We had no idea what to expect. I called the night before to be sure we did not need to make a reservation and talked to Martha who was warm and welcoming - she said come on down! We arrived at 5PM and were greeted by a lovely young lady - 94 years old and teaching 2 exercise classes there a week. We gave her our money and got a ticket to turn into the cook. We went into the community room and there were 4 round and 1 large rectangular tables covered in multicolored table cloths and gold vases with brightly colored plastic flowers. The tables were set with cutlery and place mats and some "Golden Oldies" playing in the background. It was open seating and the 4 of us met quite the characters! Lily was celebrating her 81st birthday and was full of energy - joking with everyone and greeting you like an old friend. What struck me was everyone was laughing and enjoying some good, old-fashioned conversation. The meal was a thicker spaghetti noodle, a good side of salad and a slice of watermelon. In addition, strawberry shortcake - served by Lily - for dessert - a deal at 5 bucks! Wine was extra for a donation to the center - they were serving a red Yellowtail. The dinners are served the 3rd Thursday of every month - next up? Pizza night! You can count on us being there again to mingle with the generations and have a good laugh. Other services they offer: Senior Programs, Preschool and other Kid's Programs, Wellness Clinic, Yoga, Zumba and Tae Kwon Do classes. Something for everyone!

This was his first time being in a childcare setting and I wanted to make sure that not only did I trust that he would be cared for, but he would also be taught the fundamentals to give him a solid foundation in education. We were able to get it all at this school. My then 3 year old is now 5 and about to graduate from Kindergarten where he received one-on-one teaching and attention, which was tailored to where he is intellectually and emotionally. Now my 2 year old is there and making leaps and bounds developmentally with their curriculum and support. I will forever recommend this school, because they allow for the parents to also reinforce the strengths and improve on the student's weaknesses via homework, progress reports, and frequent updates.

After graduating and moving into a first grade class at a Chery Creek Elementary school, we were told she needed to repeat kindergarten. Being first time parents, we didn't know what skills she was supposed to learn. Considering our child spent three years at this "school", we expected she would be advanced, when in reality, she didn't even meet grade standard. We had to spend extra time and money for a year to bring our child up to grade level so the school wouldn't hold her back. She didn't even learn the sounds of the alphabet after three years here! Once we knew she was suppose to have this skill by first grade, we taught her the sounds of the alphabet in two weeks. Still, her reading was behind the other kids and it took a full year to catch her up. After attending a graduation ceremony, we felt it would be detrimental to her self esteem if we held her back. When I told the owner, Lori and Director, Shawn, they didn't believe me. They said kids don't always show their parents what they really know. I had to demand they test her and when the owner did, she apologized because we were right. She offered to have one of their teachers work with our child, but since they couldn't get the job done in three years, we weren't wasting any more time here. We are involved parents. We attended their 5 day meetings about how Montessori teaches your children. We attended our parent/teacher conferences and when I voiced some concern over our child not being able to write her name, the teacher told me to "keep working with her". I wonder if the parents who are happy with this place are teaching their kids at home and it's not the "school" doing the teaching. After doing much research, we learned that this "school' typically didn't have the staff required by law for the number of students per adult. In addition, they clearly don't monitor the kids skill level. The education varies from class to class. Some kids are sent home with books to read, others are not. We now realize some of the "work" they gave us which we were told our child did, the teacher actually did. In particular, there was a map of North America which obviously wasn't done by our child. I found the owner, Lori and the Director, Shawn, to be unprofessional and rude (especially the owner Lori). The employees seem unhappy if you get to know them. This is more of a daycare than a school. I do not recommend sending any child here if you want them to learn the skills needed to be successful in the local public schools. They gave a good sales pitch, but they don't live up to it. I noticed Yelp removed the other poor reviews. I wonder if they'll keep ours up, which is true and we have receipts proving our child attended this "school". The staff are all friendly and Ms. Idil who runs it is very knowledgeable and good with the kids. She even recognized that my son has a knack and love for math and offered to provide him some extra worksheets to keep his mind challenged during the summer months. Only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the camps are only from 9a-3p and I have to pay extra to be able to have them there from 8a-4p (and even that requires that my husband and I split drop-off and pick-up to accommodate our 8-hour work days). I appreciate that the camps are fun and educational, and I also appreciate that the attendees are diverse. The camps are pricier than others in the area, but they also have a small student-to-staff ratio of 6:1 that I prefer. (I find that larger ratios mean that well-intentioned adults don't always know what all the kids are saying/doing and my little ones pick up habits that I don't like). I also echo the challenge with the camp hours: 8am-4pm (with an extra daily cost for this extended care rather than 9am-3pm standard hours) is tricky for working parents. Even though the hours aren't ideal, we'll be sending our kids here again.

My son is advanced with math but has problems taking tests and both tutors have taken the time to troubleshoot and give us ideas on how to combat the problem. As licensed teachers they are both adept at dealing with different learning styles and truly understand how to teach and how to hold the attention of the kids they tutor. Kindergarten my son has had a math tutor every summer and Smart Cookie Tutoring is by far the best experience we've had and the only one we continued with throughout the school year. I recommend them to everyone who listens and truly appreciate all the help they have given us.
