Rude, dishonest and horrible service. Long story short after my group waited an hour for their food, my friend and I had to wait an additional 25 minutes for our dishes. Our six friends were finished their meals before we got ours. The server didn't seem to care or notice that our food wasn't there and was rude when we asked. At the end of the meal they wanted to add a 25% tip for groups ( which is ridiculous). We complained to the server and asked to speak to the owner. Matteo was rude and didn't agree with the fact that our food was forgotten. The apology felt insincere and they did not offer any explanation as to why our food took so long. It was a horrible experience and we felt taken advantage of. We will never come here again and neither should you! read more

NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE! Had been there once before and it was ok, so we thought we try it again with a close friend, who was elderly. Made a reservation and showed up a few minutes before. A few other people waiting as we arrived, who asked me if we had a reservation, I said yes, they replied well then you sb seated quickly. BUT NO, after waiting 30 minutes, they get seated with no reservation. Another 10 minutes and the waitress who comes on like a "PITBULL" says here is your table, standing right next to us in the entrance, in full view of everyone coming in. A counter top height table with 5 different types of stools, not chairs. I said no we cannot sit there, our friend is 86 years old, has mobility issues and cannot risk sitting on a stool never mind this location right at the entrance with the cold coming in and everyone entering is standing right over the counter height table with 5 rickety stools. The PITBULL replies, well that's where you are sitting, we have no other tables available. I replied, well we have a reservation, have already been waiting 30 minutes while other people got seated who had NO RESERVATION, and you are clearing 2 regular tables right now and again we, our friend in particular, who is 86 cannot sit on these stools and right at this entrance where it is very cold. The PITBULL replies, well that's all I can give you as the other tables are for other reservations of groups of 4. I said WHAT???? That is ridiculous. You can't do that. That is also discrimination. You never said when we made the reservation, that we could only sit at this unsafe counter top table with stools here at the entrance and in fact you cannot discriminate against older people who cannot sit on stools in an unsafe space...I, my wife and dear friend could not believe her attitude and aggressiveness. Then all of the sudden the owner, I guess "MATTEO" himself shows up and continues where the PITBULL left of saying, we don't let groups of 3 sit at a table that holds 4, so this is where you have to sit. I said that is outrageous and may in fact not be legal as you are discriminating against a person of age and challenged mobility, never mind forcing us to sit where we are not comfortable when other tables are available. That went on for a few more minutes right in the entrance way and I finally said we are leaving and he followed us outside to continue his rant. I have never in 40+ years of global travel to some of the finest restaurants and some even not so fine , experienced such a discriminatory and low level of consideration, lack of decency, rudeness and service. Totally amateur and unprofessional and possibly worth a discrimination complaint to the authourities, I would strongly recommend avoiding this place as the food and service from all the reviews seems to be spotted with rudeness, many service and even food complaints anyways. We left, had a nice dinner, where there was no discrimination at a much better restaurant. Will never go there again. Stay clear! read more

Recommend by friends. I now know why. Outstanding quality of presentation and taste. Great selection. Very fresh pastas. The Lobster ravioli is the best I have ever enjoyed. Good selection of Italian and some Californian wines. Staff were all welcoming. A wonderful team of people. Although we didn't have the wood oven pizza, the aroma was to die for, and they looked fantastic (we were sitting next to wood oven). Looking forward to taking friends to experience. Word of advice......make reservations. Inside only seats 32-34, with patio sidewalk seating in summer weather. read more

Food was ok but the service was absolutely the worst I've ever had. I don't live in welland anymore and try to support restaurants when I visit but never will I ever go there or recommend it to anyone. I'm posting this one week after I was there and still livid about how we were treated. Some people definitely shouldn't serve food or work in the public. read more

We went to Matteo's last trip and it was great. I'm going tonight and I'm very excited to be back there. I love the wood fired pizza. Crispy crust and fresh ingredients make it delicious. We shared lobster ravioli and veal parmigiana. The raviolis were very filling and tasty. For dessert we treated a limoncello served in lemon halves and topped with sugar. You just have to go here!! The service is super friendly low key and the food is over the top fresh and fabulous! The mushroom caps stuffed with lobster and drizzled in a yummy cheese go perfectly with a glass of wine. Lobster ravioli is to die for with huge portions very filling. I thoroughly enjoyed my seafood linguine with generous portions of muscles shrimp scallops in the sauce was done perfectly with a bit of a bite! Unfortunately there was no room for dessert maybe next time... And there will be a next time for sure! read more

Ordered Lobster Ravioli, which tasted so bad that we no longer want to order Lobster Ravioli somewhere else. The lobster inside of vavioli is cold/frozen and tasted like fake lobster meat. Very disappointed. read more

Wonderful dinner last night with superb service. 5 of us, all having different entrees. The Carbonara was excellent, Pizza was huge, more than enough for one person. My friend who had the Veal Parm said it was the best he's ever had & my other friend who had the gnocchi loved it. They had live entertainment which made for a very enjoyable night. read more

