredible. For the amount of hours that the team spends on not just being there on your special day, but also editing behind the scenes, the value for what you're paying is so worth it. It's almost a little too worth it. There's a reason why they keep getting busier every year. The Product: Unreal. All the friends and family going crazy about it, the usual. I already knew going in I was going to get all the stable, creative shots that make your eyes go googly-woogly... but what I didn't expect was that they made decisions in the video for song choice, pacing, artistic edits based on what I** would've wanted. This review is overdue for Dan and his team! Matter Video was actually referred to me by another wedding videographer team that had moved out of the Bay Area the year prior. They came highly recommended and I immediately watched every single wedding video on their website, twice. I have never taken a recommendation so seriously. Context: My husband and I had a super small ceremony (15 people..including us) and are now having a super huge reception (because..parties are fun). The ceremony was intentionally intimate but we did want to share it widely with our community. Enter, videography. Video was going to be the only way for the rest of our family / friends to see our ceremony so it was crucial that we hired someone great. Why Dan? 1. Professional: Dan is very communicative on email and phone. You need him? He's there. And you don't feel ridiculous asking him basic questions. Also, he gets along really well with other vendors and can hang. Plus there's the basics of things like he's on the vendor list at SF City Hall, knows how to shoot in SF with various regulations (like drones), knows how to time it so he can arrive at the right time, manages a great team, produces high quality results in record time etc. etc. 2. Blends in but still directs: We liked a more natural, unscripted approach to our creative vendors and Dan did a great job of both directing us (to get the shot for the narrative) and also totally blending into the background. 3. Tailors to you: Dan was very accommodating and flexible with us in our odd Wednesday afternoon wedding + dinner + no traditional elements (no bridal party, no getting ready with family etc.) ceremony. Approximately a year ago, my then fiancé and I were going through which vendors we wanted at our wedding, and we kept going back and forth on whether to make the investment in a videographer. Finally, we made the decision to book Dan after realizing how quickly he was getting booked. Fast forward one year, after our wedding and after receiving our video, I can hands down say hiring him was the BEST decision we made. He filmed our Palm Event Center wedding in July 2018 of this year, and I do not think that anyone else would have been able to capture the essence of our day in the way he did. On the day of my wedding, I was blown away by how easy it was. My husband, who was skeptical about having someone film the whole day, had nothing but amazing things to share with me afterwards. Like all the other reviews, we have nothing but GREAT things to say about Dan & Travis (our 2nd shooter on our wedding day). Short background on our planning process - my husband and I actually booked a different videographer at first. She was just starting out and her prices were way less than the average cost. But after reviewing her work, we knew we wanted to invest in our video. So we ended up reaching back out to Dan, and luckily he was still available for our date. That was seriously one of the best decisions we made, and was worth every penny. Dan is crazy talented and has the eye for telling your story. Before we signed the contract, I watched a bunch of videos on his site from previous weddings, and I seriously teared up a few times watching - and I didn't even know those couples! Dan and Tony went above and beyond our wildest dreams when shooting our destination wedding in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. From the prep work leading up to our wedding, to the actual day of, and afterwards - they were always professional and had impeccable communication. It is so important to feel comfortable with the vendors that are by your side on your special day...and these guys are the BEST! Not only do they have the best personalities, give off the greatest energy, and are super funny, but they are insanely easy to work with. Within 24 hours we were sent a "sneak peek" of our wedding video. We loved seeing this, as it allowed us to relive some of the memories - seeing it through the eyes of our guests. Of course it was absolutely incredible and got us excited to see our full video! **Side note: My husband has a background in film and was blown away by the quality of Matter Video's work (even on the "sneak peek" video)! For the amount we paid, the quality of what we got in return (and for the turn around time) was unmatchable.** Fast forward a little less than a month and we received our full wedding video! Say what?? Less than one month?? YES! What's better than getting your wedding video earlier than expected?? Not much, honestly. We couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. We probably watched it nearly a dozen times the day we received it. We haven't been able to stop showing friends and family members and can't recommend using Matter Video for your big day enough! Matter Video was the first vendor that I booked once I was engaged. I was dead set on having them be the videographers for my wedding because I had been following their work for 3 years or so prior. They are truly an incredible team of people! Dan and his team are very laid back and make you feel comfortable on your wedding day. They were so slick that most of the time you hardly realized they were even there. They were funny and very personable as well! The turnaround time for our video was also incredibly fast. We cannot thank these guys enough for capturing the most important day of our lives. We now have this amazing memory of a video to look back on and for that I'm very thankful. My husband and I were unsure whether we wanted to spend the money on a videographer for our wedding, but we are absolutely thrilled that we did. Dan and his Matter Video team (Johnny) captured our wedding in the most beautiful way possible. From the first look with my Dad, to our first kiss as husband and wife, to the details and dancing, Dan and his team captured the most intimate and precious moments of our wedding that we will now get to treasure forever. The day flies by (and our wedding was 10 hours long!) but a video created by Dan and team will ensure that those memories will always stay with you. It may be a big investment, but I promise you, being able to watch our video every year on our anniversary will be priceless. Oh! My wife Jessica and I were married at Nella Terra Cellars on September 15th, 