Was in Welland for work and there isn't much choice for food out here. But man was I glad to find this place. Some of the best Italian food I've tried., had the veal parm with potatoe leek soup. This is probably the best Italian I've had since I was in Italy. I'm staying at a local Airbnb and stumbled upon this place and what a lucky night it was! Very slow service! Waited 30 minutes for a beer, 45 minutes for a salad and over 1 hr for a pizza. Very unorganized, not enough wait staff, pizza crust burnt, noisy patio. Whenever we travel we like to find restaurants that are not chain restaurants ,something the locals would eat. After looking at Yelp for quite some time we found Matteos, its about 25 minutes away from the crazy Niagra Falls touristy area. The drive almost made me think we were way off the beaten path. As soon as we walked in (family of 5) We were greated by Matteo himself(we didnt know it at the time) he explained that all his pasta is homemade and everything is made to order, I ordered the pescatore linguine. My husband the lobster ravioli which both were so incredibly good. I loved the atmosphere a little rustic and Matteo made me feel like I was in Italy at my uncle's house. My children ordered the linguine carbonara, and the atomic pizza. I must say it was the best Italian food we've ever had. Oh and I cant forget the incredible caprese salad with fresh pesto . We were meeting up with a friend and her child and decided to go back the very next night, and we ordered the exact same thing. If you want really good Italian food with a warm atmosphere, Matteo and Lisa will take care of you. After 2 nights with them it felt like family. So get out of the congested, overpriced, same old same old, and travel to Welland about 25 minutes and enjoy some wine and great food,and great people! The restaurant is tiny and I'd really suggest a reservation to make sure you get a seat though it would be worth the wait if you don't have a reservation. The pizza is amazing, crispy crust loaded with quality fresh ingredients. This is real pizza the way I remember it from Italy. The lasagna is an incredible melt in your mouth flavour sensation. It has an incredible number of layers that I could not begin to count. The pasta is light and fresh not overpowering the beautiful sauce and meat that load the dish. Appetizers were shrimp cocktail and mussels. The mussels were an incredibly large serving with a spiced creamy tomato sauce that begs to be dipped. The waitress suggested rightly that we might want a plate of bread with it. Absolutely. Shrimp were firm and fresh and a good size. A really authoritative dipping sauce that really complimented the shrimp. Desert are simply outstanding. I don't usually have desert but it would have been a mistake to skip this course at Matteo's The beer is ice cold in case anyone is wondering. I highly recommend you give Matteo's a try and if you are a local like I am I know where I will be going to get pizza from now on. PS; The owner came over to enquire about our meal and you could tell he is very proud of his place. We really didn't give him much of a chance to blow his own horn. This is a great little spot in a city that needs to elevate its food game. We have been multiple times and the food was very consistent and tasty. The caprese salad is delicious. It's properly salted and the cheese and balsamic are really tasty. I've had the chicken, the chicken parm and the pizza. All worth an eat. The service was great as well. The only drawback that people should realize is with the wood oven pizza cooking in a small area it can feel a bit smokey at times. Will be back again. read more

We were insulted 2 years ago on our Anniversary, when having made a reservation we were offered a table by the door which we rejected and left. The proprietor asked us to reconsider and give them an other chance. Again for our Anniversary (SILVER!) we were offered an other near the door table! A more suitable table was offered within the body of the establishment and we promptly got over the offense and dinner went reasonably well until I dared to order a THIRD DRINK to go with my coffee and desert; apparently 3 drinks is one to many according to our server and I was refused it on the basis of "It is the servers call." We promptly finished our coffee, ordered the bill, paid and left NO TIP. I felt I had been insulted and felt the sever should also be! Three drinks, once in 25 years could hardly make me at risk for drunkenness! I felt humiliated and insulted. I WILL NEVER GO BACK. We were offended two times to many! Outdoor seating is right up against the sidewalk with no privacy and a very exposed feeling, unpleasant to say the least. read more

Great find! Excellent food worthy of NY, LA or SF. A real gem in this small town. Pasta and pizza made on the spot, so frehlsh and tasty. From the moment we walked in the staff (owner and his wife) gave my girlfriend and I unwelcoming looks. The owner had come to take our orders and even though we were the only people in there, the owner started to boast about his "ristorante". I only asked a few simple questions and he seemed to get offended right away and belittle me. Despite my gut feeling we stayed and ate the food with a very awkward tension in the room. It was very uncomfortable but we both just laughed it off in disbelief. We had a calabrese salad to start which was meh but the owner boasted about the quality of cheese and vinaigrette. Then we both had pasta mains which also had been boasted as the finest pasta and blah blah. All these quality ingredients and the food was still bland and disappointing. Overall I would not recommend this place as the food does not live up to the narcissistic attitude portrayed as soon as you walk in. read more

My daughter suggested we try Matteo's after she read the strong online reviews, it was a great decision. All three meals were fabulous, ingredients were fresh, everything was flavourful, quantities were more than satisfying, had a nice wine selection, and the value for the dollar was excellent. The service was very good, it was a nice touch having the owner/chef come to our table to introduce himself and to check if we were enjoying the food. We normally don't order desert but given that everything was freshly made, we couldn't resist. The only complaint we have regarding Matteo's food is we all left a few pounds heavier! Our initial visit was so successful, we have become regulars and are yet to be disappointed with anything on the menu or the service. Matteo's is a fabulous addition to the Niagara Region and Welland! It is a tiny restaurant, and although you don't have to, I reconmend you make reservations.