2017, and one of the best decisions we made for our wedding was hiring Matter Video. From our first visit to Matter's website, we were blown away by both the high-quality visuals as well as the emotional narratives that were consistently present in all their videos (Jessica freely teared up watching several wedding videos of strangers she had never met). As soon as we got on the phone with Dan, we knew immediately he was a great fit for us. He instantly made us feel comfortable and we were laughing right away, and he provided clear and knowledgeable answers to all our questions. Dan was responsive, flexible, and supportive throughout our entire planning process. On the day of the wedding, working with Dan and his second shooter Tony was like hanging out with two of our closest friends. While the bridesmaids and Jess were getting ready in the morning, Dan and Tony were present but not intrusive, and they made everyone feel totally comfortable and relaxed (this was helped by the fact that Dan knows the lyrics to every pop song released between 2002-2009). Dan kept us calm and laughing throughout the day, giving subtle direction when it was necessary and blending into the background during more intimate moments. During the reception, there were several moments where Dan and Tony felt like they were part of the party, and they got some truly amazing shots by joining us out on the dance floor. The day after our wedding, we woke up at 8am to a text from Dan with our 30 second teaser. It was an absolutely unreal turnaround, and it was such an incredible surprise to be able to relive the day so soon after it was over. When we received our final video a few weeks later, we were beyond thrilled, and we've laughed and cried every single time we've watched it. Every shot is not only beautiful, but natural and authentic to us as a couple, and the video so perfectly captures the story of our day. As the groom, the bottom line was that I absolutely did NOT want to hire a videographer for our wedding. However, in hindsight, Matter Video was bar-none the best investment we made in our wedding. They made the wedding the best experience we could've imagined and stood head and shoulders above every other vendor. Period. Full stop. We had fantastic vendors at our wedding, but Dan and Tony added something unique and special. They made us feel at ease, comfortable, and confident in our day, which was outstandingly refreshing. Matter has a remarkable way of connecting with the bride, groom, and wedding party that makes them seem like they're part of the festivities, rather than just a camera following you everywhere you go. Do yourself the biggest favor you'll do for your wedding and call these guys! During the process of reading my review you may think to yourself, "Dang, they must've been friends or something because this review is badass!" Well, strangers of Yelp, you are incorrect! We were not associated with Dan prior to hiring him. Read on, won't you? Paul, my gorgeous literally steaming hot husband, had dabbled in video production himself while in high school and college, and so going into this "task" of finding ourselves the BEST OF THE BEST Artist of all things Video Filming and Production. I myself have been to a couple cousins' weddings where they also had a wedding film, and I knew I wanted a film of my own when that time arrived! In short, both Paul and myself wanted a highly experienced videographer, because we understood that if you expect high quality, then you had better expect to do all the research you can in locating the right guy or gal! We were referred to Dan and Matter Video by our wedding planner extraordinaire, Lindsay with Lindsay Lauren Events. She herself hired Dan to film her own wedding! To us that alone was a huge bonus for obvious reasons. We visited Matter Video's website many, many times, and I "followed" Matter Video on Instagram before we hired him. Turns out, Dan is exceptionally funny and light hearted- something of which was important to us, since we were to hang out together during the most important day of our lives and all! Matter Video is based out of Dublin, and we live in Brentwood. So, with his very busy schedule and our typically busy schedule, Dan and I had our first meeting on the phone, where he explained his process, and where I asked many questions (of course). Within minute 10 of our 30 minute conversation I knew I wanted to book him for our January 2018 wedding. Payments were split in two, a contract was signed, and we were booked! Three weeks before the wedding, we met with Dan in person at a local Starbucks, where he was quite the host! Paul has two boys from a previous marriage, I have one boy from a previous relationship, and we have one daughter together- our sleepy flower girl. During this meeting, we went through our plans with a fine toothed comb, and relayed to Dan the importance of including all four of our children into the video, since this day was just as much for them as it was for the two of us. Dan understood and had no problem at all incorporating all four kids into the film. Fast forward to our wedding day- January 14, '18. Dan and his associate videographer, Shawn, arrived right on time to our gorgeous AirBnb "getting ready" location (for both the Bride and Groom- a legit mansion) in Pleasanton. Our wedding venue was in San Ramon, and they had no problem driving from one location to the other. Dan and Shawn would either film together (but from different angles), or be separated depending on the type of filming that needed to be completed. They were both ever so patient with us and our kids. It was just so great. The wedding events went off without a hitch (videography wise), and that's really all that matters for this review! We received our complete wedding film exactly a month later (on Valentine's Day- awwww!), and I had to wait a full twelve hours until my husband got home from work before we would view it together. That was so difficult, let me tell ya! Upon viewing, both Paul and myself were full smiles and of course, tears from me. Our two song choices were PERFECT, and Dan did such a great job with his timing and production. I sent off our film link to our wedding party (while I was waiting for my husband to get home, lol!), and they absolutely loved it. Their responses ranged from, "I LOVE IT!"- to "IT'S LIKE A MOVIE!"- to "I WANT TO GO BACK!!". And yes, they used exclamation points and capital letters, to boot. About two weeks after Valentine's Day, we received our raw footage in the mail in the form of a USB drive. It was so great to have this!! Thank you Dan and Shawn for all of your hard work. I hope the sparklers weren't a literal pain for you. :) Everyone loved you: Our wedding party, our kids, our wedding guests, our other vendors (I adore your bromance with our coffee cart vendor, Story Coffee Co.!), and of course, Paul and myself.
